ED Team JimMack Posted April 29, 2012 ED Team Posted April 29, 2012 When the P51D is released, for those who have only experienced flying jets, you are going to be surprised at the torque effect of a propeller! To avoid initial tears of frustration, I strongly advise that you set auto-rudder, and take off assistance mode. As you gain experience, you can unclick these options. Ideally you will have a set of pedals. If you are using a HOTAS to control rudder, careful set-up is required. Having problems? Rusty_M Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 In other sims, he never leaves me alone. Maybe I will like this. Please include a ground-loop avoidance tutorial. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
leafer Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 teh. seriously though, what causes ground loop? And is it an issue during take off or landing. I remember reading some plane has tendency to ground loop on landing. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
159th_Viper Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 In other sims, he never leaves me alone. Maybe I will like this. Please include a ground-loop avoidance tutorial. Jesting aside, it's not that bad. We as testers were given the introductory build and told to have a wee blast for a day or so before knuckling down to work. For me personally it was a disaster: That Lady kicked my A$$ six ways from Sunday - repeatedly! However, once I got to understand the principles involved it all slotted into place. Members already have the manual - A cursory read and a cool hand will keep you right and out of trouble. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? ED Team JimMack Posted April 29, 2012 ED Team Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) For those with real life flying experience, of say a Cessna 172, you have horespower of 160 hp. Torque is not a big factor to worry about. The P51D has a horsepower @3000 rpm of 1490 hp, and at WEP (war emergency power) of 17,200 hp. Most of the thrust moves you forward, but some moves you to the left (for Merlin engines - opposite for Griffon Spits). Edited April 29, 2012 by JimMack Having problems? 159th_Viper Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 teh. seriously though, what causes ground loop? Basically the same thing that causes a car to spin out. Difference is that you are in a Mustang as opposed to a Bugati. Vitally important to keep the plane aligned during the take-off run. As such you are dancing on the rudders with the finesse of a Bolshoi Ballerina as opposed to a Hamfisted Troll. Now just to compound your problems you are strapped to a massive engine that, given half the chance, will pick you up and slam you down with the express intent to maim and kill you (read torque) which requires even more rudder finesse as the take-off roll parameters change from second to second, requiring constant adjustments. And is it an issue during take off or landing. I remember reading some plane has tendency to ground loop on landing. Torque-induced ground-loop more a factor during take-off. Can however also occur during landing (more traditional spinout). Difference is that takeoff groundloop usually hurts a lot more than a landing groundloop. Landing however does have it's own problems, especially when coupled with a full fuselage tank - that will get you killed quicker than a blowfish, but that's another story. Yurgon Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Please guys, with sugar on top, could you include some kind of version number or release date in the manual? That request aside, thanks a lot to ED for releasing the manual, looks fantastic!
sobek Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) teh. seriously though, what causes ground loop? And is it an issue during take off or landing. I remember reading some plane has tendency to ground loop on landing. As has been stated, there are several effects at work. The first is that it's a tail dragger, that means that the center of gravity is behind the main wheels, which makes it inherently unstable. If you enter a sharp turn, a taildragger has the tendency to sharpen the turn all by itself, so there is a certain "point of no return", once your turn radius is too small, you can give as much opposite rudder as you want, the plane is still going to sharpen the turn. This makes it of the uttermost importance that you pay all your attention to keeping her lined up. At higher speeds, even a gentle turn can end up in ground loop if you don't countersteer immediately. Second, P-Factor, that is, the tendency of the prop to produce more thrust on one side if the air moves through it at an angle (e.g. at ground attitude). P-Factor can absolutely ruin your day if you try to put the tail up too early. It kicks in at speeds where the rudder has very little authority still, so you musn't get the tail up too early to still enjoy the steering authority of the tail wheel. It is also tricky because it's very strong when the tail starts to rise, but as AoA decreases, so does P-Factor, so you must really dance on the rudder a lot to keep her lined up. The third is torque, that has already been mentioned. Edit: There's the gyro-effect, too, i forgot about that. The force of the gyro effect is dependant on prop RPM and angular speed.
