dburne Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 just got the notification mine shipped today as well. Doubt I'll see it tomorrow. More like Wednesday. But that's cool, I'm off on Thursday! :-) Congrats! Mine is showing to be delivered today by 9:00 pm. Hoping it gets here earlier in the day. metalnwood Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 come on... someone tell me... 68 IPD here and CV1... I wasnt looking at rift S but now thinking about it to give me a little upgrade from CV1 for another 12 months until better options have ironed themselves out.. How much clearer than cv1!! :)
Elnocho3 Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 How’s the Rift S looking?? Specifically interested if MFCD in the F/A-18 (or similar in other A/C) is completely readable?? dburne Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 It is going to be interesting to see how the new Rift S compares to the Rift for performance in DCS. Better image clarity with reduced refresh of 80 Hz. If it comes in the same as Rift CV1 I will be one happy camper. Even a slight drop in my case would be ok. I am currently running DCS with my Rift CV1 at 1.5 PD, when I get the new Rift S I will start out at no PD adjustment and see how the image looks and performance compares. Then if good I can slowly start adding some PD back in and see how she does. Hoping mainly for better image, less SDE, and better spotting/identifying. Going to be a fun day in the VR forum! BaronVonDoon Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 (edited) My early impressions so far (only messed around for 15 minutes in the Hornet).. Headset comfort is way better than the CV1 The cable is longer, but needs a tether to the back of the headset, as it gets in the way. There's no nose gap, though there is a button on the headset which allows you to move it in and out, so you can create one if you need it. I think that will be quite handy. The pass through camera is good, but keyboard isn't crystal clear. Once in, even when setting it up, the clarity and readability of the text became instantly noticable over the CV1. In the Hornet, now it's only running at 40fps, I seemingly could put the PD from 1.4, up to 1.7 and still hold my 40fps(1080ti) Image is much better, clear, colours look good, blacks look surprisingly good, SDE I couldn't notice to be fair. Things in the distance and ground detail were also much much better. Cockpit readability..Fuel gauge etc was clear, switch and dial labels were all perfectly clear, before i had to squint or lean in. DDI readability was better, but still have to lean in a bit to get it perfect, though more experimentation can be had, especially when the performance patch comes out. The map DDI is still an unreadable mess. It's a nice upgrade and one everyone will be happy with I think, though it's not life changing. EDIT: Some other bits, can't notice running at 80Hz at all. I've also just had a quick go of Elite, and that looks much better. SDE was noticable when in hyperspace, but only when looking at the star in front of you. Built in sound is crap, which is fine, as i run 5.1 normally, but my Astro A50's just about fit over the headband, but it is tight. Edited May 21, 2019 by BaronVonDoon
metalnwood Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 How is the FOV compared to CV1? One thing I want to try, that I have done with the CV1 is take off the facial interface.. its a little less comfy for sure but with the lenses so close the FOV is much larger. I imagine with the halo of the S you could take off the facial thing and get the lenses quite close but it will let in some light I guess.

I imagine with the halo of the S you could take off the facial thing and get the lenses quite close but it will let in some light I guess. The FOV is around the same. The headset moves in and out quite a bit, so if you fit it nice and tight, it's probably slightly bigger.
some1 Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 How is the FOV compared to CV1? One thing I want to try, that I have done with the CV1 is take off the facial interface.. its a little less comfy for sure but with the lenses so close the FOV is much larger. I imagine with the halo of the S you could take off the facial thing and get the lenses quite close but it will let in some light I guess. I've been switching between CV1 and S today, and the FOV seems about the same for me. Vertical FOV is better on the S, horizontal is about the same, but that depends how you set the facial interface. You can adjust it forward, but that reduces FOV. However, YMMV. Thing is, the lenses are shaped differently, and it all depends on your eyes position relative to the headset. My IPD is 67 and I can notice I have more horizontal FOV per eye in the S, but that extra FOV is inwards, meaning I have a smaller blind spot around the nose. Maybe if somebody has smaller IPD, then he will gain those extra few degrees on the outer edges of the view instead. Also about IPD, mine is 67 and the headset is perfectly usable, though I can notice that the "sweet spot" is a bit inwards. It's fine when I look straight ahead, but when looking at the edges of the screen, the outer eye looses sharpness. Overall, the image quality is much, much better than on Rift CV1 and that is the most important thing for me. So I'm very pleased with the purchase. I tested Pimax 5k+ in DCS a few weeks ago and I think the image is slightly better on the S, but I don't have one next to me to test them side by side, so it may be just my memory playing tricks. sze5003 Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 So early impressions seem very good so far. I'm just waiting until someone that has an odyssey can try it out. metalnwood Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 Thanks Baron and some1 for the replies. I ordered one and may have it in early June. Looking forward to it. My ipd is 68 so I figure it wont be 'perfect' but all in all better than CV1. It will only be used for racing and flying so for the most part I will be looking forwards and shouldnt notice.
some1 Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 All sounding good guys! I am anxiously awaiting here, but going to be much later in the day for me I am afraid. Any impressions on performance versus CV1? Hard to measure reliably, I lost a few FPS on the same settings which I used with CV1, but that can be easily brought back by lowering Pixel Density a notch or two. And your target now is 40/80, not 45/90. So I think that's safe to say they are in the same ballpark. Johnny Dioxin Posted May 21, 2019 Posted May 21, 2019 You can immediately tell how much clearer the graphics are from Home - as soon as the image comes up for the first time, everything is so much sharper. Even without my VR lenses (which I only actually need for the left eye) it's so much better than Rift CV1. Set-up takes a couple of minutes, if that - you could probably do it quicker if you cancelled the usual stuff like First Contact. All I did was unplug CV1 and plug in S - quick firmware update for the headset, followed by one for Touch and draw the boundary - which I'm finding much better than the original one - and that's it. Have had some hand tracking issues - which was weird, as my hands were in front of the headset, about where your cockpit controls would be (the closer ones). Only lasted one or two seconds. So far I'm very impressed. Sound is total pants, mind.
