As much fun as the KA-50 seems, I appear to absolutely FAIL when it comes to flying it. Maybe I'm just not a chopper pilot?

Still, I'd like to learn. Trouble is, the tutorials don't work 'cause of the new patch I've installed, and to be honest, I found the tutorials a little difficult to completely comprehend as well.

Any other video tutorials out there?

EDIT: Holy crap this thread got a lot of replies, and I forgot to subscribe to it. :O Well, fixed that now. Anyway, I also have an X52 flight stick. Before I do anything, I need a profile for it that doesn't suck. >.> I'm sure you guys could easily help out on that.

not really sure about how much time you have spent in the shark,

if at first i could of had some advice it would have been something like:

hit flight director, enter hover & trim,

learn how you fly it, then learn how to fly it

(as in entering FD gives you control, with it off you learn to let it fly you)

Look at all the producer's notes on youtube or via download.

Also, look at the "Leading Edge Training" video If you want to know how to get up off the ground the RIGHT way.

That is how I learned to drive this baby without too much reading.

EDIT: Also, If you think you are just not that good at simulators, Try IL-2 STURMOVIK 1946.

It will quickly get you into the "Feel" of realistic flight mechanics without the vertical learning curve and you can pick it up on amazon for about 16 bucks.

I think if I hadn't clocked 50 hours into that game before I played this one, I would have never managed to fly this thing.

The secret to flying the KA50 is the Autopilot so when you are in the pit on the ground after the engine is started look down and on the right side the 4 blue buttons for autopilot channel make sure those are on. Next ensure that the trim button is mapped to one of your hotas buttons as well as the auto hover button both very important to flying this thing. Next is the hover test increase cyclic and place the FPM on the horizon in the hud and push the trim button so you are in a stable hover. Rise to about 30m and then push the stick forward to FPM negative 5 degrees in the hud and push the trim button, it'll now pick up speed when you're at 200k/hr push r and the aircraft will fly itself.

To stop and hover again push r to turn off the route mode pull the stick back to +10 degrees on the FPM and push trim(depending on the mode in the setup you will also need to centre the stick after each push of the trim button), when you bleed off the speed to 30km/hr lower the fpm to the horizon line in the hud and push trim again then push auto hover and it'll hover. Note for slow acceleration and deceleration its +/- 5 degrees for rapid acceleration and deceleration is +/-10 degrees.

Spades_Neil, I can also provide some training for you if you so desire. It would be done in a multiplayer flight so you can watch various maneuvers performed, I can watch you fly and provide instruction, and communication would be done by voice over teamspeak 3. PM me if you are interested.

Spades_Neil,

If it makes you feel any better, for the first several months I had so many problems flying in so many different areas, I thought I would never get it right.

I would say after a year I was finally able to fly with some confidence.

It take a while to learn how to master flying this thing. Please take your time, be patient and it will come. The reward for doing this is incredible and you will see why DCS BS is such an amazing simulator!

It's already been said, but basically everyone sucks at flying helicopters at first. They're just hard to pilot in general.

What they lose in complex avionics (and let's be clear, the Black Shark is pretty simple compared to most aeroplanes), they make up in sheer piloting difficulty. But that's simply the nature of the beast. You will need practice, practice, and practice.

But that's the nice part about this sim: nobody is stopping you from practicing while flying actual missions and having fun. :)

That's something I learned a long time ago: don't try to become a great pilot at the expense of having fun. You do NOT need to be a pilot who can do coordinated turns and fly perfect landing patterns and the likes before doing actual combat missions.

There comes a point when you should just start flying campaign mission and enjoy yourself. Sure, at first you won't be perfect and struggle on landings and the likes, but you will still be having fun AND you will improve your piloting as you do so.

You should take some lesons from others offering help. Here is an example.

It took me at least a week to figure the flight systems out, what with all the auto-pilot, AP over-ride, trim/trim hold and all the procedures involved when flying the shark. It took me another couple weeks to actually get stable co-ordinated flight. Another week or so to learn combat systems. Another week or so to combine flying and combat. So on and so on.

My friend came around to have a turn. She was flying down the coast and back and rolling landing within 30 minutes. Her 18 yo daughter was flying well, landing, hovering, using shkval, shooting targets and dive bombing (at night) within 3 hours.

With out any help, be prepared to take a long time to learn and I mean months.

QuickCam you can download it from GoG.com (Good Old Games), D2D (Direct 2 Drive) or Steam (ummmm Steam) for $9.99. Also Spades_Neil I can show you no less than 3 (4 if you want to count vertical) things (besides autohover thats a given) to help you get into a steady hover. I can teach you to use instrumentation and your HUD to achieve this. Visit us at:

Damn! Still so many people struggling to get used to BlackShark... For me it's quite easy but completely different from flying a jet. It's like a ballet.

some people have not even bought DCS:BS yeat. Think of all the problems we will have with the systems in the A-10C. Going to be a whole lata "how do you git this to work" "I cant get this to turn on" " why dot my dingel hopper spin to the left and not the right?" :D You know the questions that are easly ansered just buy opening the MANUAL. CAT_101st you should never tell someone to read the manual. Chances are they are new to sims and very frustrated. Telling them to go read the manual just adds to the frustration. They could possibly quit and not play again (I've seen it happen). Not only that but DCS sims are so complicated I think even people who do play sims get overloaded trying to do too much at once. After all on a complexity scale we have not seen anything like DCS before. Let's grow our hobby , not run people off because they are frustrated and think we think were too good to help them out.

I agree that some people can be put off by having to expend even the slightest amount of energy to achieve results. However, we can tell them that they have to put in effort without giving an impression that we are too good to help anyone, because we aren't. If someone has a good, specific, question about something, I'll help them arrive at an answer if I can. If their question is answered within the first few pages of the manual that they didn't even make an effort to read, do they really have the right mindset to be flying a study sim?

I have to agree with CAT_101st on this one. If you don't want to read the manual, don't fly, it's that simple. Sure, we want to grow the hobby, but we need the right people to do it.

Okay, rant over.

I have no problem helping people out that are new. But most people new to flight sim's and flying in genral just don't know how much they realy need to read the manual. I have offered my TS3 sever and myselff up to train anyone that wants to learn. No requirement to join my groop, only my forum for eas of contacting each other outside of E-mail. I just reques that they know the basic information like what all the gauges are and their use. If I know a new guy is comming with no flying back ground or flight sim time. I can plan ahead ot time a training corse to get them up to speed ASAP. But the basicks can be learned just by reading the first 2 chapters in the manual. thoes are the questions that bug me the most. "What is the PVI 800?"

Been flying on and off since the BS each time I come back to it I learn something new and get a bit smoother everytime. I can suggest you dont focus on combat untill you can fly point to point in diffrent modes. Adding combat to the mix will make it harder to focus on flying.

Posted

Flying this thing is cake, if you have ever flown a collective pitch R/C heli. The autopilot modes give me a headache, especially, the heading hold. When the heli is trimmed, does the computer remember that heading and return back to it irregardless of further rudder input? On an R/C heli, the heading hold gyro will hold the heading until further rudder input to set a new heading. In BS, it seems that you have to retrim every time to set a new heading.

Check out the producers notes:

Or check them out on youtube look for videos by wagmatt

This this this.

Someone from another thread suggested hover-taxiing around the airfield. That helps a lot. I consider myself a decent pilot for this thing, and that helped me with minute meanuvers at low speeds, so try that out.

If you only fly single player it is a long road to learn by yourself. If you have at least watched the producer notes videos, jump online and fly with people online. Get on their teamspeak server etc. Don't be afraid to ask for help, most BS pilots are friendly and can offer lots of useful information. Most people aren't going to criticize you for being new to the game as everyone that flys it had to learn just like you.

I've been flying with several new people that bought the game on Steam who have never flown a helicopter in a sim before. After about 2 weeks of flying online they have all the basics down and are decent shark pilots.

Sometimes we get the occasional person that just downloaded the game and comes on without having configured their controls or anything and asks how to "turn it on" and I refer them to the video section. I just wish that ED hadnt removed the training tracks without at least telling you where to look at the videos (like in FC2) I think people with steam start out at version 1.02 so have no real way to revert back to an older version.
