DCS: F-14A/A+/B by Heatblur Simulations coming to DCS World!

The really cool part is taking this million poly model and by using some impressive technics and texture magic - reduce it into 5% of the polys here to make it playable ...

The seat, for example, is within standard industry triangle limits (around 20,000).

All of the detail you see has indeed been baked from a sculpted High-Poly.

This will apply to all parts and components of the aircraft. By avoiding some mistakes we did with the MiG-21; We should be able to achieve better performance, with better detail.

I know, that magic is called baking, but even MiG-21 from what I've heard has a lot more details than ED's aircraft and we had some "bad performace" threads here and there... ;) Although I'm not flying it myself, just what I've heard, so I might be wrong. But I believe they know what they're doing.

/sniped by Cobra, thanks, make it shine guys!

Cobra, do you have an ETA of when the cockpit will be showcased?

One day in DCS... Vipers will fly along side Tomcats... Bugs with Superbugs, Tiffy's with Tornado's, Fulcrums with Flankers and Mirage with Rafales...

All this baking stuff is making me hungry.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Cobra,

It seems like you're doing a press conference with us and I am very encouraged by what you all are sharing with us.

By the sounds of it, you're essentially done with the 3-D model. Are you in a phase now doing damage modeling? Is that something that has to work in parallel with the systems modeling?

It is very interesting what i read here...for me this model(and pilot head too) is very similar work of one guy from militarymeshes.....or am I wrong?? ;-)

Where i see problem for community:

If you make detail pit with 2 seat and 2 pilot with 40k polygons than for other part you have 100k polygons....I think if we have model with max 100k or 150k(maybe200k) polys is flyable for all people from dcs community....

EDIT: but nice work!! :)

why do ppl think that DCS 2.0 is a completley new and different game..?

It effectively is. EDGE is the new rendering engine, and there's been a few posts by developers about them being different and certain features working fine under it but not under the current engine. It also supports newer version of DX and all the features that brings.

DCS 2.0 comprises not just of EDGE though, it's also going to be combining all the menu section with the simulation (currently they're two exes), along with a whole host of other changes. Sure, a fair bit will be the same, but a whole lot of stuff is changing.

The change to the new DX and all the graphical features is why I've raised the question. Be interesting to know if they're going to spend time making it work in the current engine or just solely work in 2.0.

@Cobra

Is there an ETA for the second annoucement? I'm super excited to know what it is!!!

While our two other aircraft are considerably further along than the Tomcat -- they will not be announced for another month or two.

What's the point on spending time on the current DCS engine as it will probably be obsolete by the time the Tomcat is released ?

Just for clarification... Are you saying the other two modules are further along in development or that that are newer generation aircraft?

Oh dear -- what a huge thread already. Glad to have so much enthusiasm behind us. We won't let you down. :)

We are.

The cockpit is also finished -- we will be showcasing it soon.

Yes -- there was supposed to be lengthier info on the site.

Since there are a lot of questions in this thread; I will use more time to wrap up the project page and include a FAQ.

Already? With all of the systems working or just the basic image? Also, so Tomcat is the least developed module so far?

Edit: Sniped. I got my hopes up for the F-4U :)
