Honestly, why Starway ?

Not against Starway but there are many well known names. Experienced, talented and "older" texture artists than Starway:

Mizzy, Mustang, Rockwelder, GrandSurf, Ricardo, Toby23, B3OP, T@kER, RF13, NRG-Vampire's friend(s), Barthek, Lilkiki, T. Jacob, Dimitriov, Crazyeddie, Jack, GeorgeLKMT, PeterP, Highwayman-Ed, Tom_Weiss, Mainstay etc.

Why this will be payware ?

This should be the job of ED: to keep the base program and its textures up to date (for free), according to the expectations of PC graphics of the 21st century.

Frankly, I don't understand why ED did not announce a contest to modders and to texture artist if the texture overhaul is important to them and to all of us.

But I guess its not for free. And honestly I am really pissed off by this product politics. You pay a lot just for a plane. But thats it! You want a campaign? Pay for it! You want a new map? PAY FOR IT! You want better textures made by a modder, because the developer is unable to do that work? PAY FOR IT!!! Now lets see, what will come next. Maybe fee-based resolutions or detail options. :mad:

Edit: In Case that the new textures won't not for free, the only way to fight this greed, is to refuse this texture dlc. So I call up everybody for NOT buying it! Get one of the free texture mods from Barthek, B3OP or Mustang.

Nothing against the new textures, but i don't expect to be buying it.. I already have a good terrain texture mod, buildings mod, runways mod etc. Unless this drasticly fixes the FLIR problems or something i won't be getting it.

At 5$ i'd probably/maybe get it at some point...

I am torn a bit concerning the textures.

They are nice, but I think it will depend on the price for me. There are very good free ones (like Barthek's) as well.

The better building may be interesting though...

My real concern about the texture DLC is about its modding possibility.

If textures are locked, there may be no way to upgrade them or something like this. And IMO, it's always necessary to upgrade textures. Specially in simulators.

If it will be 5$, I may consider getting it. May be, just may be 10$ too. Just voicing my opinion anyway, of course however they may price it is ED's call to decide, I don't mean to sound like "you should price it this way", that really isn't my intention.

On one hand, I appreciate this idea as a way to encourage talented people among the community to develop more and more quality stuff for the sim, as well as earn something out of it. I appreciate the effort things like that take, and also appreciate there should be some compensation people doing them. Besides, ED as creators and maintainers of DCS platform, would probably need more sources of income off DCS than only modules. While I did not buy, nor plan to buy any campaigns, I appreciate the campaign DLCs for above reasons. Good idea, good practice, so long as they are of a certain quality level.

On the other hand, I worry about what potential pricing on this might be, and how much more DLC-zation might DCS grow. When a few weeks ago, an overhaul of free Caucasus map was announced in one of the newsletters, this wasn't quite what I expected. Now in other threads, I see people suggesting "Add cities to map, and make them paid DLC" for example. This would lead further divide of multiplayer scene than multiple maps for example, besides, that means getting a bit MSFS-ish.

In the end, this is optional, and we already have a somewhat uptextured Caucasus since EDGE came out. Anyway, I guess we'll see when the time comes and DLC is announced.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

@Plagi Arism:

Well, I do think Starway did some great jobs with his texture work, no doubt.

And there are people who would like to have better textures not as an unofficial mod that could stop working any time, but something more official and supported, installable by one click instead of playing around with files on the hard disk that get destroyed in the next ipdate or so.

If it wasn't for people like Starway (or Mustang who is also a modder and created the official textures we have now) we would probably never get new official textures for the caucasus, ED didn't seem too interested in doing them.

Many people said they would gladly pay for new high-quality textures. The official DLC way may be a good choice for that. So if Starway can do it and maybe even make some money, why not. Today it might only be a re-texturing, tomorrow it might be a completely new map.

The DLC way retains the possibility to just not opt in (because of performance reasons or because you don't care) and still be compatible.

As I said before, to me it is extremely dependent on the price. And also performance.

At the moment there is one thing though that makes me cringe a bit: What if a DLC texture constitutes a major advantage for players using it?

This will probably be a non-issue because of QA by ED, but imagine the reaction by some people right now if the new textures make tanks more easily visible (at least before the FLIR is fixed which would make the current textures as good as any others?)

Hmm...

EDIT: also this is kinda offtopic, sorry. This is the polychop subforum...

Just for myself guys, what is for you the FLIR problem ?

I haven't had time to play DCS recently, but I believe the issue is a lack of contrast between units and the terrain. Someone feel free to correct me/expand on this :P

Ground has "hot areas" and "hot spots" that makes difficult/nearly impossible detect the hot vehicles as everywhere are "vehicles".

Well, the FLIR in the DCSW planes does not look like a FLIR picture. That causes units (even pretty warm ones, like people or trucks with running motors) to be nearly invisible on some ground textures.

That's because you can see the noise in the terrain textures in the FLIR as bright (in WHOT) or black (in BHOT) spots, just as if those were hot spots on the ground. In some cases they are even hotter than the tanks, trucks or people.

If you turn up contrast you can mitigate it a bit, but you never achieve something that looks like real FLIR pictures.

ED has confirmed it is a problem and is working on it though. :)

Ok, technically, on the Campaign, I didn't meet this problem. I don't know if the code used is exactly the same. I met problems on Nevada (not only with Gazelle), like white water or white trees.

EDIT : after having seen the screens, I'd say that it's more contrasted on the Gazelle. But perhaps is it because you usually spot enemy units from less than 10 km. Honestly, I never had any problem in finding units with it. But I'm known in my squad to be able to spot everything (And for my modesty of course :D)

about starway's work..

pros

3d trees, forests look rich!

Those are the same old cross-plane geometry trees. Only textures are new.

Simple trees have got 2 planes, 4 triangles.

Some ugly and jumbled tree use 4-6 planes what is 8-12 tris.

Those are not the advanced trees what you can see on the NTTR map.

But it shows what quality textures can do for those simple trees.

For a contract we were putting thermal cameras on trucks to spot the movement of people in the dessert, we were looking for colder spots against the hot terrain.

OMG!!!! STOP EATING PEOPLE!!! ;)

No seriously, thermal imaging is great. But in our case it is "just" IR. In a IR image you couldn't do that. It would just become nearly unusable during daytime in the desert (there are some reports from Desert Storm describing such cases).

thanks for the video. Gazelle is one of sexiest helicopters ever built and from what I see, you guys have done a wonderful job! When I heard that high-pitch turbine sound, so typical for the gazelle, I got goosebumps.

+1 for the video. Looking forward to the release and hopefully it will also have a UK skin and English cockpit.

It means "Goal", And if you knew what it means in french ... :lol:

That's quite simple to translate guys :

M= Marche = Working

A= Arrêt = Stop

BUT= Goal

Mer= Sea

Terre= Land

Veille= "On but waiting, like on your TV when you push on the red button :lol:"

Prêt= Ready

Vent= Wind

And I guess the remaining is the same than in english for the first letters or approximately the same so understandable.

8 words guys, you should do it ;)

She's amazing on the DK2. Maybe we'll have to start a virtual VR Gazelle squad.
