I asked because "due to developing a new approach that will improve this and all maps" indicates it isnt just a one map thing.  Obviously it could be lots of things but I perhaps though that the popping veg in arid maps and the strict draw distance of grass and clutter, that has been a very obvious nuisance since PG, might have finally got some attention.

Thanks for replying.

Yeah, it bugged me for a long time as well, and in fact, has been brought up by me and BIGNEWY as well, the response way back when was performance but I think that is less of an issue now, so I want at least the option to expand this render distance out so that people can choose to render farther, and as you or maybe someone else said, with helicopters, it's more a thing than fixed wing.

Yup, we need to adapt our options with the new cards, that said there are still players rocking the 10XX series cards, so its always going to be a balancing act.

Surely that what options are for? The popping bushes predate even the 10 series cards. The short range bushes possibly go back to the start of the Caucauses where they were seemingly used as forest floor filler to make forest look dense and dark. I dont know if some of that carried over (and over and over) or a once heavy hit on a GTX680 was never looked at again. Certainly the grass clutter is also way to conservative for 2024.

I dont understand how I can fly over a huge forest in a temperate map and even in the valleys of Syria but, somehow a few bushes in an otherwise sparse arrid map is regarded as a huge performance risk.

But we also need to move on 10XX series cards started back in 2016, people playing on those cards shouldn't limit people playing on high end gear, I'm glad to hear you are both on board with this 🙂 hopfully it can be sorted out to make helicopter flying in DCS even more immersive

Oh I am not saying we shouldnt adjust our settings, I was more making the point that not everyone can afford the latest and greatest, its possible that we were leaning to hard towards older systems than we should be with this one setting, its also possible it just slipped through the cracks, but I am beating that drum now.

Its tough, I know a lot of people enjoy DCS, and I have never been a fan of forcing hardware upgrades, that said, you are right and there should be a cut off, but its hard to determine than when you are living inside a world economy not just one or two.

Its harsh but this should have been addressed before ED started chucking the latest round of helos out really. In the grand scheme its perhaps not a huge issue in comparison with stuff on the bugz list but equally Its not like its not been raised many times by the helo and mud plugging community over the years. Its not a new thing brought about by new maps.

But, I'll go with with the fact you are banging the drum and thank you for it.

New, better graphical options can be nice but not at the cost of performance. If something is going to affect performance (even range of rendering) let it be as a user selectable option so that everyone can continue to enjoy DCS at its current level. I think the MT version has greatly improved performance, plus map streaming. Those were great moves, so it's interesting to see what else the future will bring.

I have to agree. Sliders and levels all the way IF performance is knocked but equally how is flying over a forest any less performance impactive than flying over empty desert with bushes? Im struggling to see how that is.

Yes please. Sliders and options for every obscure and hidden setting there is. With "hover messages" explaining the feature, and the page in the manual, if there's lots of text.

Due to the big size of the latest updates and the upcoming improvements: would it be possible to divide the future updates in two or even more parts (e.g. single map updates + core and aircraft files). I think a lot of people (including me ;-)) have to juggle with free disk space and have to uninstall and reinstall files.

How would that work better for you?

Still need to download the update, right? So if you download it in one go or in parts... Or if you don't want to update particular terrain then uninstall it since not used right? Then you will install it if ever want to use it and it will install its latest version. No? Get a bigger drive 🙂

He meant to split the Update into parts, as in: Part I - Core Game Updates, Part II - Kola Map Update, Part III - Syria Map Update, Part IV - Aircraft Updates, Part V - Campaign Updates. That you can individually select, one or more, and then download, decompress and install, one at a time, or all at once, if you have enough disk space.

Actually, I think this is a good idea!

In other words, the updates per module/core should be downloaded and updated individually and sequentially, right? Not a bad idea for users with less space.
Do as @Gierasimov says and make it a wish in the Wishlist forum.

But this is pointless, it will make an even bigger mess, especially since some things use the same textures (e.g. from the Bazar), etc. I propose another solution, so that the Launcher is also a Disc Manager - like in the ORBX application (ORBX Central), where the user chooses where to install what, modules on one disk, maps on another, etc. In this way, he can manage the space on the disk and the problems with space will disappear. Recently, more and more people write about problems with free space. DCS has all the files in own folder plus Saved Games. The future is to possibly divide it into different disks and such an option should be in the Launcher as an option for managing the installation path. Simple and functional. My DCS is currently around 1TB, with more maps + next year modules it will quickly take up space around 1.5TB in 2025.

Actually the Installer checks the checksum of files installed, already, so it downloads only what's needed.

Also, it is about splitting the 150 GB plus downloads into smaller chunks, especially, as there's a need for temporary decompression of the files, before they can be copied/installed.

For the install location manager, I suggest to open another wishlist post, as it is a separate thing, but a good idea, as well. Both concepts can work in parallel and both have their benefits.

I suspect that the draw distance issues with grass and clutter is an engine or DX issue. I'm not expecting this to be solved by a simple slider adjustment. They can likely squeeze another 20% out of it but its not going to yield the 10X + needed to get a reasonable extension that make pop in less distracting. I'm guessing this will be addressed in V3.0+ as it's been unchanged since 1.5 or before DCS world (somewhere about there)
