Intel i5-2500K still up to it for DCS?

After 4 years of not simming, I fancy getting back in to it. Recent videos watched of the Hornet on the Caucasus 2.5 map look stunning.

 

My rig is getting on a bit. Will my Intel i5 2500k still be up to running DCS? Its overclocked to 4.8GHz so no slouch, but still old in technology terms. Are there big performance gains to be had with newer CPUs? or am I ok to stick with it?

Theres approximately only a 15% improvement in average FPS going from Sandy Bridge to the newest Coffeelake processors (and DDR4 faster ram) clock for clock. The min fps however does improve and and the general FPS is smoother overall though this is harder to quantify. This appears to be particularly important for VR, but less noticeable for normal monitor use.

 

If my i72700k@4.8 system hadnt died I'd probably have kept it and just upgraded gfx card.

Ideal combination with your processor would be a gtx 1060 with atleast 6 GB Vram. U should be able to run 2.5 in medium low settings.

It depends on your monitor resolution. I`m runing a 20 inch on 1680x1050 with vsync on and 60 fps droping to 40 fps in Normandy 2.2 . Would like to upgrade to a better GFX With more Vram but it´s to costy now.

I play in VR with a 2500 @ 4ghz and a 1080. No, it's not perfect, but most of the time it's fine.

I get the impression that as much of the performance improvement is from the increase in RAM speeds, rather than processor capability.

Yes ram speed does make a nice difference in VR.

I am looking forward to doing a new rig later this year.

Look at my settings.

 

Running 60-FPS both 1.5 and 2.2 perfectly fine with high settings.

I'm still happy with my 2500K, but you probably will need 16GB RAM.

IMO from a priority list when considering an upgrade, GPU -> RAM -> SSD -> CPU.

Based on today's specfications I would go for 1070 and 16GB at minimum when buying a new equipment. As for CPU i5 with highest clock rating and put the savings from i7 to any other component.

Obviously may depend on a specific case as a really old CPU can be too much of a bottleneck for GPU.

if my mobo that my 2500K used had not died I would still be using it (with my 1080TI)

I gamed at 3440 x 1440 with the 2500k + 16G RAM and it was fine

 

Stick with it for now, you are at 1080 ?

Same here, if my motherboard did not die I would have kept it with a 1070 and 16GB.

 

You should be good for a few year.

Looks like the good news is that I can keep the CPU for now and look at upgrading the GFX card. Dont think I could justify a 1070 though, so it might have to be a 1060 6GB unless there is a huge difference in performance???

Works fine at the moment, whats going to happen when they patch the flaw in it is another story but thats true about all the processors out there at the moment,might be worth waiting till Intel fix their little design problem before upgrading.

I downloaded the software updates the other day, but have subsequently disabled it using InSpectre.exe. My flight sim PC is only used for gaming so there are no important accounts, passwords etc. on there.

Ever since my 2600k fry-died I am on the search and havent come "home" yet.

 

I would, pick an Ryzen2 6 or 8 core in 8 weeks and show Intel my behind.
