If the connect comes out with tracking that is as smooth as my track ir then I will jump on it in a flash.

I wonder how much light it requires though. I am often flying in a dimly lit room.

With Microsoft ready to catch you with Dollar signs twinkling in their eyes :P

Kidding aside, wonder what they'll be charging for it.

Been waiting for it since last year when first "rumors" were being discussed.

Kinect will most definitely... over time... prove to be far more versatile and capable than TrackIR. Think about reaching out with your hand to actuate switches in the "DCS" cockpit, or using your hands rather than the mouse to operate your PC. All of these features are a possibility with Kinect.

Kinect vs TrackIR?

Tracking of fingers in a complex scene...

but how will Kinect actually help track your head movements, I wonder :megalol:

No kidding, there will be a lot more precision necessary to do this with Kinect.

I guess FreeTrack with the WebCam is better prepared for the task...

Kinect excels at complex body movements and can even track more than one person, but not a single face on more than a basic level at the moment.

Next time, do more research.

Yep! Totally agree. That looks much more like it.

I was just aware of the uses and skeletal results in my post.

Seems there is already a lot of invented code available doing more than that.

So let's see when it can read my lips so I can use speech recognition in noisy environments :smilewink:

Indeed, the Kinect SDK is quite promising... and the hardware aspect of it (which I am sure will improve over time) will provide ample resolution... imagine 3D models of pilots mimicking your every move.

What appeals even more is the aspect of a rendered arm mimicking your flicking switches... combine that with a haptic-feedback glove (some low voltage emission when "touching" a switch or button) .

Awesomeness +100 :bounce:

Kinect for Xbox has been out on the market for awhile now... and it goes for $130-150, if Microsoft bundles it with a game/software I bet the price will be within the $150-200 mark. The hardware itself is not expensive.

Edit: Keep in mind... TIR5 goes for what... $170 or so?

I have a TrackIR and a Kinect, I'd love to be able to just sit down in front of my PC and use the Kinect for head tracking than have to put on a cap or some other refelctive material or LED array for TrackIR

Ha! I already get weird looks from the wife when I play with TIR clipped on and moving my head side to side. Ah well, in for a penny, in for a pound. Gonna have to get the anti-rollseyes suit on.

If MS are going to aggressively push Kinect for PC gaming you can bet that other developers will follow.

About damn time. I have a Track IR 3 with TrackClip Pro which I VERY rarely use because it's such a hassle to put it all together just for a quick flight (not to mention the extra wire from the track clip pro and the headphones and of course the damn thing can barely clip on the headphones band because it's not thin enough).

Big difference is that Kinect samples at 30hz while TIR5 is 120hz

You can see a definite lag from the head movement to it reacting on screen.

You need look no further than FORZA/GT5 to see that Kinect sucks at head tracking.

Because, GT5 is on the PS3. Which uses Kinect.

Knowing what you're talking about generally helps.

STT Radar issue is leftover code.

Wait for the PC version! Will be more responsive and definitely will work above 30 Hz . Requirements deffer on PC than console. I know will include efferent Hardware.

How do you conclude that it is laggish. Have you seen the configuration settings this man uses?

In TIR5 you improve smoothness at the cost of responsiveness also.

I mean, no big mouth, just wait to see.

The PS3 Eye-toy already supports 60hz at a PC - and I hope that they will use a similar fast camera in the Kinect for PC.

And together with the ability to use it in a distance of 40cm it will be fast enough to deliver smooth tracking.

Please don't judge on these kind of vids.

I think the video showing facial movement shows how good the system can be. I have a Kinect for my XBOX 360 and it can be laggy in certain conditions but I wonder how much is down to what system resources the Kinect is allowed to use as to make the device cheaper Microsoft stripped out some of the onboard processing and used the 360's resources. The one problem I see is that so many games support TrackIR and they have been very protective of their technology and not shared it so would Kinect be able to provide any backwards compatibility for TrackIR enhanced games? If not I'd have to keep two devices hooked up for older sims which would only have TeackIR support.

Will be interesting to see kenect working with DCS,

I use facetracknoir with a ps3 eye toy @ 60hz

and sure there is a slight delay with the ps3 eyetoy but I soon got used to this and it works well with my setup.
