  1. I know right, I think I still have a bunch of 2116's but even then timings are critical,.. I remember seeing the odd NOP instruction in the read/write function because of well spread of timings of the 2116's. :P :D
  2. I went from 32GB to 64GB about 12 months apart, I simply bought the same "Kit" of 4*8GB sticks all good.(x99 4 mem ch, 8 slots:) ) I suspect as you say if you were wanting to clock them at their max even to have all 4 slots in this case with the same spec RAM can be a problem it's recommended to only use 2 sticks for max memory clock speeds. I'm thinking even at 2666 (and that's the limit of the 9xxxCPU) it's going to pretty much go close to saturate the 41.5GB/S memory buss speed on the 9xxxx series CPU's. AMD CPU's (at the selected price point) have lower clocks then the intels, more threads equals more work done on multithreaded software unfortunately DCS is not multithreaded so I'm sticking to raw clock speed for this DCS build. Sure if it was to be a render machine Ryzen would be a choice. ;) @Svsmonkey Just for the purpose of a budget build for what ever reason initially even with a HDD and pagefile enabled you would still have a decent VR machine that you can add an SSD to later. I don't know why you get page file access and more to it why this might cause issues. You should be able to turn it off at 32GB of RAM! If your getting the odd drop frame (stutter) or FPS drops your likely hitting 100% GPU usage or saturating the the CPU core doing most of the work. For me I just back settings off to give the GPU some head room and it's fine. Don't fret if your not hammering the GPU/CPU to within a percent of 100% that's a nonsense and gives no capacity to process additional actions within the game or the PC for that matter. BM and I have slightly different philosophies here. ;) As a side note I think the guys at ED have been doing some tweaking to the DCS engine over the last few updates, I don't know for sure but there seems to be some slight lags introduced recently in SP but overall DCS is feeling more responsive and looking better in Rift VR.
  3. Yeah I think bang per buck rtx 2070 (maybe wait for 2070Ti??) :D I'm considering 9600K should clock to 5.1ish+ GHz 32GB 2666 15CL or better ?? 2*16 or 4*8 meh!:) rtx 2070 SSD/HDD not super important
  4. Yep i'd go with just 16GB for now easier to add more RAM later than upgrade parts like CPU or GPU, for now look at,.. The mobo supports 4 slots upto 2666Ghz? CPU, i5's are fine for DCS but higher clock speeds are better for DCS, is there much difference in price for the 9600K 4.6GHz out of the box and clockable. (about $40AUD here) <edit> You would also be up for a cooler "solution" for the CPU Yes an SSD over a spinning HDD but thats a moderate upgrade latter on if necessary. If you did start with an HDD adding another 16GB of RAM (Total of 32GB) latter will pretty much allow all DCS stuff to load into RAM albeit a bit slower to load. My experience is that there is not a lot of HDD/SSD access once the game is loaded into memory. 1070(Ti) minimum even if you have to wait a week or three to get it, a lot cheaper then grabbing a 1060 now and find you need to upgrade later to a 1070(Ti) FWIW
  5. Wowa! I find all rotaries very relaxing to fly. I'm doing it all wrong then?.. :P :D
  6. Think of the endless debates over the dragon FM,.. :P Not to mention the arguments about the performance of catapults range and guidance systems. :D
  7. Cool so I just purchase a second serial number under my account, I'm fine with that but can see managing serial numbers could quickly become a hassle with the current DRM scheme. Cheers.
  8. Actually I've noticed improvements in DCS/Rift VR over the last 3 updates especially in close up detail. I'm not seeing improvements in FPS still seem 45FPS with ASW ATM. However seems visuals are getting better and even DCS seems more responsive with some of the more recent updates. I did the x.24436 update last night and flew in NTTR just a free flight and sampled the GPU using task manager and it seems to have reduced the average GPU usage for what seems to be 2.3.x eye candy. Although I think I am now seeing lag like behavior on SP, could be multiple drop frames as it seems to coincide with hitting 100% GPU usage. Oddly there doesn't seem to be information from ED in the update notes,
  9. Yes and even on the ED Huey page they keep teasing us,... Mi-24 is also coming too. :D
  10. Whilst the Mi-8 has more capability MTOW etc the Huey is also a capable gun ship but for slightly different rolls. You really can't go wrong with either Mi-8 or Huey. You do realise if they are both 50% off then buying both will only cost the price of one,.. sort of. :music_whistling: Yeah I thought you already had the Gazelle I see it's only slightly discounted.
  11. It's more a second rig to run DCS idea currently, I'm just not sure how to handle the software licensing for say 2 of the same aircraft.
  12. Okay I'm looking at setting up a second DCS PC (Maybe a server latter on) So do I simply use my account buy the modules a second time or is it best to setup a second account for licensing. I'd like to maybe get some modules in the current sale for the second PC.
