Would I like the F14 if I don't like the F18
Willie Nelson replied to Gunfreak's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I love the Hornet perhaps exactly for the reasons that you don’t. It’s complex and not necessarily intuitive like the Viper. It’s difficult to learn and has many traps. I understand that makes it harder but also more rewarding when you get a handle on it. Having said that, this is also the reason I’m not all that excited by the prospect of biting off a new aircraft like the tomcat. People I know who are flying it though speak very highly of it, I’m sure you’ll love it. -
AMD RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition vs. RTX 3090?
Willie Nelson replied to GPatricks's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
When you say you’re getting 90fps, is that with motion smoothing off? If so do you still see ghosting on close up A-A engagements. I’m wondering what sort of improvements I might be able to get when I eventually upgrade my i7700k @4.8 and 2080ti because as things stand right now in DCS, things are pretty good even generally in MP. Other sims, completely different story but I’m starting to realise how much I sometimes take DCS VR performance, at least on my Reverb G1, for granted. I’d be interested in your thoughts. -
UH60 Blackhawk Modern Day Utility Helicopter
Willie Nelson replied to Kev2go's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Yep, forget fly by wire, that is one of the great things about the Huey, you let go of the stick and it’s all over! -
Yep, I get it and I have even less idea than the next guy about when it may land or whether or not it will even be any good but it would seem to be a potential waste of money to go and spend several thousand dollars on a new rig only to find that the old one would have sufficed and you could have spent it on something that was a real improvement elsewhere such as the HP Reverb Gen 3

Any further word on this. I am getting flickering in my right eye only while in various SP missions both today and yesterday. Didn't seem to happen in MP though yet, although that of course could be a coincidence.

Petition to get ED to make the F/A-18D
Willie Nelson replied to Hammer1-1's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Wow, so if you got the Super Hornet for some eye candy, you couldn’t fly the legacy Hornet? That sounds like a fairly counterproductive exercise. -

Interesting, what was the Super Bug Fiasco, was that something to do with another platform? -

Is is possible for someone to do a mod that adds a back seat to the current C model or is that facility not available with the Hornet. Personally, I’d love to see the D model because 1) it would be great to take someone for a ride and speed up the learning process substantially. And 2) Because the D model looks awesome! -
ED, Lean back a moment and be proud of yourself
Willie Nelson replied to psycho158's topic in DCS 2.9
Yep, VR got me over the line into DCS, now that I’m in. I am staggered how good this platform is. ED rocks! -
The best value for money would be to sit tight and wait for the Vulkan API. Perhaps it’s not what it’s cracked up to be. I suspect at first pass it wont however, ED has been pretty good at finding tweaks in various elements of their platform that make small gains over time. While it’s a different API, another well known civilian sim was recently upgraded to DX12. It was previously unplayable and now, I get a smooth 45FPS which as I understand it translates to 90 FPS when motion smoothing is on. Cost of new equipment $0.
-
As a side note, keep in mind a shift to the Vulkan API which is at least slated for Q3 this year may change things quite a bit. Just a thought.

I completely agree about the simple mouse, give it a go first and then see if you want to try something else but this shouldn’t be the showstopper.
-
I really look forward to this being viable. I think it really will be the way of the future. I appreciate that others are getting in early to help in development but I’ll hold off for a while.

leapMotion implementation possibility
Willie Nelson replied to Kariyann71's topic in Virtual Reality
Pretty happy to see that Leapmotion is being integrated into DCS, definitely sounds like the way forward. -
Not at all. I haven't looked at all that for some time and I've basically spent the last 24 hours going over the lot. XMP enabled used to cause a CTD so I didn't worry about it. Tried it again and it's all good now. As for the rest, I went through and made sure everything was overclocked correctly and background processes were all off where possible and I thought I might have noticed an improvement but benchmarking in various modes funnily enough showed a tiny decrease in performance on every aspect. It looks like it is indeed a better CPU that I will be looking for eventually. Having said that, DCS is still pretty good on my rig even in MP, so I shouldn't complain. Thanks.

Recommended Motion Simulator?
Willie Nelson replied to MADLOU1's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yep, pretty good for cars and civilian aircraft because of the normal G range. Looks great for that in fact. -
Recommended Motion Simulator?
Willie Nelson replied to MADLOU1's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I’m not kidding when I say: don’t waste your money. There is a reason the military stopped using full motion simulators for combat aircraft years ago. They simply cannot replicate a greater range than about 0.5 to +2.0 G. And even that can only be sustained for very short periods of time. Civilian aircraft, when operated in accordance with the AFM can stay within that range but even then replicating the correct centre of gravity is also very difficult simply due to the laws of physics and the hydraulic systems that you require. if you want some sort of rumble seat perhaps, that’s a different proposition but the cost of a full flight simulator that accurately replicates G forces is often more than the cost of a line aircraft. -
I’d be interested in this thread to find out if my i7700k (currently overclocked using the BIOS automatic OC system up to 4.8GHz) would be substantially improved by moving to something like an 11900k especially in the context of the upcoming Vulkan API. I guess I’m asking, has anyone that is also using VR who might have made that jump been able to notice a significant performance with something like my 2080ti? To be clear, I think DCS VR performance is actually awesome on something like a Reverb but I recognise it struggles somewhat in multiplayer.

cannot reproduce and missing track file AGM 65 auto handoff?
Willie Nelson replied to Willie Nelson's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
That’s good info, exactly the sort of information I haven’t been able to find by simply looking through the manuals. Thanks. Yes, I have had the TMS down go to CZ all too often now, I’m not sure if it’s consistent or if there’s something I’m missing in the heat of battle but I have to completely bug out go away and reaquire at a distance. I’m certainly looking forward to ED bringing in DTOS for visual acquisition, but that’s another story. -

Willie Nelson replied to Willie Nelson's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Ok, thanks for that, would you mind giving me tips on what you do to boresight that might be different to me, keeping in mind that with the D ang G Mavs, I have not problem getting a lock on stationary targets when I boresight on the ground to an object that is viewable in the HUD and at least 200 metres away with a reasonable contrast. -
cannot reproduce and missing track file AGM 65 auto handoff?
Willie Nelson replied to Willie Nelson's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Yeah, that was my impression. I’m not really listing this as a bug, maybe that’s how the real thing works, much to my chagrin, I’ve never flown a real Viper. Glad I’m not the only one having issues in that respect. Thanks. -
Do most of those familiar with AGM deployment on to moving targets tend to rely upon the auto handoff on the D and G models. I've been practising its use lately and I find that it's often easier to re-designate myself directly through the AGM seeker head as the TGP handoff does not see all that reliable. I have found that It does work from time to time but not always. And yes, I am correctly bore sighted.

Could be good. I might take you up on that sometime. I really love the new instrument lighting, it was a bit naff before. Looks awesome now. I love steam gauges, I’m sick to death of glass cockpits. Too uninteresting.

I just jumped in the Huey, revised the cold start procedure and setup up a night time ILS into Damascus runway 23R ILS in the soup. HOLY $#!+ this chopper is soooo good, especially in VR. I am a fixed wing pilot of some 25 years now but I’ve always wanted to have a go of the Huey ever since reading Chickehawk, now I can. It is so much fun to fly and although I’ve only ever had a pole of the real thing in cruise, it does feel extremely realistic. Well done team!

I'm probably not going to invest in it for a while as I am very happy with my Reverb Gen 1 but I do wonder about how things look a bit further down the track particularly if Vulkan implementation, scheduled for 2021 Q3 goes well. 120 degree FOV is getting to the sweet spot and perhaps downscaling the resolution a little would have things looking pretty sweet. It will certainly be something to keep an eye on. VR is the only way to fly.
