Hi Device,

Hi there, just discovered this thread about Oculus Rift, have a couple of questions.

I want to order the toy on Oculus website, but in the Agreement, it says the kit is for developer and not for consumer product, what does that mean?

That mean that the oculus developer kit 2 has as target group developers and not customers. So it have a lower resolution, a stronger pixle grid and perhapes less features than the final customer version

Another question is that I see a great number of videos on Youtube showing people using the toy, and notice that the screen on their monitor is divided into 2 view I presume they represent the left and right eyes, is that what I will see when wearing the Oculus ?

yes, but the optical quality will be in the oculus not so good like when you watching that videos on the screen, because you will also have pixlegrid, which means you can see with your eyes the pixles of the display.

Also, I wear spectacles, do I take off my glasses before putting on the Oculus, or the toy has space to accommodate my glasses as well?

from case to case different, depends how good your eyes are without glasses if you have luck you can use it without glasses, if you have no luck like me for example you must wear your glasses, but there is enough space for that.

Last one, I saw another video on Youtube that a chap playing DCS Huey with Oculus, he remarked that Oculus reduces the game resolution, I certainly wish that will not be the case with DCS World, cause the game is so beautiful at 1680/1050.

the oculus dk2 have a resolution of 960 x 1080 per eye. Perhapes the final consumer version will have a better display, which is to be very likely.

At the moment the oculus rift and dk 2 is just a gadget for normal consumers, which gives you a impression of the immersion which the final consumer product 'could' provide but not more.

So it's on you to decide if it's worth or better to wait ~6 - 12 months to get a final product with that you can play games very good.

i don't know how much shipping costs you have to pay, i live in germany and i have to pay 55USD shipping costs and 76.95 USD fees and taxes and end up with total costs of 481.95 USD

Thanks tobaschi for your reply.

Let me get this right, so Oculus Rift and Oculus DK2 are both prototype, they are not meant to be a finished product for general VR games consumer, is that correct?

I still do not understand about the two views, maybe I didn't ask the question well. I saw on the videos that when using the toy, there are 2 views representing the left and right eyes visions, that is those who are not wearing the toy see the game is divided into 2 visions. But what does the user who is wearing the Oculus Rift see?

This video shows 1 single view

Yes DK1 and DK2 are prototypes aimed mainly at developers so they can have games ready for when CV1 is released. It's handy as well for OR devs for consumers to get their hands on the early versions as it builds hype and gets some wider feedback. But I would assume developers are their main target group. A peripheral with no games that support it is useless after all. Personally I'm waiting until CV1 hits the market before buying. I don't think you'd want anything less than the resolution it'll have for flight sims at least.

As for the view a user sees when using the rift it's just one screen. The two screens are necessary to give the 3D effect which is what a third party sees on a monitor but the user just sees one combined screen.

Thanks for clearing my mind. So, I just stick to my TrackIR for the time being.

The developer has asked the general public not to buy the DK2 prototype as the consumer version will be better in every way. That said it hasn't stopped thousands in the general public, like myself, buying the prototype as the consumer version is atleast a year away. Best guess is a year and half away, the end of 2015. I'm sure I will enjoy more than a few hundred dollars worth of entertainment value with the prototype before I buy the consumer version.

I think the largest risk of buying a DK2 if you care to use it for a long time is that there may not be any long term commitment to it. From the day that CV1 is released the DK2 may not be compatible with the SDK's that are released.

You may be lumped with a unit that you thought you could use for longer as your backup or on a second pc. As we have found with new DK's there have been new SDK's that are not backwards compatible and I wouldn't have any expectation that when CV1 is released that any new software using the SDK's from that time forward will ever work on the DK2.

Posted

I would imagine most everyone that is buying the DK2 now, are fully aware of the prototypes longevity, and feature issues, and are planing to buy the consumer version on release as well. Some will sell their DK2 a few months before the CV1 release too recoup some of the cost.

Good news - 1.2.9 should introduce DK2 support and it is nearing release. Hopefully that means not much waiting around for those who are in the first batch of shipments. I hope I'm one of them!

On a side note DK1 owners may want to avoid the 1.2.9 update. If it is using a DK2 SDK then DK1 support may no longer work.

The SDK does not change current games and demos on your hard disk.

That's not what I meant. If you update DCS to DK2 compatability (1.2.9) then the DK1 may not work in game anymore as DCS will be using the newer SDK. I wasn't t referring to existing DK1 games and demos.

I researched it further and it seems DK1 will still work with software compiled for DK2 (just without DK2 exclusive features). The reason I flagged it as a possible issue is that 1.2.9 will likely be available before many of us have our DK2. Anyway it seems to be a non issue so disregard.

Just curious, while i wait for my dk2 i decided to run dcs on stereo mode with my 1080p display to see the potential impact of fps as compared to normal 1080p. It is significant. I see about 20 fps drop. I really hope EDGE helps improve fps, if not I may have to upgrade my 680 GTX :-/

Turn off the mirrors, these tend to be performance killers, especially in stereo. Also turning off HDR could help.

People are just starting to receive emails saying their DK2 orders are being processed and a tracking number will be emailed when shipped. So its started.

Just received an update to my DK2 Pre Order.

Date: Mar 19, 2014 08:34 AM PDT

Status: PROCESSING:

Your order has been checked out for shipping and will be shipped in the next batch. We'll send you a notification once it's shipped.

Note: If you have multiple items in the order, it might also indicate that the remaining items are still waiting to be shipped.

It's starting. :) Now not too sure if I will get one with the first batch or the next one as the description above doesn't say, but I don't think it will be long now. Just hope my PC will be able to run DCS good enough with it.

Just in time for the Sabre and Dora as well. :)

First Day of pre order. March 19th at 08:34.

Sorry to hear yours have been suspended. Fingers crossed that gets sorted out soon, otherwise I'm guessing it may have a effect on DK2 integration with DCS. Isn't the studio based in Russia?? Would hate ED, not to be able to get their hands on a DK2.

I'm fairly sure they already have them. They've stated they were testing DK2 integration in 1.2.9. I posted the link a few days ago.
