New Vid Pimax 8k Updated Impressions & In-Depth Interview with Ru Wang (Sr. Marketing Director of Pimax)

This is not good for our DCS comunity. She is Pimax marketing and her technical knowledge is limited. Her maximum is Fruit Ninja and this is not of any usage or details we need. Fruit Ninja is made for mobile phone VR and looking good even on 1920x1080 ress with high SDE. We need more detailed videos which represent some technical details we need in DCS VR playing.

This wasn't meant as a post for just DCS but for the people who have backed the headset in general.....Also towards the end he talks about playing Project cars. That game has high end graphics and is fast paced too. Hopefully he'll post a video soon letting us know how that went.

I was more referring on Ru Wang, this part of project cars is interesting and could give us DCS players more than whole Ru Wang interview.

For the first proper videos I think we have to wait January after first 8K get in backers hands.

Here's his written review

This is my write-up!

I was really happy to be able to try out the device a bit longer this time and in a more relaxed setting than at the exhibition where other people breath down your neck to let them try as well. I tried the following:

Project Cars

YES! As a big racing game fan, this is probably a dream come true. There is no better way to play Project Cars than with the Pimax 8k. The humongous 200° FOV together with the high resolution are just made for racing games. It was tough to get me off this game, and therefore I didn't have more time to try out a First Person Shooter. But I can only tell you: just for THAT experience, it is worth it to get the Pimax 8k. Racing fans rejoice, this one is gonna blow you away.

Frame rate was acceptable, but not super high. The game was running on an MSI Raider laptop with a GTX 1080. That's of course a great machine, but it is still a laptop with less than idea thermals. This one screams for a high end gaming machine that can deliver high frame rates!

Big Screen

I needed to check out Big Screen since I believed the higher resolution is gonna make working in VR a bliss. Unfortunately, from this one I walked away a bit disappointed. Of course, we also had the bigger FOV which makes everything look better and makes you feel more immersed. But I was more interested in the Virtual Desktops and they still did not look as great as I had hoped for. There are of course improvements in clarity. Still, I was quite surprised about this one and I think it is good to let the community know about this. However, I must also say that we had not made any optimizations and simply loaded it up and went in.

Watching a movie from within BigScreen was great though and in the movie theater everything looked fantastic. It was also a great test to check out the god rays and they are by far not as pronounced as for example in the Oculus Rift. The lenses are truly fantastic.

The Blu

Great experience to demo the Pimax 8k's superior resolution and FOV. Loved every moment of it. VR has never been this immersive. Nothing more to say about this one.

It is worth it just for 200° FOV and no SDE everything else is the bonus.

Maybe but for me personally I am looking for more from the next generation of VR.

I hope to see:

Higher resolution

No SDE

Foveated Rendering

Eye Tracking

Better motion controllers

Solid software integration

I would add good tracking as absolute must.

Iite weight and comfortability also very important aspect.

i think its funny people are not happy with 200 fov high res screens and good tracking and are asking for more more more.

id be asking for more time and effort put into the production process to avoid the same thing that happened to the oculus dk1 where many people got told the headset would be sent on a certain date then 6 months later they still didn't have it as they were producing them a few 1000 at a time which took them forever. if pimax mass produce to deliver everyone's at the same time they will have the same quality issues as the 4k with dust in it and dodgy cables.

Well its not about asking for more but if the software is poor and there are showstopper issues it will make the good display useless.

Also if it is not comfortable enough that you can use it for 3 hours which is the time that you need to complete fairly complex dcs mission again whats the point of the good display.

There are many other thinks that are important for it to be successful like built quality, reliability, lenses for sweet spot and focus etc...

I will not defend my purchase of the 8K last night beyond saying that I have a high tolerance for risk/reward. With the main reward for me getting my hands on one in Jan. I think they were truly caught off guard with the response and how fast the kickstarter moved. They pretty much sold out their inventory with 90 minutes left as I write this.

Given where we stand in VR this season, Pimax will be either the tech everyone wants next year or out of business for disappointing their base, if this doesn't come off well. With all of the effort and running this thing around the trade shows on a laptop, I can't believe Pimax is in this for a tiny $4million of break even money at this point. If it's a disappointment, I still have the amazing Rift.

