A big jet screamed by really close taking off to my innocent I-16 parked on rwy side and shook it so hard it broke the gear and I had to repair. Accurate? No idea. Memorable? Yes.

Everybody talks about modules (aka planes). I think SDK for terrain and terrain objects is far more fruitful. Making planes and aircraft systems is really hard and I wouldn't expect many, if any, user made planes of high quality. Below seems self evident: Top of my wish list is large terrains. I do believe DCS miss out on a significant customer base of hard core simmers by not having big terrains to navigate given that DCS offers the best quality flight model and planes systems simulation on the market. I did note one 3rd party saying they want to make civilian planes and see no reason DCS couldn't be a civilian sim as well. Customer made terrains wouldn't be great, at least at first, but something is better than nothing. Here is where the user base could be harnessed. We can't mention other flight sims, so I'll only say I know of other sims with tons and tons of user made terrains. I also remember the vitality and enthusiasm that happened there.

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
To the point of the thread. 1) Spitfire sometimes not startable after repair is a bug. I can't see how it isn't. 2) Ground power not doing anything is also bug. I can't see how it isn't. It looks to me like 1) is caused by a combination of drained battery and 2)- 53 replies

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
There is no central battery switch, not in cockpit. Or so I've been told in these forums (it drove me crazy looking for the battery switch so I asked). Everything must be turned off one by one: -Throttle switch (gear + fuel pressure light) -fuel pump, -radiator flap auto -pitot heater -radio -wind screen de-icer -navigation lights -gunsight forgetting something maybe- 53 replies

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery

Agreed. Yes, it drops after a couple of minutes. I did say "immediate after engine off".- 53 replies

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
Looking close at voltmeter it's 14.6-14.7 just spawned and drops to 14.5V immediate after engine off (I lazily rounded up to 15 without looking closely). 14.7V fits well I think if it's a Lead-Acid battery because of 6 x 2.45 = 14.7 V (6 cells for 12V battery) I assume Spitfire has a Lead-Acid battery (invented 1859) because researching the F-86 I found it has a lead-acid and would older Spitfire have something fancier not yet invented? NiMH invented 1967. Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
Both P-51 and Spitfire dims green gear lights when starter is pushed (with or without ground power connected). In a nice touch the P-51 lights dims less if ground power is connected. In the video I made (post #2) one can see how the (drained battery) P-51 green gear light comes back the moment ground power is connected. The (drained battery) Spitfire gear light does not come back with ground power. In the Spitfire, the voltmeter on the panel dips when starter is pushed. What exactly does the voltmeter show? I think it shows DC battery voltage because: a) it dips when starter is pushed b) it shows 15V with a fresh battery and newly turned off engine c) it dips over time down to 12V but it's still startable d) after a deliberate battery draining it's down to around 5V- 53 replies

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
Could be, doesn't quite make sense to me though. Year ago I dug into the F-86 electrical system. External power connects to battery through a cascade of relays at the ideal charging voltage. Anyway, if Spitfire is dependent on a working charged battery then it is an another kind of bug. "Repair" doesn't guarantee a good charged battery and therefore sometimes it can't be started. F-86 external power and battery. Note leads marked [1] non-existent on 35 (our) version.- 53 replies

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
? I can imagine clever circuitry for many reasons but Ground Power is for engine start and this doesn't work, so therefore I call it a bug. It doesn't seem to do anything. It doesn't provide power to the starter (that's the point of ground power). It doesn't provide power to the instrument lamps. Running for 30 mins is a lesser bug.- 53 replies

Thanks. Ground Power not providing *any power* anywhere *is* a bug. Fishing for BIGNEWY to say REPORTED.- 53 replies

Connecting Ground Power will not turn over engine with drained battery
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Bugs and Problems
Can someone confirm this? It's very easy. Takes 30 min to drain battery. Make a starter HOTAS binding so you don't have to hold the key down. Then connect ground Power and note that Spitfire does not get any power anywhere, not starter, not instrument lights.- 53 replies

Exactly same thing happens with A-10A. Also all (4) elevators. Touch red/yellow line <kaboom>. Any wheel, not just nose wheel (assuming Su-33 the same). 20 sec video. Right aft elevator and left aft elevator (again, it's all elevators & all wheels touch red/yellow line = <kaboom>) (can upload tracks)

If bug, still behaves just like (bolded) above (Anno Deum 2013). I mapped "Flaps Up" and "Flaps Landing Position" as up/down. Two taps "Flaps Up" ensures they're fully up and two taps "Flaps Landing Position" ensures they're fully down. I can select half flaps with a single tap. Flaps logic doesn't make sense, but this way I know what is happening and can control it.

I takeoff and land Stennis all the time. Because it's fun. Right now I wanted to make a short track (not having to land) for the explode-on-elevator-bug or slide-on-deck-bug.

Lots of talk about weight. I went into the sea a couple of times and didn't get it until ... You must always wait for the engine to spin up fully before releasing brakes: -LShift W -full throttle -wait -release LShift W -LShift E

Off the reservation I know, but can it? Maybe all military unite when the aliens attack. Searched forums for answer.

It slides towards the stern when engine is running irregardless of how it's parked. With engine off it doesn't slide. So to park Su-33 on Stennis: Shut off engine (and don't park on elevators because <kaboom>).

It would be nice if Jester didn't scream like a girl and ejected when doing rhubarbs ... Only did Tomcat on the weekend promotion. And this did happen.

Not just missiles. Are there/ should there be proximity fuze AAA in DCS?

Are there any user made terrains?
-0303- replied to -0303-'s topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Indeed, that thought has occurred to me. Filling out Normandy to get a BoB terrain specifically. But now were getting an actual cliffs of Dover terrain. But a real large terrain is what I asked for. I do think hard core simmers would flock if DCS had large terrains. -
I have so far never seen a user made terrain. User made planes exist so why not terrains? Is there a prohibition on those? In general I believe DCS is the best simulator in terms of the actual flight simulation and aircraft systems simulation and I think DCS is missing out on a significant customer base by not having large terrains. Obviously any large terrain must be generated from existing databases. Hand made terrains is out of the question. But DCS could harness it's user base to fill out details by giving out specs or even selling a developer kit.
