Yesterday I noticed a major change when having a cold start (which I always do). First thought was: "Wow, after seeing the generator switches being on already in the latest F/A-18C videos, looks like they did that here as well". Yes, the gen is set to on already. Then I looked over to the left hoof side and noticed a lot more switches that I didn't have to change anymore. Those were the fuel regulator (left of the 2 pump switches) as well as all the SAS channels and Q-Feel (5 in total, "the L").

 

Now my silly question is: "Why?" derpyconfused.png

 

I was pondering whether to post it here or in the bug section, but I wouldn't say it's a bug, but rather a changed initialization of the cockpit. I'd definately prefer to switch everything on by myself. Found it strange already that the generators were set to on already in the M2kC. I mean, where's the fun in doing a ramp start if half of the work has been done already prior to when it should be actually done by checklist and startup procedures?

Hey Eldur.

 

These were changed after some feedback from people with first hand experience with the Harrier to reflect the procedures used in real life. Normally the plane captain would be responsible for setting the pit in the way it is set up now.

Calls for a cold&dark vs. "colder&darker" option in the module-specific options menu, for realism vs. those who would want to tell their plane chief to go f... himself:

I admit It feels kinda weird having less to do when starting it up... I kinda liked all the switch flickin':thumbup:

 

But I guess if its realistic.

You can! Two times actually.

Upon entering you flip the switches back to pre-patch state, then start up as usual.

 

Maybe RAZBAM can come up with "DCS: Crew Chief".

Flipping switches all day long, checkin oil levels, wearing different shades.

sooo let me get this straight...you complain about switches beeing in a realistic configuration and that you have to do LESS work?

'controlling' the Ka50 feels like a discussion with the Autopilot and trim system about the flight direction.

Read the Manual.

Read 7.7.1 "After Landing" and you will see why the most switches are On/Norm when entering cockpit for the next time.

 

You doesn't paid for an cockpit with all switches are off so you can switch these on by yourself, you paid for an realistic Harrier Module with a realstic cockpit.

 

Its a flight sim, not a switch sim.

I experienced the same thing happening with other modules before. It kinda saddens me when this happens. DCS offers such a great in-depth simulation of aircraft and their avionics and then you are getting ripped of the need to actually make use of all those switches. They just sit there, beeing fully simulated but useless :cry:

Yes, exactly this! I think this is actually the first time I'm complaining about too much realism in DCS. It's usally the other way around :music_whistling:

Can someone post a screen shot of what switches are in the on positions cause I noticed that to. Would love to see a screen shot and compare what switches are in the on position with what Im seeing in my pit...Thanks in advance

Perhaps we could have a feature(mod?) that sets a range of switches to a pseudo-random position, that way you'd be running through your pre-start and might find something. Some switches might be wisely excluded from that though, say batt or whatever.

 

But outside of that; I'd prefer they be set in a realistic manner, not just all off for the sake of wanting to switch-flip. It's a simulator, let's stick to a standard.

This would be nice. And systems should have a larger % chance of malfunctioning if you skipped the pre-flight checklist.

How about an F8 radio call to the Crew Chief / Plane Captain to "Set Switches On / Off"? It's as realistic as the refuel/rearm process IMHO.

I don't need no stinkin' GPS! (except for PGMs :D) :pilotfly:

As interesting as it may sound, I think the crew chiefs / plane captains are pros and although they tend to forget to put one switch or another in a correct position, generally you can rely on them. Which doesn’t stop the pilots from going through entire checklist - honestly, if you have to check the position of each switch even without flipping it it still adds you a lot of things to do.

Alright then. It's a bit like you don't taxi the plane out of the lower deck of a carrier, but I still would like to have that modelled and if it's just for doing it the other way round to free up the deck... and prevent the others from crashing into me when they fail at landing pinkiepieexcited.png

 

It's just being used to switching everything on that is now on already. No problem with that as long as it's as close as it can get to the real thing.

Part of the pre-startup routine could be to make sure all switches are turned to off manually giving you more value for your money because you can actually operate those switches twice :)

Hey,

I'm sorry if I am hijacking a thread. but can anyone point me to an online manual I can download for the operation of the harrier.

 

Surprisingly I have read the F 15 manual and the A10 manual and found them a huge amount of help.. in understanding the systems .. I was hoping that a harrier one would be of similar assistance

One thing I noticed is the EFC switch is set to POS 2. Even in air start it's POS 2. According to the NFM-000 normal operations should be done with it set to POS 1, no?

I seem to have conflicting checklists. The NFM-500 NATOPS checklist says POS 1 at engine start (page 16), then when doing checks after engine start "POS 2 then back to POS 1," (page 19). No further EFC instructions, implying POS 1 is normal.
