With the arrival of the Stennis, what is the plan for the Vinson in the game?

I don't know why ED just doesn't name ships by their class name rather than their individual name, it would make much more sense.

Especially when the Oliver Hazard Perry guided missile frigate FFG-7, USS Oliver Hazard Perry is actually FFG-46, USS Rentz; and the Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser, CG-60 Normandy is actually CG-65 USS Chosin. Wouldn't it be better if the ships were listed by class then select a paint scheme to select which ship you want, like with ground vehicles and aircraft.

Minor grumbling aside, it will probably be replaced by the Stennis

I wish it would just be referred to as the Nimitz class, it would save this issue

There are differences between ships in the class. 10xShips in the Nimitz Class.

One is a high detail version, the other is a low detail version. Pretty much all there is to it. The Stennis comes with the F-18. The Vinson is the default carrier.

Same thing Razbam is doing with the Tarawa. The "default" Tarawa is the one we have now that is somewhat "rough", everybody gets this one. The higher detail one comes with the Harrier module (which is still in-dev).

@MyTai

Yes, and they are pretty much all internal changes that really don't matter from our perspective. Ships and vehicles are not modeled with enough detail for it to matter.

No, the current Stennis comes free with base DCS World. You don't need F/A-18.

@Bolek

Really? The F-18 specifically mentioned 'includes' so I assumed that's the only way you got it.

@mytai

Yeah, I know. None of which are likely to be modeled right bow either. And if that's what you think, did you answer your own question? @@

A few ships have texturing and even animation arguments setup to support a "tail number" type of system similar to how it works on aircraft. The Tico and Perry are both setup like that with 10 or so names. The interface for it was never implemented.

A HUGE problem with removing objects is that it could instantly break missions. Its far easier to keep the old one around and maybe update it one day OR simply have people change the object type to the better looking model.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

Ok Guys,

The CVN-74 is Part of the Core of DCS World, It was merely released into DCS World the same time as the F/A-18C Early Access.

The CVN-70 is the older Carrier Model, and AFAIK hasn't been updated, so likely wont be used correctly.

It would be nice if the Carl Vinson and the remaining 8 sister ships could be provided in the game with the new updates that make the Stennis what it is. They should have slight differences in their hardware and weapons available with small external differences, as well...

I would be happy just to see the Vinson get catapults and an IFOLS. :music_whistling:

This is the reason.

ED have enough support issues without having to go through every DLC trying to fix carrier changes, so rather than enhance and change the VInson, a new one made more sense.

But it seems to be interesting that there is a pathway for "skins" on ships to represent different ones.

However, with all the refits and model changes over the years, these types of assets are hard to support.

I added the Vinson to my VR Hangar, then I tried the Stennis. Vinson seems much bigger.

I fell through the Vinson elevator into the drink and actually sank to the bottom of the ocean. I saw the Vinson has no lower Hull modeled.

This is actually interesting in itself. I saw a video of an F-18 doing as you said, sinking a long way down, and I couldn't remember that happening before. I wonder if this opens up then ocean for-down the-road capabilities, like stormy conditions for carrier landings, submerged submarine routes/ops and water landings for future amphibious aircraft.

Yeah I know that, but naming every ship by it's name seems counter-intuitive, especially when the US Navy designates them as all one class, there are 3 subclasses and I doubt we'll get any other than the Theodore Roosevelt subclass that the Stennis is. Plus the differences are pretty minor for DCS, apart from operating different aircraft and sensors. It still makes more sense to list them by class (or even subclass) than individual names. I'd rather pick between 3 subclasses than 10 individual ships. It's a shame that the texture setup like aircraft tail numbers wasn't pursued...

Yes it does. Now it is a permanent bottom floor also so this paves the way for submarine simulation if ED like. To test it yourself then join a F-18 on the carrier and run it overboard and sink with it down to the bottom :D

It makes sense that Naval assets start to become more developed in DCS. Aircraft have a significant combat role in offense and defense involving surface and subsurface platforms.

My favourite forms of warfare are at sea and nothing at the moment quite cuts it. And I absolutely love naval aviation, but sadly we haven't got a whole lot to play with... :(
