Jugdriver Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I know that the NTTR map is still a WIP but I was wondering if the colors of the map were going to be tweaked? The reason I ask is that I live fairly close to that area and travel down there constantly, the colors I have seen in the many screen shots and videos are not quite accurate. there is more red in the rocks (check out Valley of fire State Park which is less than 50 miles from Nellis). Also the area around Charleston peak is a forest so it should be somewhat green and a lot of the sand is lighter in color, more like a dirty cream color especially in the washes, also the shoreline around Lake Mead that has been below the water line in the past is white and forms a distinct ring that can be seen from the air easily. The eastern area of that map is one of the most beautiful places in the country, there are two national parks, (Zion and Bryce) and three National Monuments (Cedar Breaks, Grand Canyon - Parashant and part of Grand Staircase Escalante ) not to mention numerous state parks and wilderness areas; The Tushar mountains to the east of Beaver are over 12,000 feet high. On the Nevada side of the map there is Red Rock Canyon Nation Conservation Area and Lake Mead National recreation Area, both of which are quite stunning from 30K feet in the air, not to mention Nevada is the most mountainous state in the US. I know it is a flight sim and we are not there to sight see, but I hope there is an improvement in the colors so the area can be more accurately represented. Please take my post with the utmost respect, I truly enjoy DCS and only want to help make it better, but the area represented in this map is very close to my heart and I would love to see it look incredible in DCS! amigastar Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 (edited) Just was asking myself, when DCS will have DX12 support i'm pretty sure it will have at some time. I'm not programmer and am curious how huge the effort would be porting it to DX12? Don't get me wrong i'm excited for DCS 1.5 but i'm just wondering. if this is too offtopic then i'm sorry. Paveway333 Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) Was thinking about that, I have no idea how it looks in real life (not from US) but for me i always thought the rocks where golden/red in color, it may very well have the look of "dirty green" as seen in this screenshot, but i can imagine the green look if it is very cloudy.. But one thing that i notice is that sometimes the image looks really dark in both videos and screenshots, I know its WIP and I'm confident it will be great when released =) Edited August 4, 2015 by Paveway333
SkateZilla Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I think it depends on sun position, camera aperture, white balance etc... Sat views show barely any red, some blotches to the east, but that's about it. Jugdriver Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) The satellite images don't do it justice, besides those are shot at a considerable height, we will be flying much lower. Search any park or monument I mentioned and look at the images, that will give you an idea what I am talking about (or to the left of the nose of that F-16). The screen shots look very monochrome, but they also seem to be shot when the sun is low in the sky to show the awesome shadows so I think that has something to do with it. Paveway333 Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 yes of course the camera is a massive factor, maybe i have been watching to many movies that plays out in the sunset =) But the second thing i dont understand at all, why would the ground (tarmac??) be dark when the sun is shining directly at it? Instead of something like this
SkateZilla Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 yes of course the camera is a massive factor, maybe i have been watching to many movies that plays out in the sunset =) But the second thing i dont understand at all, why would the ground (tarmac??) be dark when the sun is shining directly at it? Instead of something like this I believe the camera simulates an iris in DCS 1.x as well, if you look at the sun, everything else begins to darken as your eye's iris' close to reduce the light, when you look away they re-open allowing in more light. Plus these shots are OLD, there's newer ones in the streams. Paveway333 Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) yes the simulated iris is the cause for the ground to look so dark, it is a really nice effect but causes some problems in certain areas like making aircrafts look like black silhuettes, when in the real world it is plenty of light to make out the color (unless your pointing your pupils at the sun). But as soon as the ingame camera is pointing in the sun's direction it is causing this, for me it would be perfect to simulate this effect if only let's say the center of your monitor meet's the sun.. (maybe they have done that?) =) Reason for all this writing (first time on forum) is that in the version we have now it is hard to get the feel of a proper warm summer day, feels like it somewhat toned down, when in real life colors in nature are really vivid.. Anyhow just trying to make this beatiful sim the best ever by saying what i feel =) CANT WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER! Edited August 4, 2015 by Paveway333
Rangi Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 A key command to summon a virtual hand that obscures the sun when it is in sight would help. Too twisted for a flight simulator, maybe :) Or put on a pair of aviators.... PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.

