I have reached the point now where I can no longer keep reducing my settings every time a patch comes out to lower and lower graphical levels just to get a miserable ~25 FPS out of DCS. :joystick: I envy the videos I see on youtube .So as I write this, I have come to terms with the simple fact I need an upgrade. Since the GPU is my bottle neck I decided this to be the best course of action.

I have been offered a cheap 560Ti from a friend, but im playing around with the idea of shelving out for a GTX 760 or a R9 270X. Similar price range.

What would you guys recommend? I have an ATI card and find problems with most simulations. Seems to work fine for games but kind of crap for simulations. I also play Rise of Flight, Il-2 CoD, iRacing, rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa and FSX along with some strategy games like Company of heroes 2.

Thanks

As of now NVIDIA is definatelly recommended for DCS. This might change with EDGE, but as of now, you are getting more from your NVIDIA card.

I would recommend getting a 770 or 780 though. They just more powerfull than the 760, so it is worth it!

what is your current ATI card? and, what driver version are you using?

Given that, depending on the card, using the AMD 14.4/14.6 drivers will improve performance. Search about, there's an uninstall, clean, install process for that. (Not on my SIM rig at the moment to include the link).

ATI if you want the "smoke cheat" for multiplayer apparently. (engine smoke trails seem to be MUCH more visible from much farther away when using ATI cards for some reason)

Nvidia if you want SLI and overall better performance .

Flew with this guy yesterday, he kept saying "can't you see my smoke?" , from 10 miles away. I'm like "wtf man no" .

He was surprised lol

I'm using a 5770, with 14.4 drivers, performance was excellent when I got A-10 when it came out but it's only been getting worse since.

Smoke cheat? nah, actually the effect on AMD cards is the way it is supposed to look for ALL cards, it's just that the nVidia hardware/drivers seem to want to do things differently so the output is different.

Nvidia 770 2GB.

It seems that Nvidia drivers use less CPU, which is very important especially if your CPU is not overclocked.

Less rendering and drivers bugs on NVIDIA (f.e. no exhaust smoke bug, that ATI suffers)

I'll repeat incase the post i made earlier was missed/ignored, it's the nVidia cards that do not display the smoke correctly (driver shortcuts/optimisations can make things render how they shouldn't)

I went from an ATi 6950 to an nVidia 770GTX and it is amazing how much better the game runs, and the ability to turn more options on in the graphics settings. It just looks and runs much better with nVidia IMO.

That's a substantial upgrade regardless of the chipset. You don't see the error in logic when you compare a 3 year old card to something brand new?

I've run DCS on both nvidia and ATI. With comparably powerful cards I couldn't tell the difference if you put a gun to my head.

The 780 does a very nice job with DCS.

Going against the grain. Very happy with the R9 295X2 8GB in my new sys running DCS with all settings at Max...and everything else.

I have the GTX680 and have been noticing a fair bit of lag lately around airfields, it's generally fine otherwise however on pretty much max settings. I don't think it is worth updating yet however, I'm going to wait and see how EDGE responds to different cards and then think about it.

I have a XFX 290 DD card running an 3 screen eyefinity setup with a 4th Helios monitor. I'm not sure if a single Nvidia card can do this.

I get between 45 and 60 FPS with everything on high except HDR is turned off. The sliders on the right are all set at their midpoint, cockpit shadows and mirrors on, tree shadow off. I'm not sure how much my 8350@5Ghz is contributing to the overall experience.

Oh yea, FSAA @ 4x

I have noticed in reviews that the Nvidia cards beat out the AMD cards till you start cranking up the resolution and quality. Then the results flip.

See my Sig for Specs,

I run 3 Screens Eyefinity + 1 for Helios. at 45-60 FPS, I purposely locked it to 30 to stop it from jumping around, and to not waste power by rendering 100+FPS when in empty skies.

I also run TrackIR and stuff too.

I only use 1 GPU in DCS, at least until EDGE is out, then it will be all 3 hopefully for minimum 60 FPS Locked w/ Max Details.

I think I run 2x MSAA + HDR Cold.

I'm Also Experimenting with Oversampling the image to a larger resolution then scaling it down ( OGSSAA ) but I Cannot do this currently due to the DX9 Resolution Limit, it should work for 1 screen though. (And Possibly Oculus Rift)
