COGuy14 Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 New to DCS, loving it!!! But..... For some reason while flying the F18 I can't get above ~630 knots. I'm at full throttle/afterburner (I can see the afterburners on external view) but it just won't go above that speed. Did some searching and found one answer to change "Game Mode" but that doesn't seem to work either. I checked airbrakes, etc. No luck. Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Why do you want to fly faster than 630 knts? Meyomyx Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 The F18 isn't that fast/powerful. It' sa bit like a Nissan Micra. Does lots of things quite well. At what altitude are you trying? What Mach is indiocated? Stores make a profound difference to speed - they all dangle in the airflow and drag increases as the square of the velocity so you rapidly run out of chuff. Sounds normal to me.

Thunderbird Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 what do you want to go more than 630knots, The speed on F18 always based on your load & total weight of A/C and altitude, I usually fly high altitude to consume less gas and fast
Preendog Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 List of F-18 top speeds at 5,000ft for various loadouts: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=245521 Also, if you are new to flights sims in general, understand that the airspeed indicator of the HUD does not show actual speed, but your speed reduced by air density. Your best top speed and fuel economy will always be best around 25k-35k altitude, even if the indicated speed number seems low.

bies Posted June 15, 2020 Posted June 15, 2020 First rule: don't take AMRAAMs below the wings on pylons+racks. You will be subsonic. With 2xAIM-9 wing end + 2x AIM-120 fuselage low drag hard points you are supersonic. Fuselage hard points for AIM-7/AIM-120 have far smaller drag then under the wing pylon+rack+missile.

And now my son....you know why published top speeds and air show maneuvers demonstrate very little of a plane’s limitations or capability You can see how much drag external weapons creat and how much that drag reduces your top speed. A plane with a published top speed of Mach 2 wont go much above Mach 1 at 10,000 with 6 AAMs and bags. It also shows why an F-35’s top speed of Mach 1.6 is actually pretty damn fast considering it can carry 2aams and 2 GBU 10’s internally...so clean...and still travel close to its max
COGuy14 Posted June 16, 2020 Author Posted June 16, 2020 I was pretty stripped down, minimal stores, but pretty low altitude (10K feet or so). Just thought it was odd a plane with a top speed of ~1300mph would only get up to 600-700mph even at that altitude. Thought something was wrong with my settings or the game!

Arbil Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 When you say "600-700mph" were those the numbers your HUD was giving you or did you convert? Because what you are reading in the HUD is knots and not MPH.

Because what you are reading in the HUD is knots and not MPH. On point. Was exactly what I thought reading his last comment. But I would guess that happens to everyone...I mean when are you using kts in a normal life situation (and you don't have a boat in that case)? Cheers:joystick:

Simple copy and paste from wikipedia: Maximum speed: 1,034 kn (1,190 mph, 1,915 km/h) at 40,000 ft (12,000 m) I reckon you're underestimating the effects of altitude and air density. Edit: The number you're looking at in the HUD is indicated airspeed or IAS. That's not primarily an indicator of how fast the aircraft is going, but more relevant to how it will manoeuvre in the current air density. Set one of the DDIs to the HSI and you'll see two speeds indicated in the centre, on the left (true airspeed or TAS) *is* how fast you're going. Fly at different altitudes and note the difference between IAS and TAS. The higher you are the faster you're going, even though that's not what it appears to say on the HUD.
