In Vietnam some Hueys would pull NIGHTHAWK Duty they would fly with a COBRA looking for Victor, Charlie, around places that Army troops would be on the ground as one example. The Huey would be outfitted with a Mini Gun just behind the Co Pilots seat. in the Door Gunner Position would be 2 VERY LARGE Modern Electronic Detection systems operated by the door gunner in his position mounted on top of a LARGE Very Powerful 50,000 watt xenon searchlight. Below is a link to a PDF of a old Newspaper Article that has Pictures and is worth reading. https://www.vhpa.org/stories/NightHawk.pdf

The one fun thing I like to do other then Fly a Huey is to play around with making custom Skins I want to have and use for myself. I tend to upload them for others just incase I am not the only person that may like them. I feel that my ability (for the Huey ONLY) is one of the hardest skin making endeavors I had to learn at my advanced age. (OLD MAN) Yes like Grandad old. The Huey is Probably the Easiest Skins to make in DCS. SO today I will drool into my cup as I ramble off about making Huey Skins and the things I learn as I go. 1st off this is NOT a tutorial on making Skins. I want Vietnam Skins so I set off on making more Vietnam Era Skins for myself I posted a Picture of what I have been doing here I will upload them when finished if they are wanted to use. I find looking for Huey Nose Art from Vietnam can be fun, Easy, HARD, Confusing, and why?? I ask myself and after forcing myself to try to educate my brain at my age I find out stuff like Most Pictures of Vietnam Nose Art are only front shots taken by Soldiers in the Field at the time. Thanks to them you can find the pictures they have shared with the world. PROBLEM picture quality and close ups are issues. Recreating Graphics can test you and take hours upon hours to reach. Even cut copy paste can take hours to make look useable on a skin. So you research the Nose Art. You Pick out what you want. You spend Hours with Graphics Art Program reworking and making it useable. Then the next PROBLEM is ready to try and find. TAIL SECTION skins are the hardest to find true accurate documentation on and I have spent way more time looking for pictures of Tail Sections of Nose Art from AHC (Assault Helicopter Company) Hueys from Vietnam I want to make. I am NO EXPERT on US ARMY Vietnam Battalions AHC and the Platoons in the AHC's so you try to read and you find your way to discovering lots of PROBLEMS along the way. The Huey AHC's were formed and sent to Vietnam. Through the years of the war they got moved around in and out of Battalions and the AHC (from what I could read) keep the same name or MAY have took a new name but I can NOT find this information on When a Nose Art AHC name was Started and Ended other then Some Few Documents of the unit returning to the US and disbanded or stood down. SO you find AHC's with 2 or 3 totally different looking Nose Arts for the same Company. EACH Company has 3 Platoons in them 2 Platoons are Slick Platoons. You know Troop transport Duty Cargo Duty Picking up Wounded Soldiers just about anything needed at the time in the Battalion. There is No documentation found (By Me) yet of when the Nose Art was changed or if the 2 Slick Platoons in the AHC used different Nose Art. BUT you can and do find different Nose Art when looking. Some Battalions did not allow Nose Art. I Believe all Nose Art had to be approved before use. DUSTOFF Nose Art was one I THINK, that was more relaxed for use. In Vietnam they split areas up and they would put 6 Dustoff's in each area. You find unique Nose Art for Dustoff's. Again lots of them had No Nose Art. TAIL SKIN is the hardest to track down to Match the Nose Art you are using. I WILL ADMIT this is so hard for me I GET IT WRONG on my skins. ONLY a few are dead on correct. I TRY HARD to do it right but if a AHC was moved to a new Battalion the Tail Skin was changed for that Battalion it was used to Identify what Battalion and Company a Huey was in. You have Rotor Blades with painted markings that were used in different Battalions and Companies it gets so CONFUSING to get correct. QUALITY of Nose Art in Vietnam from BAD to VERY GOOD so if a name turns you on and the Art work is bad your facing a problem like I did with the Sidewinder Skin. I figured It will make some NOT want to use it because I did not use the Image of the real Nose Art because I hated it. there were 2 different Nose Arts one bad looking and the other looks more like a Cobra not a sidewinder and no rattle SO I went looking and used a unreal Vietnam Nose Art with the name. Other PROBLEMS are the type of Huey from the Early model to the H model in game. Firebirds put the Sticker on the Side Window Glass. You can not do this in DCS. SO I put it on the Nose but the real on did not have it on the nose. The real unit had a MOTTO I liked U Call - We Kill so I put that on the Nose too. Not Real but still kind of in the spirit of. I was in the Air Force in the 70's I know nothing about the ARMY I was just out of High School in 75 so Vietnam was Just over. I had a draft Card at 18. I signed up during my High School Year. I love flying the Huey, Best Damn Job I Ever Had. Do You have knowledge on this topic please add to this for me to read.

I Put a 9 Huey's down on the runway on a Caucasus Map testing new liveries. 1 as Client and all others as unmanned. They were in a staggered line across the width of the runway. Every 20 Seconds you see a Flash under the unmanned Hueys. It is the Cargo hook Popping ON as in not rendered then being rendered then OFF as in rendered butt unrendered in 1 second time. Every 20 seconds this will happen. The Client Huey you are in will not do this the Cargo Hook is on all the time. I forgot to ADD that the Aviation Light DIM or BRIGHT is still backwards. Bright is DIM and Dim is BRIGHT.