Hey Dogbite, you shouldn't need to defend what you decide to spend your disposable income on at all, because it's your money

When you do receive it, get it set up and fly with it in DCS World, please give us a heads up on your opinion of it please! Really looking forward to reading end users views :).

This, 100% No reason to rationalize or defend your own purchases.

I'm generally very risk tolerant, but owning a CV1 currently I am fine to miss out on the potential "immediate reward" for the trade off of not having to potentially deal with trying to sell two HMD's, if the 8K is a flop. If it weren't Pimax I'd be 100% all over it but I have my doubts on their ability to deliver given some of the past product complaints. Thus, I'll be patient and deal with a back order situation once numerous people confirm the quality and performance is there.

If I hadn't come off my "I'm going to wait for Gen 2 to get in to VR" position a few months ago, I would undoubtedly take a flyer on this and back it.

These are the specs I am waiting for.

I will throw colour, brightness and black depth into the bin any day of the week in exchange for speed, FOV and resolution!

The head tracking I am sure will improve shortly and is really a must for a helicopter's movable cannon to eye prosecution.

Watching this VR head ware with extreme interest.

HP G2 Reverb (Needs upgrading), Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate. set to OpenXR, but Open XR tool kit disabled.

Vaicom user and what a superb freebie it is! Virpil Mongoose T50M3 base & Mongoose CM2 Grip (not set for dead stick), Virpil TCS collective with counterbalance kit (woof woof). Virpil Apache Grip (OMG). MFG pedals with damper upgrade. Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound... goodbye VRS.

Almost $4million in the kickstarter...

Best review of Pimax8K so far. Answer on lot of questions even we need now answers on some specific details for DCS to see how you can be competitive in MP against monitor user. I'm not interested to use VR just for SP missions.

It is still hard for me to imagine how this 8k headset is going to perform for what we do here. Flight simming is way more demanding on a system than some of those made for VR games. The level of detail, both inside and outside the cockpit, with terrain draw distances being so far out.

Heck DCS currently brings VR headsets to their knees in the performance department, having to really scale back on graphics detail just to try and maintain and smooth and fluid experience. Flying at 90 hz over Normandy is pretty much a no go at this time. Thankfully with enough tweaking/scaling back detail one can achieve a somewhat smooth experience with lesser frames.

Now throw in this way wider field of view, and higher resolution and I have to wonder how a Pimax 8k is even going to run DCS with a smooth fluid experience. Granted for their top tier unit it is still months away, but is the hardware even going to be there to do it in something like DCS?

Maybe I just look at thing in too simplistic a way, but I would think running this sim in the new Pimax offering is going to be extremely demanding on a unit such as this.

I tip my hat to them on their good success with this Kickstarter campaign, and I do see it as a good thing for the high end PC - VR market. But I have some serious reservations, but will be interested in watching their progress and some user reports in the coming months.

The Screens arent 8K, they are 8K Horizontal, 4K high, 7680x2160

But the Headset's Input Scalar is accepting a 5K Horizontal Signal, 5120x1440, and Scalling it up 1.5x to that 7680x2160

Equiv to Running Rift at 1.6-1.8 PIxel Density (Different Resolution due to FoV/Display Aspect Ratios).

I still don't get how people think its going to be such a heavy drain on the hardware. I'm running high settings with a DP of 1.3 to 1.5 all the time. Does it get a little sketchy down low over Nevada, yes. Do I ever fly missions over Nevada at low altitude, no.

Take away the DP increase and you go from demanding your maching run 8 million pixels down to 2.5. Run the Pimax at a DP of 1 at a higher resolution and you have no more drain on the machine than you do in the rift with higher DP.

For sure. DCS will be an early test. It was my main influence in getting the Rift. I cannot wait to fly the Huey and Mi8 with this thing. I also can't wait to try Assetto Corsa, Elite dangerous and Alien Isolation.

The PIMAX looks fantastic, it really addresses most of the significant shortcomings of the oculus rift.
