Am I the only one really struggling to perform a takeoff in a straight line down the runway? The tailwheel is all over the place no matter what position the stick is in. I try to balance it with toe brakes but the wheel keeps going either to the left or right...

Could really need some suggestions...

I'm struggling a little too, I can keep straight up until 170 KPH but lose control once I center the stick after that. Although I struggled for a while with the P51 also, just got to keep practicing I think. :)

Damn, who am I to give suggestions - I haven't even downloaded the module myself but have you guys locked the tailwheel??

Never say never, Baby!

I had less problems when I started flying the P-51D to be honest. Feel like a total n00b... :helpsmilie:

I think I have. At least I'm doing what the manual suggests...

Another suggestion is don't pull the stick all the way back. Just pull it AFT of center and you'll lock the tail wheel. I noticed that going from all the way back to center would let the tail jump up faster then I'd like. After playing for awhile I realized if i hold the stick just aft of center I can still maintain directional control while having the tail wheel locked and when it comes time I don't have to worry about that tail popping up fast on me.

Yes, that is a good tip as well.

I struggled a bit as well, I admit that my first six takeoffs didn't end well. I exploded twice.

One thing I noticed: If I advance the throttle slowly like I am used to, it is harder for me to take off. I lose control, mainly by over-correcting (PIO). If I advance it rather quickly I can take off more easily.

I've also noticed that for some reason during the take off roll as soon as I input any rudder the pilot begins to breath heavily, like when experiencing over g. I still can't get past the 170 kph mark, have tried keeping straight by tapping wheel brakes and by not pulling the stick too far aft but the same thing happens every time, soon as the stick is centered I lose control and explode

I am sure he is just nervous because you are flying the aircraft ;)

I just had a beautiful lift off. The essential part is keeping the backwheel locked entirely till you are at 170kph then slowly let it lift itself. ONLY rudder for the whole process. It worked beautifuly when following this. Just let the stick come and the aircraft will follow, treat her like a woman.

EDIT: Last part sounded kinda kinky in retrospective, but so be it. :D

Oh yes, be sure to invert the toe brake axis. By default the toe brakes are engaged until inverted in the Options menu.

Hehe this is very true :P

I've managed to take off twice in a row now though without blowing up. I think my problem was letting the stick center itself too quickly :joystick:

Edit: Or... y'know.. maybe those were flukes because now I can't seem to do it again! :D

First successful takeoff was in a instant mission .. in a blinding snowstorm lol. Atleast I was flying into it instead of a crosswind. I've made a few successful takeoffs now and found that if you just go full blast from the start with the stick pulled back and a little to the right is the best. One other tip that helped me was increasing the resistant in my Saitek rudder petals. I'd already reduced the saturation but she is pretty finicky with the rudder inputs until I changed the rudder itself. Just make sure to release the stick once you get into that 170-200 range and she should lift off pretty much after that.

Yes, that is a good tip as well.

I thought of this as well and it made a huge difference for me. Able to take off by locking the tail wheel.

Nice hints here.

I recognized that i had difficulties after centering the stick (made it too quick) and exploded.

Running down the strip was easy, i put wheelbrakes on, set the throttle to desierd rpm, disengaged brakes and running down the strip. Let the stick centering too rapidly is my problem.

I think, after reading these hints, i will have better chance getting airborne but i must practice practice and practice.

With landings i had no problems, after the second try i managed to take her down.

Thanks:smilewink:
