In fairness there isn't have the stuff going on in that sail plane sim that there is in DCS. Looks like cool software - may have to get. The other day I was thinking a sail plane in DCS would be cool (I'd settle for a U2 - LOL) -
If you decide to go with the new motherboard and CPU I'd suggest you get RAM with better timings to go with it (3600 16-16-16-XX for example). In for a penny... RE: 32GB it's worth doing if you are using the Channel Map - it's BIG in memory.

I'll be contrarian (just because) and suggest do Z490+10[6,7,9]00K. Intel still rules single core. I would agree on holding out on the GPU. For now maybe buy a 5700XT or a 2060/2070 Super with the intention to sell it down the road when the new shiny is available. FWIW, if you buy a 3080Ti/6900XT do you want to buy an NVIDIA/AMD one or whatever before the other vendors to put out their AIB versions? Personally, I'd wait for the vendor cards so that means it's much further out than this fall and you might want to buy something decent but not top of the line right now. I'm happy with my 2070 Super Gaming X OC from Gigabyte for now - I'll look at the equivalent card in the next generation when it's available. Likewise if you decide AMD GPU I'd wait for the Sapphire 69?0XT Nitro - good value for AIB I think (it was between these two cards when I bought the 2070). Just some things to consider.

IME it 'feels' like the 2004 upgrade was worth a few FPS. No numbers to back it up. My buddy had the same experience. Placebo or 'butt dyno' experience perhaps but definitely not a performance hurting thing so worth doing IMO. I have a VM for DCS server and using the VM at the GUI level seems more 'snappy'. Likewise the VM I have for vehicle service manuals. The upgrade was worth doing IMO. -
This is a great thread for jogging some old memories. I read Tony Levier's "Pilot" a million years ago in a former life and possibly some stuff by or about Kelly Johnson. From what I remember the problem with the P-38 was that in a dive and progressing into the trans sonic regime that the standing Mach waves would form on the horizontal stabilizer and basically make the elevator useless no matter how hard the yoke was pulled. I don't recall but probably the same thing happened to the control surfaces on the wings. Wasn't there something about pulling really hard could just keep the nose from pitching down? If the pilot was good, didn't panic, etc. then he could ride it out and pull out as the air got thicker, Mach number went down due to air density and the waves would dissipate. Was the J or G model the first one to get dive brakes? Regarding the engines, from what I remember there was a long time getting the engines sorted and reliable (complexity!) and like someone else posted the lack of support techs with good knowledge of the engine made it have a bad reputation at the start. Wasn't there some kind of program to get Pacific theatre techs shipped to Europe to do training on the engine? In the meantime the Merlin was getting turned into a legend anecdotally. I'd love to see a P-38 in DCS. I love the idea of a P-40 first to get the engine sorted in a single engine type first. Love both of these planes. If anyone at DCS is reading this - can we get a A/B model of the P-40 with the "pretty" nose for a Flying Tigers scenario and a later model that fits better with the rest of the planes in sim currently? :D

Before I got TrackIR I was able change my view to see the gauge using the position change keys. I forget the key combination, something like Ralt+Rctrl + Numpad arrow keys. Or was it Rctrl+RShift+arrow... If you go to the adjust controls menu and search for the word 'view' you should be able to figure it out. HTH

Between those two there isn't much in it. In my area 3700X is $430 and 10600K is $399 so... For OC purposes I'd be buyng a cooler for either one. Intel Mobos are more expensive. I dunno. AMD is compelling but Intel rules single core. -

I'm really on the fence about a new build. Almost pulled the trigger on the 10600K to OC but local availability isn't that good still. Could do 10700K I guess (available) but that's an extra $100 I don't need to spend on a machine that is more or less dedicated to DCS/gaming. I do work on my Linux boxes, the Windows PC is treated like a 'gaming console' and does nothing else. Ryzen XT I think is just going to be a stop gap - not convinced it is worth waiting for unless the single core performance is something special. Given what current Ryzen does when OC it's not going to be a stellar jump. Not sure Ryzen XT OC'ed will meet 10th gen OC... Best/worst likely pissing match stuff. Don't get me started on NVIDIA. -
I really dig the yellow glare on the perspex when flying over the yellow fields. This is in the Spitfire at low level - dunno if other aircraft show the effect to the same extent. Or at least I did at first. Since the novelty has worn off - it's a little over the top perhaps? Could be toned down a bit? If it's really like that IRL then fine but seems a bit much to me at the moment. Also noticed that the gear indicator UP/DOWN is lit kinda weird - all rasterized and like a masking layer or anti-alias layer is not working properly. Dunno if a map, OB, or Spit issue but thought I'd mention since might be a related lighting thing? (1440p and 2160p noticable). $0.02

T.16000M: - Pitch: Deadzone 3, Sat_X 100, Sat_Y 100, Curve 45 - Roll: Deadzone 3, Sat_X 100, Sat_Y 100, Curve 45 TWCS Throttle: - Rudder: Deadzone 4, Sat_X 100, Sat_Y 100, Curve 45 (JOY_SLIDER2) - Brakes (JOY_RZ): Deadzone 50, Sat_X 100, Sat_Y 100, Slider checked, Invert checked, User Curve Checked: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 (needs tuning obviously). The brake in usage translates to the right hand half of the lever on the throttle quadrant being the brake handle. It's "ok". I also have the slider on the base of the Joystick set to brakes (no curve) and use it as a 'parking brake' sometimes - never use it dynamically as I'd need a third hand to manage it, the joystick itself and the throttle. I started with @DD_Fenrir's suggestions and ended up here. Still needs tuning - been flying the wings off the Mustang and the Yak lately so haven't touched it in a few weeks. HTH EDIT: 2020-06-19 - changed the curves to 25 (vs 45). The slow ramp up witt the stick and pedals felt too "latent" and 25 feels better to me. -

As OP I appreciate the comments and efforts made to test and compare G/V Sync. I only have v-sync so am unable to test myself. Thanks! I've done some more testing but still working it. I watched this video and while kinda hyperbolic there are good points made. Maybe 1440p is the way to go till I do VR. Like I posted earlier - seems like bumping the MSAA to x4 makes up the visual quality difference for me on my screens (1440p w/ MSAA_x4 vs 2160p w/ MSAA_x2).

This - I would like to see both variants. The early variant to make the Flying Tigers scenario - and it has a much more pretty/shark-like nose than the later versions. (yes - two 3d models) And the later variant to try to get the best version ever created. Would be instant buy for me - I'd keep pressing refresh waiting for it to show up like the Channel Map. Ha! $0.02

I'm for it! I noticed birds flying around on the Channel Map yesterday - first time I've actually seen (noticed?) birds in sim! Last week I was flying south of Nalchik and was thinking that those plains before the mountains were kind of lonely and could use a few herds of deer, antelope, caribou or whatever roams in that area. Ha! :)

Thanks for pointing that out. I tried the in-game v-sync and wasn't that thrilled with it. The NV CP has a few other settings that give a better experience; "adaptive" and "fast" seem to be decent and I settled on "fast". I also did some testing with resolutions and such. I was running 4K + MSAA_x2,Ani_x16 and was happy with that as far as what it looks like except for the tearing. I backed it off to 1440p and wasn't happy with it but MSAA_x4+Ani_x16 seems to give the "same" visuals as the 4K setup but is noticeably smoother - less bandwidth I guess. Still some tearing and/or dropped frames depending on the NV CP settings. So, 1440p screens? How important is G-Sync vs getting something that is 120-144Hz?

That's a good idea but for now I'm wanting to avoid VR till the next generation of stuff comes out (headsets, gpus). I'm building around a 2070S that I got recently so will stick with TrackIR.

Can anyone recommended a good 4K screen? I am currently using a 43" LG TV and while it a great setup for somethings the screen tearing in DCS is starting to get on my nerves. I'm typically seeing 50-80FPS but lots of a tearing when panning a lot with the TrackIR. I hooked up my 32" BenQ (PD3200U, 5ms) and it was better but still noticeable and I'd much rather keep that display away from the gaming rig. I think I like the larger size with TrackIR but doesn't have to be as big as the LG. I really like good colour reproduction. Suggestions?

Finally watched this - very cool! Thanks for linking. Time to fire up Blender and see if I can pull together enough models and data to get something in a state that is ready for 3DS Max and TDK. :) It's an amazing amount of work that requires a depth of knowledge I don't have now.

Yep, exactly! This is why I'm more focused on the 10600K (OC'ed). My workstations are workstations, PC for gaming is PC for gaming and does nothing else. If/when vulkan in DCS puts enough load on a 10600 for it to be an issue we will be into another upgrade cycle or two already so it doesn't matter. 6/12 will be plenty anyway. $0.02 -