  13. You have Rift spares on hand like cable, face interface just waiting incase they are needed,.. And you rationalise spending a couple of grand on a graphics card maybe a new PC just for maybe a few % more performance :D :music_whistling:
  14. I approach in VR, that is tune settings to limit the average GPU use to around 70~80% and CPU average use to around 80~90% in a quest to maintain 45 FPS. (90FPS in game went out the window with 2.5 currently) With settings adjusted for the above average usage there is headroom in the processing capabilities of my system for when in game events occur and I hardly ever seem to get frame drops (map dependent) I find when GPU usage hits 100% you get frames dropped or AKA stutters every time as well artefact levels increase. Now the problem is the maps (and modules to an extent) utilise different amounts of GPU/CPU usage. General experience keeping settings the same Rift VR casual flying (although I don't think I actually fly casually :P) free flight. The NTTR map is currently the most efficient map in terms of required GPU and CPU usage and in VR it shows as buttery smooth 45FPS with hardly any ASW artefacting usually only in downtown Las Vegas. Caucasus map utilises more GPU/CPU and I do get the occasional stutter and somewhat more ASW artefacts. It's almost a tie for Normandy and PG maps but the GPU sits around 90 something % and hits 100% often and I get frequent stuttering (drop frames) of course in most cases dropping MSAA from 4 to 2 or more likely 0 will improve performance at the expense of visual quality. I just find if I push the system to try and maintain high CPU/GPU usage cus the numbers look good right, I get more drop frames and poorer visual quality than if I bring setting back to allow some processing headroom. System 5930 i7 @4.7GHZ 64GB DDR4 @2.4Ghz (55MB/s) 1080Ti @1.9Ghz Typical NTTR 15~18% CPU usage 70 to 80% GPU usage most settings on high or max PD 1.2 MSAA 4 YMMV
  15. ^ Exactly, if you do turn of the page file off do try rebooting the computer a couple of times making sure there are no apps being "restarted automatically" between boots. Then try DCS/VR after a clean boot. For me basic free flight mission uses maybe 6 to 8 GB RAM/ 6GBVRAM and MP 11 + GB of RAM and 11ish GB of VRAM. It's very hard to get DCS to use more RAM with the new memory model used I remember before the memory management was implemented it was common to see 18~20+GB of RAM used. Keep in mind the aim (well for me) is to ensure not only DCS has enough RAM but also the OS and what ever other apps you may have running has enough system RAM to work without needing to page stuff away and worse not have to swap stuff (um data) between page file and RAM. @Headwarp. did you get a chance to verify your memory speed? And if so are you nearly saturating the i/o buss?
  16. Paid as soon as I could, fly's great for a plane, :D  ;)
  17. I did try this but it didn't do anything for Rift so back to 4* MSAA.
  18. Oh and glad the GPU was already sorted I may have glazed over that bit. :music_whistling: I see the 8700K has a max memory bandwidth, 41.6 GB/s it would be interesting to see what your memory bandwidth is before and after 16/32GB. If you get stuck turning off virtual memory just reboot windows a couple of times let it sort out what memory strategy it's going to use. Can you turn off that annoying 'start all the apps when it restarts" thing?
  19. Shadows can be a problem maybe lower the settings to flat only and terrain object shadows to flat and see if that helps.
  20. @Headwrap has the RAM arrived yet?
  21. I just copied the logbook.lua file into C:\Users\SavedGames\DCSopenAlpha\MissionEditor What about in the dropdown box, is your log book available to change to?
  22. Actually initially yes but after about 30 minutes or so flying NTTR and Caucasus maps DCS is looking and preforming pretty good. Actually for me DCS in Rift VR got better 2 updates ago, I don't know what or why it just looks and feels better to fly in. Have you deleted the FXO and metashaders directories, that sometimes can help.
  23. I think you might find a set of pedals and sure a good stick will make all the difference for DCS just like actual aircraft. I can't really comment on the x56 as I moved from the 3D pro to home built cyclic, collective and soon hopefully I will have the prototype for my home built torque pedals.
  24. Have a look at C:\users\yourusername\saved games\dcsworldopenbeta\logs there will be a lot file from the last time you ran DCS that is to say DCS will overwrite the log file when it starts so you need to quite out of DCS after you experience an issue rename the file or move it. My system can take a while to get into the aircraft and the MP thing sounds like your ping time is too long maybe.
  25. If your using the twist trip to act as pedal input keeping the ball in the instrument can be difficult task, let alone keeping it centred. I started with a 3d pro trying to fly Huey and the best thing I did to help my flying was to get a set of pedals. As for.a mode to keep it centred, nope, that's the pilots job. :D
