The F-5E is a great choice for a lot of reasons, in fact.

  1. It gives the MiG-21bis a decent opponent, as you just said.
  2. It also gives the F-14 a great opponent, with the right music and paint job. ;)
  3. What do you shoot for singleplayer missions in Nevada if invading Russians don't make any sense? Aggressors, and F-5 is one of the most common aggressor aircraft.
  4. It is multi-role so you can get a lot of gameplay value out of it in a variety of missions.
  5. Tons of nationalities use the F-5, which gives it even more varied gameplay options.
  6. It's still competent enough to be usable/helpful in most multiplayer servers, which typically are full of 80's to 00's aircraft.
  7. It's simplicity makes it a good introduction to fighters.

It just makes a lot of sense to have in DCS. I love the "subgenre" of the MiG-21 (lightweight 70's multi-role fighter) but I'd much prefer to have Western instrumentation that I'm used to.

You forgot one:

*In active service with Iran since the 1970's, making it critically important for the upcoming SoH map too.

And yes, yes it can use AGM-65's. I think the very first one to roll off the assembly line could carry AGM-65A/B's.

F-5A, at least some of them, could apparently use AGM-12 Bullpup (more or less a Kh-23 / Kh-66 analogue).

F-5Es can apparently use Mavericks but I don't know if all of them can. I hope if we indeed get the Tiger, it will have some Maverick capability :).

(Then, of course there are various upgraded variants flew / flying for some countries with many options, some of them including BVR A-A, but they are irrelevant to our topic here :D.)

Oh the possibilities!!! It's going to be one of the most successful modules to date, it's perfect for SoH, perfect for Nevada, and it's still in service in Turkey, so not bad for the current theater either!

Actually, it isn't in active service in Turkey anymore, only the Turkish Stars are flying them, rest are retired. Not sure but, I guess it has been about 1.5-2 years. But hey, no one is saying missions need to be in present day anyway :D.

BTW, if it will be able to carry AIM-9M (which, I guess should be), matchup with F-5 may not be as different as we think for MiG-21 then it's current adversaries, pretty decent range, all aspect, big warhead, maneuvrable, dependable missile vs, rear aspect G limited missiles or "I may lock or I may not, I may hit but may not kill" R-60 :D.

Always wanted to fly this one, beautiful jet! Maybe make a poll so ED sees how much we want the F-5E

Like it or not.. We're getting it lol. I think it seems a popular decision.

Please include a Mig-28 skin, so we can reproduce the famous scene from top gun, when the F-14 comes out too :D

I knew the whole movie was a homo-erotic tribute, but I never realised the F-14 was gay too. ;)

Looks like a Mig19 or Mig 17 icon in there too, though having now seen a clearer pic its labelled it L39. Oddly they fly together in an aerobatics team.

Just watched this video on the F-5E its sick! I really hope we get this little SOB we need a western lightweight! I'd be all over it! Also I think ED has it up their sleeve, they keep talking about Red Flag in NTTR and for those campaigns this fighter would be essential I would think, the movie touches on red flag towards the end. anyways GET HYPED!!

Notice it's identical to the MiG-15 icon we already have. I think they simply recycled that icon until they have a new one for the L-39.

I hope someone does a Mig-28 livery for it then all we'd need is an A-4 and someone could do a top gun movie campaign

Its not that hard to paint the model black and put a star on it.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

Yeah, Top Gun Movie campaign....

So you fly the mission (behind a Learjet with Cameras, wildly rolling next to a Tomcat with swept back wings near stall speed) and after you have done it Tony Scott says over the radio "once more, but closer". And you do it six or seven times, then you fly back.

Or didn't you mean a campaign in which you help filming the movie? ;)

I wonder when they will officially announce it (I know ED kinda did already) but like a section with pictures and vidyas :D

One day in DCS... Vipers will fly along side Tomcats... Bugs with Superbugs, Tiffy's with Tornado's, Fulcrums with Flankers and Mirage with Rafales...

:)The Future of DCS is a bright one:)

Yes, because DCS doesn't have enough trainers already in development.:chair: Seriously, there is no reason to gimp one of the finest light fighters ever built by going with an overweight and underpowered trainer version The E is the obvious model to go with and I'm glad they are. It was the most produced version and saw the most combat in the most places.