JD AKA_MattE The original Nevada map from 2010 had the colors about right. Here's a screen to show it plus a RL aerial photo. I am hoping it gets corrected before release. If not, I'm sure some modders will tweak it soon enough. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
OnlyforDCS Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I think colors & effects are always going to be subjective and a matter of preference and taste. No two human eyes are alike. With that said, there is a way to make the graphics quite immersive and all the effects we have seen from DCS 1.5 & 2.0 seem to be there in that regard. You have to remember, it's never going to look as good on a screen as it does in real life. And, you have to draw the line somewhere and start focusing on the simulation otherwise you will never stop iterating on the graphics front. So yeah, maybe not everything is going to be photorealistic, and some people will hate something that others absolutely love (for example I absolutely love the iris effect) but as a developer you have to say enough is enough, this is as good as we can make it for now, and WE are never going to satisfy everyone. What Im saying is ED is on the right track with EDGE and has been so for a long time, and we haven seen everything yet (the clouds for example are WIP) but as long as they are happy Im pretty sure we are going to be too. Palmput Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I think colors & effects are always going to be subjective and a matter of preference and taste. One's desire for a certain variety of those things is indeed a matter of preference, but there are certain limits to suspension of disbelief. The goal, probably, is to recreate this region as realistically as is reasonable. Whether the issue here is color filters or texture color, a departure from reality as large as red vs green is probably not something that should be left alone. OnlyforDCS Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Reasonable. That is key. The community here can be intensely nit-picky, and very unreasonable when it comes to the fine details, in certain cases such as when the accuracy of a certain element of a flight model is in doubt that can be very useful and valuable feedback for the developers. In other cases, such as I believe it to be in this case, when we are talking about color this is best left to the developers themselves. One other thing to consider, the light in any given setting changes very drastically according to the time of day. This also affects the way we perceive and remember places. I think light, color and intensity, is a very important thing in the final product and therefore important to discuss. But it is true that some things are less important, so as to discuss what type of bolt that consumption in a landing wheels. But this case, it is my creed, that it makes sense to help developers on a constructive way with pictures etc. But it have such a huge influence on how we get to experience this whole scenario in the final product, developers try to do their outer residues to create a fairly realistic picture, it is important that they get all the help to do it right. Otherwise I can almost guarantee that there will get a lot of complaints that will not die before they have tweaked it to the right colors and light. So my own opinion, I believe the discussion is justified. Intel I7 4770K, Evga 1080 FE, win10 64Pro, 32GB ram, TracIR 5, Hotas Warthog, MFD Cougar x2, MFG Crosswind
Jumbik Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) Few months back they said that the Nevada looked mostly perfect in the editor but when they imported it for the first time to the game engine, it got a lot more orange color to it and stopped looking good and realistic. Since then they are trying to correct that and its part of the reason we dont have the map yet. ED Team NineLine Posted August 4, 2015 ED Team Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) Really good point in which I hope Mr. Wagner will take into consideration, while realizing this is primary a combat flight simulation, if these areas, where to be given a beauty treatment in art textures & resolution in comparison with the central part of the Nevada map, DCS World could possible have a chance of interesting my dear wife (although no promises here) & possibly other compatriots dear spouses. The basic ideal being to virtually strap her in the left seat of a Huey, strap a HTC Vive onto her head, and give her a full scale virtual tour of let's say the Grand Canyon along with the above areas, in which she'd be fully amazed and please by, hence leading myself to other enjoyable activity's, and benefiting Mr. Wagner by an authorization for increased sells, (or the all important unspoken, no complaints, OK, anyway.).... Just a humorist thought.... NTTR The focus of this map is NTTR. Feature Creep Again, this isnt a wish list thread, please discuss the known features we have and know are coming.
