For a contract we were putting thermal cameras on trucks to spot the movement of people in the dessert, we were looking for colder spots against the hot terrain.

I'll have you know that haggis is one of the finer foods of life. We Scots don't advertise our finer foods too often, but I did have to educate my Belgian wife in the fact that it's not just cheddar cheese that is made in Scotland. :D

Oh look NO ANTENNA WIRE  Hope they get rid of the antenna wire, as the Spitfire had already transitioned to VHF communications by then so no need for a long wire HF antenna. They had stopped using wire antennas by the end of 1940. http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/spitfire-masts-and-aerials.html/2

Thanks for that, interesting to see old maps of where I am living, It kind of reinforces the notion that I was taught in school that in Belgium the majority spoke French rather than the Vlaams/Dutch that the majority do speak.

Nor the EE Lightning and before that the P1 the first aircraft to supercruise in the 1950s, the P1 didn't have afterburner and could exceed Mach 1 and was limited to Mach 1.51 Officially the P1 WG760 broke the sound barrier on 4 August 1954,on it's third flight but later examination of the flight data she broke Mach1 on her maiden flight. As I said, it is still used for long distance communications. MF and HF is also used for LORAN (closed in the 1990s) and LORAN-C which is still in use today. In 1940 they were phasing out the use of HF in the Spitfire and replacing it with VHF radios and they still used HF for the IFF but the antenna was in a different location. I worked for Decca Radar Ltd. installing/servicing/repairing radars, radios, navigators, echo sounders etc. The first of the Decca Navigators was used to help with the navigation and surveying of the beaches for the D-Day invasion. :) Edit: A night passage to Normandy, a personal account of the opening phase of the D-Day landings. As HF radio comms is only really used for long distance flights, ie. trans Atlantic, and even that being supplanted with satellite radio, and most short to medium distance communication is done on the VHF, the aircraft would not need the HF wire antenna in todays world. Even by 1940 HF was starting to get phased out and replaced by VHF radios, also on the picture of MH 434 I do not see any IFF antennas going to the tailplane. The mounting point of the antenna on the rudder is also a little suspect in that it is past the pivot point which would cause the cable to slacken and tighten every time the rudder was used which would lead to fatigue of the parts in the antenna, also it would cause flutter fading of the radio signal, while not so noticeable at HF frequencies it is still there. I was a MF, HF, and VHF, maritime radio installer and am still a licenced ham radio operator hence my curiosity. Edit: after doing some search on 't internet found this article: http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/spitfire-masts-and-aerials.html/2

Me too, it was my first PC Flight Sim, it came out round about the same time as I got my first PC "laptop" Never got to see the game in colour as the laptop only ever had an orange plasma display Before that I had flight sims on BBC Micro, Commodore 64, and Amiga.

Those are not wartime Bf109s tho, they are Merlin enginedHA-1112 M1L "Buchon" from about 1954.

Would that be a separate DLC download? But anyway, back on topic: While this is a digital combat simulator we do need an independent 3rd party / civilian non combatant in the conflicts so that we have to make proper identification before opening fire at BVR. It is up to the mission designers to either include or exclude combatants or non combatants, they set the balance of the missions and the objectives that the people playing through the mission have to achieve. Now as to whether I would want to fly a 747/A380 through a combat zone - maybe not.

Airforce One, now that would be a legit "civil" 747 target, it even has some self defence measures ;)

Oooh! looks like an SU47 parked outside the row of hangers on the north side of the East-west runway

They are also switches, one is for intercoms with the pilot the other is to transmit on the radio, can't remember which one is which at the moment EDIT: Left for intercom with pilot, right for UHF radio

As long as you guys don't turn this thread H2SO4 ;)

I second that, got the Bluray a few months ago and the documentary is excellent. The guy's back story is impressive as well, to overcome what happened to him and become a F-14 pilot.

Oh I thought you were going to mention the cancelled project by Rolls Royce, the RB106 engine that was to be a drop in replacement of the Avon R301 with 21,000lb of thrust compared with the 12,000lb thrust of the R301. Would have loved to have seen that fitted to the E.E. Lightning, it was also the engine of choice for the Avro Arrow CF-105 http://www.all-aero.com/index.php/contactus/64-engines-power/13490-rolls-royce-rb-106

It has also been alleged that they have also been updating the Aim54 that they have and making their own version: The Farouk http://theaviationist.com/2013/09/26/farouk-missile/

well it is better you know what it is doing than not, the speed is up and down between 380kb/sec to 140kb/sec I know my ISP throttles torrents back when it is recognised, with a 200Mb/s down and 20Mb/s up my connection is fairly good most of the time. edit: someone took the plug out the hole, it is now over 1Mb/sec :D

Torrent is really slow, this is going to take a long time :( 1.3GB @ 150kb/s is about 30 hours, my PC won't be on that long, hope the updated can continue from where it was stopped
