I hope rift will work with amd cards on the new engine.

You and I, both!

But I'd say it's highly likely!

Is AMD not playing ball or something? Genuine question, I had an AMD years go but moved over to the dark side where I'll be staying for the foreseeable future.

AMD is working very closely with Oculus, and Vive trying to develop their hardware and software to best suit the requirements of VR. Infact some aspects of the current AMD hardware/software tech is better suited to VR than NVidia's.

I'm not a fanboy of either gpu company and have always bought the one that best suits my needs. I'm still running a GTX580, and won't upgrade until I find out which new gpu hardware/software is better suited to the VR HMD hardware I decide to buy, in conjunction with the flight sim software that I want to run on it.

I've also waited until now to decide which smartphone upgrade to make. I wasn't interested in mobile VR, but now that the new GearVR headset has been announced at 99 dollars, and can use almost any Samsung Galaxy phone. The amount of content available is staggering. I may just have to get me one of those. :)

Samsung appears to have adopted the Oculus plan to sell their VR hardware near cost. Yes we still have to buy or have the required smartphones, but 99 dollars is an incredible price. They even gave free new GearVR's and Microsoft input devices to everyone at Connect 2. It will be interesting to see if HTC Vive can afford to follow suit.

AMD GPUs don't work in combination with the DK2 in the current DCS engine, but should be ok when EDGE is released.

Any news in implementing direct drive mode support for DCS with Oculus new software version v7?

No word yet. They may have tweaked their own implementation further or implemented the oculus runtime. The only draw back with .7 runtime is that any software using it may break with .8..... Oculus have said backward compatibility won't be assured until 1.0 due in December.

EDIT: As a result many publishers are shying away from oculus implementation until runtime 1.0 comes out. Asserto Corsa, Elite Dangerous etc

I am really looking forward to the open beta, and much applause to Wags and staff for their efforts. It looks like a ton of newness...and direct Oculus support...DX11...I'm sure it will put folks in a good mood when it comes out :)

Palmer Luckey Explains Why the Oculus Rift Will Cost “More than $350”

http://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-founder-palmer-luckey-explains-oculus-rift-cost-price-350/

I'm all for making the best possible VR headset, and don't mind paying more to get the best VR experience at this stage of VR's development, but hopefully they still plan to sell their hardware near cost. It was very interesting to hear that the displays will be even more technologically advanced than ones in the latest demoed headsets. The deals with Facebook, and Samsung are definitely paying off, considering the hundreds of custom parts, and specially built VR displays, that would never have happened without Facebook, and Samsung partnerships.

Good read, thanks for the article link.

I'm not surprised at all. It is just what I was expecting. I didn't regret buying DK1 or DK2 and what I experienced with those is worth far more than 350$.

I'm not a rich guy... far from it actually but I'll pay what ever they ask for it. And later when there will be as much choice of HMD's as it is now for CPU's, GPU's, controllers and other things we spend money on, i will always go for the premium consumer HMD on the market.

I'm in love with my DK2 and I use it for racing all the time. I've said good bye to the 3 screens setup and didn't look back.

I'm getting a crash to desktop when trying to run 1.5 with the DK2. Munu loads up fine but when I start the mission DCS just closes. I have the latest Nvidia drivers (355.98) installed and beta 0.7.0.0 for the Oculus runtime. =\

I got in once where it didnt crash. After my first flight without the rift on high settings and getting 140 FPS I had high hopes.

I have to say, my first flight in the rift had as much stuttering with head movement as before. I hope that there will be an improvement there, I cant play it as it is or my stomach will start to crawl up.

I got crashes when trying to get into flights. GUI looks nice and readable though...so thats good.

For those who had flights, were the dials much clearer to read? Was it a cool experience?

What jets did you fly? wonder if it only works with certain jets.

I managed one flight in the Huey between crashes. I can't get a mission to load at all in the rift now. Unfortunately I had forgotten to turn off Vsync so it was a juddery mess. Visuals were better than 1.2 but not a major change. I've posted my logs in the beta bug report section.

Still trying to get one flight in. I'll keep trying here and there. Was hoping to try to get some footage for the VR aviators FB page. At least it's a step in the right direction though....menu GUI shows they at least know we VR folks exists.

posted in the bugs thread but copied here for info...

OK, I changed the Vsync in the nvidia control panel to force it off as doing in game did nothing.

I also changed VR pre render frames from 1 to application controlled. I dont think this was the reason but next time I loaded DCS it all worked.. I thought I had stumbled on a solution but of course the next couple of times it crashed.

Anyway, the revelation. Vsync forced off as you were saying was silky smooth. I was saying that I wanted this to be like flyinside fsx which was the best flight simming in the rift to date.

DCS is better. Much better. it is silky, silky smooth. I put the frame rate counter on and I was at 150 fps in the rift.

Damn, when we get the crash gone this will be nice.

If anyone has found a work around for avoiding the crash in the DK2, I'd love to hear it. I heard a fresh re-boot helped some people. Unfortunately when I did get in the sim, it was before I heard about the VSync issue, so I had a very juddery experience.

Hi i have spent 6 hours restarting my pc after each flight, not restarting lol and it has worked 1/10 times which is frustrating. BUT

i have managed to fly the f15 and the mig29 a couple of times, in day and night and the dials are crisp. as are the mirrors.

The improvements i have noticed through the rift are:

  • the mirror reflection moves with you as you turn your head (the pilot in the mirror)
  • the flares, smoke-pods and missiles look amazingly real
  • all the dials are perfectly clear and readable
  • no judder or black lines ( for me anyway, my spec is in my sig)
  • cockpit shadows are perfect (no double shadow)
  • the reflections from staring direct at the sun are spot on, they look as if staring through a camera
  • the stars at night twinkle when you pan you head. its crazy

I also had vsync off using Med settings and got a solid 75fps

its totally worth the 400 attempts to get the one flight. :joystick:

I hope they fix the crashes with the Rift soon because a better Rift experience is what I was waiting for in 1.5 beta. This is whats happening when I crash. First of all I have to set every setting to low because I haven't managed to start a game when they are set to anything other then low. I crash all the time with higher settings, but I do randomly crash with low settings also. I crash when the mission starts to load and it is at this same point each time.

When I do crash on low setting, I just exit the game and turn the Rift off and then back on. This stops me from having to boot the PC up. I really hope they fix the crashes soon and don't just wait until the rift is out next year. I was so looking forward to 1.5 and using the Rift, but it's not very enjoyable with all these crashes.

So got it working today (with a lot of crashes in between) but made a video about my results:

I found that with instant action I can get the following modules to work about 80% of the time:

A-10C

SU-25t

UH-1

MI-8

I was able to get some of the other modules to work from a training mission I created in the past. I was able to do a little flying on the L-39 that was pretty fun.

The cockpits do look a lot better and much clearer (still not perfect, but a lot better then older version). I did have issues with the pilot position and even pressing num 5 didn't really help.

I'll try to get more footage this weekend and get more details.

Joebloggs you asked about .7 runtime in the crash reporting thread. Here is where it says it