A BATTALION HAD 3 AHC COMPANY'S AND 1 ASH COMPANY The battalion had 3 Assault Helicopter companies and one Assault Support Helicopter company. This company had, I believe 3 platoons of 8 CH-47's each. The organization of an AHC was designed so one company could support an infantry brigade, one battalion an infantry division. Battalion aviation assets could be pulled together so an entire infantry battalion could be airlifted at one time although this was rarely done. Attached to the company was a transportation detachment for maintenance, a signal detachment to maintain radios, and a medical detachment with a flight surgeon. These last two were assigned to battalion and spread to the companies. AHC COMPANY = 3 PLATOONS OF 30 UH-1'S 2 LIFT PLATOONS CALLED SLICKS EACH PLATOON HAD 10 UH-1'S IN IT 1 PLATOON OF 8 GUNSHIPS OF UH-1'S AND 2 OF THE 10 UH-1'S WERE USED FOR MAINTENANCE/OTHER DUTY IN THE BATTALION 2 GUNSHIPS PER 8 SLICKS

Where is the log file at? I can not open the mission it crashes the game so I can not save it. -
They fixed thing wrong with the Huey only 3 were talked about look at the huey skin now the Gun Mount tied to the shiny skin bug is one fix not mentioned I THINK the Navigation lights on after leaving the airfield will turn off now so the AI is not going into battle with Nav lights on. I only flew off base with wing men for a short distance then back to base but the AI did shut off the Nav lights till returning to base. Needs more testing Could of been a part of 2.8 for some time I just don't know. Ask Flappie he knows better than me. I get stuff wrong all the time. I posted this here just to say thanks to ED and I fly the Huey more then anything so I posted it here.

Modded Missions made in 2.7 standard ver Not working in 2.8
DishDoggie posted a topic in DCS Modding
I am not real experienced with this problem. I made Modded Missions made in 2.7 standard version. 2.8 came out for standard version today but my modded missions crash the game on loading into the mission editor. I do not want to dump my hard work and start over. How do you deal with this? Is there a fix? -
Thank You ED it is a BIG update lots of work went into it. Most people play OB but I don't. Lol it is new to me and I'm looking forward to all the new updates.

Some New VIETNAM Huey Skins coming after the holidays. Sidewinders 117th Guns / 101st Warriors 336th Warriors / 13 th Shield of the MEKONG / 101st Comanchero I took Liberty with the Snake on the Sidewinders Ship the real one is kindo not so good IMO The Patch is like the real one. The other Flight had a even stranger looking one so I took liberty with a new one. Very hard to find the Side Tail markings and I still can not understand how I ever found most of them by pure luck and thousands of search attempts.

I went back and looked at all my names and spelling and as far as I can tell with comparing all my other working skins the custom names just are not a issue with the Huey skins. I DID FIND MY PROBLEM after Flappie reminded me of the Weapons mounts being tied to the Shiny Body Bug so I went in and found my Custom made Weapon Mount was made wrong and after I corrected it, It is working fine now. Also Flappie has confirmed this bug has been taken care of in todays OB update.

The tail rotor is implemented incorrectly.
DishDoggie replied to Tim_Fragmagnet's topic in Bugs and Problems
Good Discussion and awesome facts. I will add just a few things from ED's Web Site and From the Museum of Flight. It looks to me like Belsimtek "MAY HAVE" I can not speak for them and I may not have it right. "Belsimtek is not around any more" Belsimtek use reference material from many people and many years for the model. I have no idea how it was used for the making of the UH-1H. So a point I will make is just the Big one that stands out for me. and that is the TYPE of Huey we are talking about. The UH-1 Iroquois NOT UH-1D or any other upgraded version. P{lease read the Museum's facts on production years and numbers made. Making me still feel we are pre 80's for the Huey Iroquois version we have in the Sim. -

DishDoggie replied to Tim_Fragmagnet's topic in Bugs and Problems
I know you know way more then I do about the subject. When I worked as a State Certified Laboratory Analyst in the Water Industries a valid point to watch for and then Question is coming to be asked. Your reference material is without a doubt true and can be trusted as Factual. From 1972 and 1988 going forward but what about before that time? The UH-1h is from before the dates used and I have no Idea if that matters but I must question what is was for this model from a earlier time line. Even so you can tell by flying the Model that you are correct that i fell it is not modeled correctly when real Huey pilots have said so as you do. I am impressed with your knowledge and the information display you have presented. Very Good Job. -
I'm All for the 1st Picture. I mean Come On it has Ashtrays on Both sides. So Hell Yes. 2nd one is a updated modern non Vietnam era dash and the easy way to tell is they took out the Ashtrays.

The Huey is a Cold War era Aircraft and I hope it will stay that way. They can make a new Modern day Bell if that stuff is needed. Lol I want my Vietnam era Huey Bug fixed but not updated to new avionics. I think I would Cry you know like a BIG OLD BABY if they do that. ED call the Wambulance I think I have lost it again. lol
