  1. Out of curiosity, when did those people fly the Viper? Because (and that's the whole point I've been trying to make) there's a major difference between fairly large scale affairs like Desert Storm or a potential Cold War gone hot, and a modern-ish (as in, Allied Force and afterwards) CAS type operation where limiting collateral damage is almost the main goal.
  2. I was wondering where the thread went! This would definitely fit DCS pretty well, there are plenty of assets for it already in the game or on the way as mentioned in the OP.
  3. From the report on Air Power in Desert Storm (Volume 4). Again, obviously in the modern day with perfect navigation, perfect intel, and GPS guidance, a mediocre a2g radar is not very useful. That doesn't mean it never was - as Machalot pointed out, the Viggen (and F-104G/S, and A-6, and F-111, to name a few) literally had bomb radar delivery modes before DBS/EXP was even a thing. Was it accurate? Not really. Was it better than nothing? Yep.
  4. The important thing here is not whether or how much was diverted though, but rather the community's perception that it was. Especially given past experiences (e.g. ED claiming that the Viper and Hornet teams would always be entirely independent, and that development of one would not hinder the other) I don't think there is any way for that perception to go away.
  5. Yea it's more or less meant to be a Block 1 retrofitted with some Block 2 stuff (mostly the AAR probe as far as I know). The radar is called KJL-7, and I don't know what the RWR is (not that it makes a particularly big difference in DCS 4th gen aircraft).
  6. See the image attached. However, the variant the Viggen carries is an optical/TV guided variant so it shouldn't be effective at night.
  7. Better copy/paste tools (including for scripts) with the ability to have more than one mission at the same time would be nice. As is, porting stuff from one mission to another is really annoying.
  8. If it's good enough to spot airport runways or hangars, or ports, then it's definitely relevant (again, assuming no fancy GPS guided standoff stuff). Not all missions are about plinking tanks.
  9. As reliable as any claims during the Iran/Iraq war. Keep in mind that this wasn't your air-quaky 1v1 at 40nm flying at each other situation. The Iraqis used multiple flights, GCI, the decent range of the R530F and the better EWR equipment of the Mirage to get their jets into a good spot to ambush the Tomcats.
  10. More importantly, the fact that it's not used now with GPS navigation and precision guided weapons using during uncontested CAS missions does not mean it was always useless.
  11. Disappointing but not unexpected. Hopefully the delay really ends up being only a couple of weeks, rather than a month or more.
  12. Multiple people in the community want different assets, just have a look at the Wishlist section. There are demands for Korea era stuff, Vietnam, Desert Storm, modern stuff...it all adds up. No, I'm saying that any one consistent group of assets from a well defined era is near infeasible because that still involves a massive amount of money. It's not coincidence that the only such asset pack we have is highly controversial because it's not free. Sure, let's not double the price for ships then (although I suspect it's still much more expensive to do a ship than it is to update the model of a truck, which is what cost 50k). We're still looking at millions. And my point is that monetary concerns are just as big of a deal as performance concerns, and that all of these hyper specific wishlist threads ignore that. Multiply "just a few assets from this era/setting" by the number of theaters/eras that people want more assets in, and you're either a) left with an immense amounts of assets and money required, b) if you select fewer assets for the sake of not bankrupting ED, you're left with....their current pace of adding assets or c) you focus everything you have on one era that some people like and piss off a bunch of the community because you're ignoring this other cool era.
  13. Uh, interesting since the video above clearly shows different behaviour. Could this be due different variants of the APG-68?
  14. This is the part that nobody seems to be understanding. There was an interview a while ago with Nick Grey, where he stated that the cost of an AI asset (so 3d model, texturing, and simple coding) was like ~50k for each iirc - and that was for trucks. Let's make that 100k for things with more complex systems like ships, and 150k for aircraft. People are asking for dozens and dozens of these things, so that adds up to several million dollars worth of cost (and that's without factoring in the time it would take). It is -not- feasible to do them all, not even remotely close. Obsessing over historical accuracy is like obsessing over the fact that every EM sensor in DCS doesn't calculate ray tracing and radiative transfer through the atmosphere. There simply comes a point where you need some stand-in, whether that be in the physics or assets implemented.
  15. Per title, in Missions 11, 13, 14, and possibly 15 (I haven't completed 14 yet) the player's aircraft still carries the Litening instead of the ATFLIR.
  16. Tell that to F-111 crews it's only relaxed because that's how people build missions in DCS
  17. Meh, in most scenarios when friendlies are close you would have a FAC or JTAC talking you on a target and/or marking their position and/or pointing out the target with a laser pointer and/or only clearing you to attack when you can describe the exact target they want you to attack (see e.g. all the CAS you do in Raven One, or in Watching the Devildogs). Miss-identifying targets in that situation is highly unlikely at best.
  18. Not really, the phrasing "with the F-111B eliminated" just means that - the F-111B was gone and something had to become the next fleet defender, not that it had competed against the Tomcat at any point.
  19. Nice! Sounds like I'm going to need a lot of extra commands to my Hotas, but should be pretty intuitive otherwise.
  20. Yea a better example would be either the Viggen (which always worked pretty well), or the community A-4 (which is fine but required major updates recently to bring it up to par). The issue with that is that none of those radars have EXP modes (which is the whole selling point of the SE's radar for a2g), and even Deka haven't implemented that yet. But more importantly, we all complained, very loudly at that, that module developers and RB especially should stop releasing EA modules with half baked features that remain a mess for years, and that then get neglected when the next new module comes up. RB got that feedback and basically stopped developing any other module until their current ones were considered complete - which, again, we all commended. Of course that's going to delay a massive, flagship-level product for years, especially with RB's habit of teasing things extremely early on in development.
  21. And yet, ED is not adding "what if" weapons to their Viper like LJDAM, APKWS or SDB, because they were not active on the aircraft they want to simulate. In the same way, HB won't add AMRAAM or HARMs to the F14 because want to simulate a jet from the active fleet, and those aircraft never went anywhere near that capability. That ME feature is mostly meant for somewhat unit-specific/unclear situations like carrying 4 HARMs or tripe Maverick racks. It's not really there to allow users to turn modules into what is effectively a prototype.
  22. I just flew it, no problems for me. First JSOW was called "no joy", the rest hit perfectly well. The only minor issue is that the Harriers messaged that they were rolling in with GBUs while my wingman was doing the 4th attack run. On a practical note, I'm impressed that you managed to make a JSOW mission this fun! Flying at night really adds a lot.
  23. Iirc the default loadout for a lot of the Iran-Iraq war was 4 Phoenixes, full gun, no other missiles, and plenty of optimism, so this would be a great option.
  24. edit: redacted, not worth it.
