Think this would be pretty cool, esp in VR. Have a choice to spawn at edge of ramp and walk out to your aircraft. Crew chief follows you round as you kick the tyres, then when you walk up to the ladder, a macro has you climbing into the cockpit and settling in. Crew chiefs arms visible while sound of harness buckles clicking in. Crew chief then descends ladder and retracts it.

Similarly, being able to climb out the aircraft without ejecting.

Unless you have tried it, you have no idea how big that hog is in VR, It is huge and the external model is very impressive, yet seldom seen up close. Pity I had to take a ride up the rails to see it.

How big a job would it be to implement this? I see that star citizen has something similar.

Edit...

Perhaps a variety of owned aircraft could be on the ramp and choose to fly and the macro starts when you walk up to a "entry box" and the chosen aircraft loads as the entry sequence is playing. Similarly, downed pilots could be picked up by the helis by walking up to the non flying crew doors, where they could climb into the rear cabin to be flown back to base.

No need to own the heli, if the downed pilot can only enter the rear cabin.

SC is a completely different game in a different engine.

As a feature yes it would be nice.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

SC's thing is nice, but it's also tied into their wider FPS section which DCS doesn't have.

That said, for the flightsim side of it, it gets a bit tedious doing it every time when you're doing nothing more than walking, pressing use and waiting for animations to finish.

Wouldn't mind it, but I'd probably only use it when new modules launch, and then turn in a "start in cockpit" option if one was available for the rest of the time.

You can already move around your aircraft using a F key like F11 or something... You don't walk per say but you can move the view however you want. I'd be glad if I could remember exactly which key it is though...

I think the OP is looking for a way of actually inspecting the aircraft properly - things like avionics and equipment hatches, maybe even something like the maintenance hangar featured in A2As accu-sim aircraft for FSX, though this is just a hunch (personally as far as the F11 camera goes I'd like it to go just a little lower for a real squirrel's-eye view. Also I'd like a way of adding and deleting them because at the moment regardless of where you put it, it's tied to the nearest airbase it would be great if we could use the F11 cameras independently (I think EZdok for FSX did this).

Or....just enable external views (own ship only) with the engine off.
IIRC F11 works regardless of external views being enabled so long as F11 Free Camera allowed is checked in the misc settings of DCS.

would love to have this too, certainly a wish. Heck, I'd love to drive up, (or be driven up) in my Jeep. (After getting briefed in the ready room...) do the inspection, and climb into my bird.

Our pilot animations would have to be changed 1st of all. Pilot character movement is painfully s-l-o-w and woefully basic. Cool idea, but do we really have to go as far as including the crew chief?

Little off topic...but before this, I would just like to see a pilot that did not sink and die when ejecting over water. Rather, he has a life raft and can be picked up by a rescue chopper.

If we cant even get that done, there is little hope we will ever see “walk-around” capability.

Sure, nice wish. Would love it too.

But I think we have to be realistic. I think this will be way too much work for the feel of immersion you get out of it. Also, I can see how this is going to be a problem in multiplayer with framerates and/or lag issues. You would have to make different animations for every aircraft/module and so on.

I think we should tone it down a little bit and just be able to get in and out of a aircraft/helicopter with a keybind and no fancy animations. This way you can do your walkaround and see the model externally, but it would be nowere near as much work as the OP described.

I think this is already planned (or something similar), remember the announcement of the upcoming carrier modules?

No.

This is why I only recently joined Facebook; to stay up to date on news concerning DCS.

Is the FA18 and F14 going to have a walkaround feature? They're carrier modules.

Currently the only way to do it is to spawn in another aircraft, eject, and walk either around your aircraft or any other aircraft of your choice. It's a hobby of mine in multiplayer to walk up to people's jets and see what their reaction would be.

But I assume if we can already walk, perhaps that functionality can be expanded maybe a little bit.

Gents, it's a wish... take it in the spirit of that. :-)

"We see 2016 as a big year for aircraft carrier operations as we plan to release both Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier modules. Both of these modules will be incredibly detailed models with working elevators, interior hanger bays, animated ship systems, and the ability to walk around inside the ships. These will be optional modules that would replace the existing ships currently in DCS World."

Why would they give us the ability to walk around in the aircraft carrier if you could only do it after landing?

I understand that doesn't imply everything the OP had. Just saying something similar is planned.

I would read it with as much skepticism as the year at the beginning of the quote. It' the end of 2017 and nothing new about carriers is anywhere near.

If I remember correctly there is a free moving external view which is tied to your aircraft and that moves much slower. I wasn't talking about the airport view which might actually be F11. Sorry, I'm back from a year long break from DCS and I'm struggling to remember.

If you press Ctrl+F11 (I think that's the default binding) the camera does in fact move to where you currently are, however it still is tied to whatever the closest airbase is (which you can check with the information bar, I believe Ctrl+Y is the keybinding) also if you cycle through you'll find that the camera for that airbase has moved to wherever you moved the camera.

In any case, I'll look in DCS to see if I can find an aircraft camera (F4 maybe?) but otherwise an enhanced F11 view should do nicely for the OP, the rest will have to be additional animations on equipment bays and covers (which I believe at least the A-10C has, as they all open during aircraft repair).

Well we did just get new wire trapping physics, and have seen previews of the models of the new carrier modules.
