Surfingnet Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 Hi, I'd like to try DCS in VR but I had some feedback from friends telling me that some headsets that don't have a very good pixel density make it difficult to read what's on the MFDs etc. Is it the case with the Reverb G2 ? (I'm thinking of getting this one) Also, still about the Reverb G2, does it give you the horse blinders effect or is the fov wide enough ? And finally, using a G2 with a 3080Ti, flying above Syria with all settings cranked up to the max, not CPU bottlenecked or out of RAM so the GPU can use its full power, how many fps can I realistically expect in average? Finally, what's the compatibility of it and DCS ? Is it quite plug and play or does it need another software to fine tune a ton of settings (like a TrackIR) ? Thanks!
Steel Jaw Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 VR is a go for me see my specs, using a Quest 2, I use the OTT and get stutter free good resolution. I could never go back to immersion killing pancake. With VR you ARE in that world. 3 "You see, IronHand is my thing" My specs: W10 Pro, I5/11600K o/c to 4800 @1.32v, 64 GB 3200 XML RAM, Red Dragon 7800XT/16GB.
speed-of-heat Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 You can read the MFD, but, you may need to turn your head a little, I really don't notice it any more. Fps is a natural concern, on a 3080 with everything at max I'm guessing but 10... I really don't know I have never tried to run everything at max with a 4090 in VR... It takes a bunch of work to dial in, but, it's not tuning like TIR, it's tuning the settings to optimise performance, a lot depends on what you mean by third party software. Is openxr toolkit third party? It comes from Microsoft? There is a bunch of stuff you can use to help you, you can also chose not to... Well I might also wait for the DLSS update to try VR on my 3080 then.

Is openxr toolkit third party? It comes from Microsoft? Yes Open XR is third party software. It was developed and is maintained by mbucchia. While he is a MS employee the Open XR Toolkit is a project he does for the community in his spare time. Same with the eye tracked DFR. To the OP - yes Reverb G2 would be a very good first VR headset for flight simming. 1 Don B EVGA Z390 Dark MB | i9 9900k CPU @ 5.1 GHz | Gigabyte 4090 OC | 64 GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 MHz CL16 | Corsair H150i Pro Cooler |Virpil CM3 Stick w/ Alpha Prime Grip 200mm ext| Virpil CM3 Throttle | VPC Rotor TCS Base w/ Alpha-L Grip| Point Control V2|Varjo Aero|

Oculus Tray Tool: You don't need it since it's ment for Oculus/Meta headsets. I would not wait to start and enjoy VR. Just start with everything at low settings and then work your way up to see what you can maintain with your current system to get a smooth experience, not the other way around. Reverb G2 is a good headset that was the gold standard DCS headset for a while, and is very cheap nowadays, so a good way to dip your toes in. You can read the MFD’s fine the pixel density is very good but only in the center. So you have to move your head and point it directly at what you want to look at. Newer generations of headsets are much better in this regard. The FOV is good enough but not great. And again, the sides are blurry. Imagine wearing a motorcycle helmet, or eyeglasses. You do lose peripheral vision but you also adjust to it pretty quick and it just becomes normal. You cannot crank the settings in Syria and expect good results. Everything maxed out? A slideshow. You will learn that a 3080Ti does not have enough VRAM. Maybe 20-30fps (guessing here). But dial everything back a small amount, run the MT build, you can expect to maintain steady 45fps at all times which will be motion smoothed (frame interpolated) to 90HZ in the headset and the result is very playable. To get true 90FPS you would need a 4080/4090 or run medium/low settings. The headset is pretty plug and play but there is a lot of tweaking you can (and probably should) do to get maximum performance and visual clarity. It’s a pretty deep rabbit hole you can go down with reshaders and OpenXR foveated rendering and such. Before MT and upgrading to 4090 I know the civilian traffic would kill my frame rate. Even if you are in MT I would start with Traffic off and work up from there.
