1. Oldgrognard from SimHQ just posted up some pics from there a couple of days ago, well worth having a look.
2. Only for aileron rolls :D
3. Cameras were my profession, I ran a team that advised on what type of cameras and where to put them, part of my job was pre-production field testing CCTV cameras (beta testing in software terms). Latterly before I retired I worked for a camera manufacturer. The old Newvicon tube cameras were extremely IR sensitive and could see heat and flame from fires that you could put your hand on. :) Most cameras today have filters over the sensor to lower their sensitivity to IR and UV light or you would get very weird pictures. Police and forensic science use modified cameras that have had the filters removed and with special lenses to bring out details that are invisible to the naked eye, Fuji made some very nice modified Nikon cameras specially for this role.
4. You should have seen the exhaust manifold on my Vauxhall Viva 2.3 after a hard run, it glowed a bright red, same as the manifolds on my supercharged Mustang engine, they glow red after a good run too and the turbo on my old Escort RS Turbo yep it glowed too :) but you could only see that in the twilight or darkness. I have read reports that the flame and the glow of the exhausts on night fighters and their prey did give them away and why that some night fighters had different designed exhausts and shields to keep them from being spotted at night. Cameras have an IR filter to cut back their sensitivity, some have a combined UV and IR cut filters depending on the specification of the sensor. Modern CCTV cameras and camcorders have filters that can be removed at the press of a button to enhance their low light performance. That has been a feature that I have been using in CCTV for almost 30years now :)
5. I'm not volunteering for that, my voice is in one game and that is enough, you really need someone with a good old fashioned stiff upper lip ;)
6. The BBMF have just posted a video of a start up and full power run of Spitfire AB910 on their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/RAFConingsby/videos/1640310179599588/ Man look at those exhaust stubs glow! what a glorious sound :) Found it on youtube:
7. I used to fly a little Cessna 152, it had a bird strike on the port wing about 2/3rds of the way along it on the leading edge, I flew the aircraft like that and you could really feel the difference from before the bird strike. After the wing was repaired you could see a barely perceptible ripple if the light was in the right direction, to run your hand over it you would not feel it. Still, after that the flying characteristics of the aircraft were different than before the bird strike happened, in the stall that wing would drop well before the starboard one and it took full right rudder to keep her level, if not she would snap into a spin. So from an aircraft that is known for it's docile handling acting like that, with a performance machine like a Spitfire I would think it would make a noticeable difference to her flying characteristics in some way.
8. Was looking for some info on the RIO and his duties and came across this study by NASA about a decision aid for assisting the F-14's aircrew in the CAP https://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19820005810.pdf On target identification http://www.jpier.org/PIER/pier108/08.10071601.pdf
9. In the video that was posted in this thread https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=175971 the pilot is talking about taking his PR Spitfire to Berlin and back, ok it had no armament and extra tanks fitted where the guns were but it is still quite an achievement for what was really a point defence interceptor and not a long range escort fighter.
10. Was just going to ask that too! Also if that is the full map, then it is only about 160miles or so across. Thanks for sharing Wags.
11. Now that is a subject that I have experienced first hand, not with a Merlin but with a Ford 4.6l V8 Mod motor that has been supercharged. A few cars like mine have been supercharged and by a specific garage that did a lot of tests to get the optimum point between power and reliability, my car went from 239bhp to 398bhp at the rear wheels, but if you look at the fuelling map you will find that it runs very rich compared with tuning for max power. Some other people with the same type of car and engine went down a home built road to get a bit of a cheaper solution, the bought a kit from the supercharger manufacturer and had the installation done at a saving of about £1.5k they used the standard map for that engine/supercharger combination that works in the USA. But with the different fuel (Lower octane in EU) and higher speed limits in Europe those engines failed especially on the Autobahns in Germany where a lot of running was done at large throttle openings and high speed those engines failed due to overheating and seizing. My own car has done many miles on the Autobahn and at speeds up to 180mph and has been very reliable, but it does use slightly more fuel than the other cars that were not done by the same garage. So using excess fuel to keep the engine cooler and give it a longer life is a valid technique. My supercharged 4.6 V8
12. From the pilots notes for the IX The point there is the "If Fitted" in 39 (v)
13. Thanks for pointing that out, the youtube button only needs the "XWXQUhBsUVM" part of the link, if you use the full address then the forum automatically puts in a around the address making the link to youtube fail
14. This is the one I use for my ringtone on my phone and have done so for the past 16 years, but back then it was .mid files on a Nokia
15. MH434 had it's first flight in August 1943, which is before the date you are quoting. I did read somewhere that the elevators were replaced on MH434 to the extended horn ones but I can't remember where or when it was done.
16. You go away for a few days and this happens! Great to see the Spitfire on presale, and she looks good, especially without the washing line! Many thanks ED, really looking forward to flying her :)
17. :( Still with the HF antenna on a 1944 aircraft?
18. My town and the local airbase is not on the map :( But a town close by is that I visited a few months ago to see the memorial to a Lancaster that crashed there on the 21st June 1944. Lancaster As, the town is marked as Asch on the map There is a book written about the flight by one of the crew that survived "Jump or Die" by F/O Douglas Jennings.
19. Cut the clothes line off from the top of the aircraft
20. No that is where you load up Arma and play evade and escape back to your own lines.
21. Lots of info about what equipment was used between 1940 and 1945 with details on how it was used. http://www.qsl.net/pe1ngz/signalscollection.html Other links there take you to equipment used by other Allied countries during WW2.
22. Yeah the mast was still used for the vertical VHF antenna. There is an additional antenna behind the mast on MH434. New antennas were mounted under the wings for the newer version MkIII of the IFF in 1943, the wire antennas running to the tailplanes were removed at that time. link to the bad visibility landing equipment for RAF aircraft http://www.qsl.net/pe1ngz/airforce/airforce-raf/raf-eureka-rebecca.html Lots of info on allied radio and radar equipment from WW2 http://www.qsl.net/pe1ngz/signalscollection.html
23. They phased out HF radios in 1940, 3 years before MH434 was built. Here on a Vb you can see the attachment points on the mast for the wire guide for the HF radio but the wire has been removed, you can also see the IFF antenna wires coming out the sides of the fuselage. From here: http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/spitfire-masts-and-aerials.html/2
24. I'll just have to keep my eyes front as I fly her :pilotfly: Oh look at those beautiful lines and not a single wire to hold her up ;)
25. Bah it still has the non prototypical HF antenna wire on it
