uncontrollable Yaw / Rudder steering !!! Help please
Magic Zach replied to subseauk's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
To RandomTOTEN's post, it sounds like normal behavior for a Spitfire being taxied by someone inexperienced. Use the wheel brake in tandem with rudder inputs. And even then you can lose control if the plane starts turning too sharply and fast. And the Spitfire doesn't have a tailwheel lock like all the other aircraft in DCS (aside for I16), so kicking the rudder left doesn't result in immediate turning. If you're fast taxiing the Spitfire however, the wind speed and prop wash will result in smooth turning with hard rudder kicks. And from a dead stop, throttling up significantly but quickly can help, due to prop wash on the tail. Sent from my SM-A715F using Tapatalk -

Figure 4 is twisted I will challenge the lethality claim though. To the pilot? No. Plane? Maybe. Probable is right, it could have taken the plane out in one go, but with that damage the plane would likely be able to struggle back to base and the pilot would bail. I see a bit of that term up to individual interpretation, as it could be used to say the damage is so severe that you're better off jumping, or won't go far on it to make it 60 miles back over friendly lines, or the plane wouldn't be maneuverable any more without causing further damage...thus a sitting duck. Ingame, that would take a pilot home, if he hasn't died. The worst part of that is the loss of aileron control, which if hit when the plane is level, wouldn't be an issue as rudder control can step in for the loss of aileron control. You'll have to side slip a lot though to make up for the drag and loss of lift. The worst thing I see there other than the loss of aileron control is the frag entering the cockpit. In the new DM that could result in pilot death or injury. And from pictures I've seen Nine post, a close impact like that could result in a concussion to the pilot as well. I think that when they say "lethal" they might be a bit optimistic. The environment of real pilots are a lot different from that of someone safe and clear-headed behind a screen. Someone irl who might lose aileron control might go "screw this" and jump, while us simmers without our life on the line would calmly react to keep our plane in the air. Gonna agree there, looks like it came in from the right, not the left where the camera is. Which makes sense from a filming perspective, you get a better view of the damage at a perpendicular angle to the shot. Sent from my SM-A715F using Tapatalk

The damage to the Spitfire there, the only one I can see is Fig. 1 and maybe Fig. 5 if that's a wing there..not completely sure what I'm looking at there, thought a wing but the leading edge looks off in a not-damage way. For Fig1, if the Spit pilot does nothing and pulls the least amount of G he can and doesn't slow down to increase AoA, that looks like it'd take him home for a fast belly landing. So still, for an extremity to be severed completely won't happen often if a 30mm is guesstimatedly plinked at a Spitfire. Tail hits would probably do it. But a wing, it doesn't look so. Fig.4 would be the case where the wing would be torn off, by the looks of it, Fig.6 looks like a loss by the sheer amount of lift lost and drag gained. Just nitpicking the photos there. Tl;dr a wing to be blown off ala 190's ammo storage style shouldn't happen in the new DM very often with the 30mm. That'd have to be really lucky (or unlucky for the Spit), or be something like a HUGE deflection shot like 60 or 70deg. However normally, from a 6 shot, the structure will be either severely weakened to the point that the pilot will immediately leave the fight and then bail nearby a friendly field Or the aerodynamic penalty is so great that the aircraft may lose control, if barely manage to hang on, and that's IF the control connections are still there. This is just what I'm gathering from your pics Sent from my SM-A715F using Tapatalk

The latter. I had cracked open the roughmets for both skins and there was a lot more green on these skins than on the default (which looks perfect) Sent from my SM-A715F using Tapatalk

I hope we get some CloD-level damage graphics so we can see the spars and longerons beneath the skin when it's blown away, that'd be cool. Could have the internal parts 3D modeled and textured, but have it blocked out similar to how the current DM is, to que different sections of the internal model. When skin is blown away, the internal model for that section called up. This way it'll optimize performance a bit, so the computer won't always render the normal plane AND the internal model that you won't see anyways. Cool idea anyways Sent from my SM-A715F using Tapatalk

You literally just regurgitated what I already said

a 30mm shot isn't a guaranteed instant kill to a fighter. Reading expectations that some folks have for the 30mm and I'm laughing. It is deadly, yes. It can cripple your plane, yes. It will likely require you to immediately RTB if you can, yes. It can instant kill you, yes. Is it a guaranteed one shot kill, no.

It's fine. Glad to hear it! Imo, both DCS and GB complement each other really well. DCS has the simulator element that is currently unbeatable, and when you start working together with others using Simple Radio Standalone (program that allows you to use your aircrafts radio equipment as comms, and will work correctly according to that piece of equipment your plane has), DCS can really start to feel amazing. IL-2 might not have that simulation, but it has that cohesiveness of the planesets, the MP base, and the ease of playstyle that make it great for quick and easy action that would take more effort in DCS. Imo, I like both games right where they are now, because of how well they fill in the gaps where the other lacks. Though, I would like DCS to get a more cohesive map/planeset. Would be awesome to have a Rheinland map going all the way to Berlin, and the Channel map be more oriented for a BoB planeset, which Nick G really wants to see, and me as well.

Let's see YOUR description.lua. You know these are default skins right? Or open your skins in your modelviewer and see them yourself. Or look at screenshots literally anyone else has taken of either of these skins. I don't need to post my description.lua, because this is an issue everyone has. And if you think you dont, post a screenshot of one of these skins. Also I'm away from my PC until the 20th so description.lua is difficult for me to get a hold of right now.

For the 53rd and Mayo skins, the roughmet gives the planes the appearance that isn't metallic as seen in photo references. DCS: References of the 53rd FS of the 36th FG: The aircraft painted for the 36th FG had some shine to them, enough that I'd call it baremetal, as the default USAF Standard skin our P-47 is. The roughmet is too rough, and the blue channel is nearly eliminated on the main body of the aircraft where it'd be ideal. The USAF Standard skin is a good model for how the white body of the 53rd and Mayo skins should appear as

Hi Nick! I heard that there was some missing documentation for the P-47D, and that Eagle Dynamics had to resort to (I'm assuming virtual) wind tunnel testing. What information and behaviors were taken from that wind tunnel testing and applied to our P-47D? Are there any peculiarities that stuck out, or did anything seem to not correlate entirely with documentation from the period or other reports? Thanks o7

To get the closest results, don't mess with the time settings (pause, speed up, slow down) at all

Double digits doesnt sound right, agreed there. However, don't use any experience from when you've also used MGs in tandem with the cannon, you could mistake those impact poofs for those. Also there is a DM upgrade on the way down the road, so wait for that time come in before doing anything further probably. Also dont expect a 3cm to always do damage like this. Sometimes they just punched through without making a hole as big as in your pictures. For it to consistently make damage such as that wouldn't be accurate. Also(2), keep in mind that ammo wasn't perfect. Sometimes it just doesnt work correctly

Agreed, the art quality on the external is pretty poor at today's standards now
