seikdel Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Reading through the BS manual dated 2011, under "flight preparation" & "ADF activation and checks" It states to move the NDB switch from Auto (Default) to the inner position, complete checks and then the outer position for checks. It then states to leave the NDB switch in the outer position. Is this correct? Does it matter? Also is 2011 the latest version of the BS manual? Thanks You can leave it in outer if you wish. I'd recommend it. Airfields that don't have two markers (e.g. Sochi) typically have their sole marker set to the outer one. Airfields that do have two markers (e.g. Krymsk) have both an outer an and inner, so if you're flying an approach, you'll want to pick the outer first. Here's a thread about flying IFR approaches using the ARK, and I've attached a list of the ARK entries for all the airfields (not mine, but I can't find the thread it's from): [ATTACH]79600[/ATTACH] Finally, here's a post about tuning the ADF to the many other miscellaneous NDBs located in the game. Hope that helps! Anything unclear or need more detail?ARK scripts for all airports.txt

seikdel Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Does having the navigation light's on make it any easier for the bad guys to spot you in the sim? According to the manual, yes. I don't know if the NV-friendly formation lights do or not.
TimeKilla Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Does having the navigation light's on make it any easier for the bad guys to spot you in the sim? Even if it does not it would be best to get used to turning them off make things feel as real as you can am sure i read somewhere they do tho something about the enemy getting extra targeting points at a certain distance more than what they would if there off. :book: :joystick: YouTube :pilotfly: TimeKilla on Flight Sims over at YouTube.
Bucic Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Does having the navigation light's on make it any easier for the bad guys to spot you in the sim? Yes, but only for some classes of units. One of ED testers would be required to elaborate on the subject. sollymans Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Struggling with formation flying Hi everyone, Does anyone have any tips for helping with missions that involve formation flights. I am trying to complete the search and rescue mission in Black Shark where I have to escort a rescue aircraft to a pick up zone and then back to base. There seems to be no way of seeing the other aircraft in the ABRIS view so if/when I loose visual contact behind the HUD or other window obstructions I am having a great deal of difficulty re-acquiring the aircraft to enable me to move back into formation. Is there a way to highlight the other aircraft on the ABRIS as you can with the wingman or is it just a case of visual contact only? Thanks Sollymans
sollymans Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Cold start up configuration Hi there, I can't seem to find an option to tell Black Shark that I would like to start every campaign mission from a cold start up instead of engines running so I am assuming that there must be an LUA file edit somewhere. Does anyone know which file I would need to edit. Appologies if this is a really simple fix but I have been looking and looking and just can't find it. I just wanted to add to the realism a little Many thanks Sollymans

Thanks Sollymans The ABRIS datalink where you can see other flights is as far as I know only for Ka-50. It's a real pain to try and find a helicopter again :) If you do lose track, visualize the route, speed and altitude he's flying and if possible fly low to make him an object in the sky along ridges and such. Rusty_M Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Does having the navigation light's on make it any easier for the bad guys to spot you in the sim? I think so. I once turned them on at the start of the "Alarm"/"Alert" mission and got so badly shot up I couldn't take off. This was before the artillery strike arrived. The world is going mad. Me? Mike Busutil Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 I have been flying night missions and am using the NVG's, I noticed the “Shkval” TV does not like night missions. I have read the manual trying to find out if there is a way to change the “Shkval” TV to night mode or something but I have not had any luck. I did find this, "The I-251 (И-251) “Shkval” electro-optical targeting system is designed to detect targets via electro-optical imagery that provides 7x and 23x magnification under visual, daylight conditions. It can then process that information and use it for automated targeting and weapons delivery.? How are night missions normally completed if the “Shkval” Tv is no good at night? GGTharos Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 They're not. The NVGs are for night-time navigation. Ka-50's are not meant to engage in night-time combat. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

159th_Falcon Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 They're not. The NVGs are for night-time navigation. Ka-50's are not meant to engage in night-time combat. True, though it can launch illumination rockets. Whit some experience they burn just long enough to engage and hit 2 targets. Alternatively, fly in multiplayer and have SU-25 (T's) drop Illumination Bombs. Which burn significantly longer and a bit brighter to. So even though it wasn't designed for it, its definitely possible to fly night missions. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)
GGTharos Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Yep, you are correct. There are limited night fighting abilities if you do things right, but you can't roam the skies and just look for targets like in daylight. Whole lot of nothing and all of a sudden the sky around you lights up whit tracers. And that's if your lucky.:D Also, i have seen people use the search light in MP to search for enemies in the dark.......... cichlidfan Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 I think manually editing the campaign files is the only way to achieve this. seikdel Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 I have been flying night missions and am using the NVG's, I noticed the “Shkval” TV does not like night missions. As has been mentioned, illumination flares make night fighting possible, but not easy. If you're carrying the S-8OM, get 5-7km away from target area, pitch back to 30-45° and fire off as many rockets as you'd like (I typically do 2-4 bursts of 2 rockets). Level out, regain control if necessary (she doesn't like pitching up very much), and then wait for an agonizing ~15sec for the flares to light up. The downside to the S-8OMs is their short duration. It's a lot easier to do this in MP if you have a wingman. You can launch rockets every 10sec while he searches and engages, and then trade off. Alternatively, call up an A-10 or a Su-25 to light up the area for you =D With the Shkval, adjust the brightness and contrast. IIRC, RCTL + RSHF + [ or ] and RALT + RSHF + [ or ]. You'd be impressed how well the Shkval works in low-light conditions.
roob Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 How are night missions normally completed if the “Shkval” Tv is no good at night? You can aim the Shkval manually on target, which is doable if the heli and target isn't moving or moving particularly fast. Sometimes the Shkval goes haywire though and ruins the shot... Sometimes the Shkval goes haywire though and ruins the shot... Additionally, if you're willing to get close enough, you can boresight the gun and/or rockets and just aim the old-fashioned way. Again, this requires that you get pretty darned close, but if you're clearing out something that doesn't shoot back, this can be fairly effective.

crassus Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Did I Even Upgrade to Black Shark 2? While flying I've noticed that the cockpit shadows aren't as dynamic as I've seen them demonstrated in some videos on YouTube. Portions of the 'pit do get darker or lighter.... but I'm not seeing what is demonstrated here: So now I'm wondering if I have even upgraded my copy of Black Shark, purchased through Steam, to Black Shark 2, or did I buy and install an upgrade for Black Shark 2. I bought "DCS: Black Shark 2 Upgrade 1.2.3" when it was $9.99, but as I mentioned earlier, I'm not seeing much in the shadow department and I am wondering if I goofed and bought the wrong product. My graphics settings inlcude: Shadows: High HDR: Normal
Luzifer Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 There's a separate setting for cockpit shadows, if I remember right. Make sure that is on. 1
