I'm currently in a dilemma over this issue (to 10 or not to 10 that is the question ?).

I love Win 7. It has been the most stable version of Windows I have ever used.

Furthermore, I cannot F'ing stand Win 10's crappy layout. It reminds me of Win 3.1 .. but worse. I find it extremely difficult and frustrating to navigate.

However, I just purchased a GTX 1060 and discovered that DX12 requires Win10.

Does DCS offer much in the way of DX12 effects ? That is, do they utilize DX12 now ?

Another issue (maybe) is my Mobo is PCIe2 and the 1060 utilizes PCIe3 (I'm told I will still get 85% of the video card's capabilities).

On top of all of this I just bought an SSD (today). I'd love to have faster loading DCS World and Missions, but I truly dislike Re-Installing everything. And if I have to re-install everything then I might as well move to Win10 UNLESS there are currently NO Advantages in DCS using Win10 (with or without DX12) in which case I'd just install Win7 64 on it.

Any advice for me ?

DCS is and will remain DX11 in foreseeable future, so no gains here.

When I bought my first SSD in summer '16, I just moved 2 of my DCS copies there, changed the relevant registry entries and that was it, because I dislike reinstalling anything even more than you (my old Win 7 system still runs off the previous, platter drive :D). Loading times dropped dramatically anyway, drive-related stutters were gone for good. Massive gains here even without installing new system, so I called it a day as well (sure, there are poor-optimization-related stutters in 2.1.1 now, but you won't solve these with any system or gfx card, certainly not a 1060).

I'm sure one could get a few fps more running DCS on a fresh, new Win10, but I'm also sure the difference wouldn't be big, so I couldn't be bothered.

Will switch to 10 when making next big hardware upgrade in a few years time. Hopefully, by that time it will be mature enough and their "Creator's Updates" won't cause any driver related issues as they tend to do now.

Okay thanks for those replies.

In fact, before reading your replies, I went onto ED's website and noticed that they still use DX11 (which I have) so I'm in no hurry to update to Win10 (even though the last possibility of getting it for Free ends Dec 31/17 using the accessibility upgrade loophole .. which I do actually qualify for).

But now what about my SSD.

"IF" I install it, should I just put Win7 on it and reinstall or should I just save the SSD for a rainy day when everything else has failed ?

I know DCS will load faster with it but I don't mind waiting 4 minutes to fly as long as everything else works well once I'm In-Game.

Bite the bullet and install Win10 with SSD and DCS. It'll boot damn near instantaneously (compared to mag HDD) and Win10 is very very solid. I loved Win7. But 10 is better in almost every aspect.

You don't have to use the tile display but you do get faster access to app. I know it's fashionable to be "if it ain't broke don't fix it" crowd - which Vista and Win8 validated - but Win10 is a better Win7.

Finally, almost every machine affected by Wannacry was Win7 (unpatched)

They will support it for a long time, they make a lot of money selling games

and to reduce the amount of people you can sell to would be stupid

EOL is 2020. It already is excluded from new features, 7 is already on its way out, at least from Redmond

I can only recommend to secure a 10 license till Dec 31 2017. Even if you revert back to 7.

It may safe you some serious money once you have to move on to 10 or later releases.

Just my 2 cents to 10 and lic strategy

The 1060's PCIe3.0 Interface is Backwards COmpatible w/ PCIe 2.0x16, which a 1060 would not be able to use all the Bandwidth of a PCIe2.0x16 Slot either.

Windows 10 Advantages are moot, if you fly VR, then you'll have ASW, that's about it.

ASW if you fly with VR like SkakeZilla wrote. I'm guessing the new MS Odyssey HMD is Win10 only (not sure). DX12 games (there are many even if DCS doesn't) would be another reason. And the security patches that I talked about.

As I said, EOL 2020, same as SRV2008R2.

The feature lock is already on for YEARS.

...just saying, I loved 7, no doubt, but 10 is way superior in many aspects, foremost administrative imho.

Look at that STUPID F%&$% BS way of updating 7...nearly 300 updates needed after a 7-SP1 install....still doing that pretty often on client pc's..I know what I am talking about and I know how long it takes to install 7 till finsih and 10 till finish and how much money each way costs if you have to pay someone ( me for example ) to do it.

10 beats 7 everywhere, just some will not see or find out. Not every driver will notice all the better things in a better race car. Novice drivers will not notice any change to the better but blame the change for what it is...a change.

Does 7 have Ransomware Protection built in ?

ohh. wait...feature lock ! Nope !! Only in new 10 ( if you enable it )

I could go on and on but you have to drive the car yourself and get the experience over time.

You do know there is an update roll-up that does a large amount of updates in 1 go ? Or if you want to be even lazier use the wsusoffline util to do it all for you ?

You can even slipstream it into a windows 7 iso or usb key

I take it like me you do some IT releated work and have to do a lot of windows installs ?

So you set up one windows 7 machine put all the updates on it, sysprep it then take an image of it

You can then put this image on any machine in 5 mins

reboot run a couple of driver updates and you are done ?

winfuture update pack is the best I have found, still, it takes very long to install compared to a 10 that uses the latest build and 3 updates and DONE.

my 7 is a slipstreamed 7 + SP1, it came without SP1, no need to include more drivers etc. cause almost all machines differ.

WSUS only works in Domains and is a pain in itself, using it at some sites, some dont have Win SRV's

Most of those 7 installs are buddies, neighbors or such, none of the above applies to those.

Dont get me wrong, 7 was great, I loved it, but 10 is imho length better

wsus offline is what I said , and it works on any PC regardless of on domain or not or even connected to the internet (http://www.wsusoffline.net/)

I also do a lot of installs, but being lazy/smart I found creating a single windows 64 bit version that does it all and that has all current updates the easiest way

1. Install waindows 7

2. Insall all updates (roll up + downloaded)

3. Install some basic utils, browser, firefox etc

4. Sysprep system

5. Reboot system

4. Take acronis image of it

Now I can load that image onto a hard drive on a new system in 5 mins

Install chipset, lan, gfx and any other drivers (only annoying part)

Enter windows key then activate, create user account and its ready to go (takes about 30 mins in total)

I had to manage 600+ machine across 2 sites so I had to find the easiest way of doing installs/re-installs

I checked, wsus-offline is equivalent to the winfuture cumulative Update Pack. Yeah, if you dont have one of those it takes DAYS on some smaller machines, thanks to svchost.

I need to look again into the sysprep way, what you say makes perfect sense. But tbt, if the machine is modern, CPU-SSD-RAM you install the basic 7 routine in 25min or less. The real culprit are the updates, they consume too much time compared to other OS's or newer Windows imho.

Anyway, I run a KabyLake and cant even go back to 7, even if I wanted.

The sysprep resets drivers/licence , so if you already have all the updates installed

and then sysprep, that sorts out that part, its pretty quick to stick a few drivers on after that,

thats the whole point about doing the sysprep After updates on on the donor PC then creating the donor image

I just built a coffee lake system and put windows 7 on it
