Whats with the BS2 update requires BS1 installed and activated?

Am I going to get this everytime?

I had a rant about that too. I was tired and pissed off at the time, but yes it is quite annoying.

Here is a different question tho, After uninstalling i'm left with any folders which have modified files in (custom liveries, a few LOD fixes and zzzspace's sound mod) is there any reason i cant stick these back in after the new version is installed? will i even need the LOD fixes?

Hi, what are your system specs please? Maybe the FPS problem is just nVidia related?

Oh, duh, sorry - I was even thinking I had to post those before I started writing:

Win7 64x

AMD Phenom II x6 @3.8GHz

GTX 570 OC'd to 988/1970

16GB DDR2 @500(ish)

Resolution at 1920x1080, MFDs at 256, everything else at maximum except the AA, which was just on 2x, and I was getting about 50~60fps above 2000ft, and about 30~40 below.

Mitigating factors: MaxFPS set to 60 in graphics.cfg, episode of The Colbert Report on other monitor, and it's a "custom" machine Ship-of-Theseus'd together from an old HP Pavillion.

I might turn off the tree shadows, though, since outside the AA that seems to have the biggest effect on frames and I haven't tested anything really over-the-top yet, though even the CBU-87 impacts are less choppy than they were before (~10fps instead of 2~3). Something about the smoke on the new explosions seems a little toy-like again, though...

For when it goes wrong: Win10x64, GTX1080, Intel i7 @3.5 GHz, 32GB DDR3, Warthog HOTAS, Saitek combat rudder pedals, TrackIR 5 / Vive Pro, a case of Pabst, The Funk

Thank you Frogisis. I'll try to work out what is causing the FPS drop tonight changing various settings...

I uninstalled 1.2.0 before installing 1.2.1 and it's asking me to waste an activation as well. I've already used a few as I have two Win7 and one XP partitions which I've been testing in, so I don't want to waste one unnecessarily.

I don't understand why it's asking, as my licence details are still in the registry and besides it says in the first post that "A new activation will not be required unless this is the first time you have installed the product" so can someone fix this please?

I have 1.2.1.5970 - just installed world and it already had an auto-update to apply. Is anyone else running a different version?

no its looking for the update server and verify..

Now I want to know if we should still must to deactivate all modules and uninstall v.1.2.0 then install version 1.2.1 (in order to preserve activation), and whether the removal of perceived errors (bugs) will go through AutoUpdater or we need to wait for a new version (eg 1.2.2)?

Auto Update???

Whenever ED updates DCS World or it's modules I burn the updates to a DVD(s) after I'm sure they installed correctly.

With auto update is there a way to back up each update?

I realize that this might save a great deal of time and effort. Does that mean the there will now longer be total program updates that can be backed up on one's computer, harddrive or USB drive?

Regarding the issue of activation:

I've noticed in v 1.2.0 that every so often (every 5th? connection to the master server) the activation window pops up for one of the modules I have. As they are all already activated I just hit cancel (or exit?) and everything works fine.

I wonder if this is the same thing for v 1.2.1. Has anyone just cancelled the activation step to see if it works anyway?

Anti-aliasing makes FPS drop!!!

Regarding the FPS problem, the cause is indeed in anti-aliasing!

I did a lot of testing in the past days (on 1.2.0) with MSI Afterburner and CPU monitoring tools always opened on my 2nd monitor while trying to overclock my i7 2600K and 680GTX at their top and I created some benchmarking situations to get a hang on the performance I was getting while OCing.

Today, in the same situations, my GPU was always working at 97-98% (even in outside views) when before updating it used to run at 70-80%. Selectively deactivating the features in my nVidia control panel I finally got back to the old FPS with anti-aliasing set to OFF.

Probably something was changed to the AA handling in the code and is now uselessly overloading the GPU, where before it made a 1-2% difference going from no AA to 16xQ CSAA now puts a 20-30% stress on the GPU.

I hope the guys at Eagle Dynamics are aware of this and will provide a patch soon. Now the only option is flying with AA at 2X or 4X to get the minimum impact on FPS...

My system is:

- ASUS Sabertooth Z77

- i7 2600K OC @ 4.8GHz

- 16GB RAM 1600MHz

- PNY nVidia GTX680 2GB VRAM

- Samsung SSD 256GB

Before updating I had 60-80 FPS average in the first A-10 instant action mission, after update it's 30-40 FPS...

I have a nvidia gtx 580, no problems so far. I'm running at 1080 with every ingame setting maxed with mirrors enabled (something that would slow me down to a crawl before).

No, I tried that and clicking exit brings the activation window up once more and clicking exit again then tries to load BS2 but after waiting the usual length of time for it to finish loading, it then obviously realises it's not activated and quits, starts to reload the GUI and then crashes with a message that DCS has stopped working.

Anti-Aliasing setting?

I'm at work but I believe it's set at 32x or 16x (in nvidia control panel) i'll look when i get home.

I do remember that I went into control panel and set everything towards quality vs speed.

I see Wags has edited the first post to say "Note: Deactivate your products!" although it still says "Note: A new activation will not be required unless this is the first time you have installed the product."

So ED: Are you going to credit me an activation to make up for the one lost by following the original bad instructions?

I assure you the situation is most definitely not being ignored.

DCS 1.2.1 Update - 2 October 2012

The team is reading the feedback and is actively taking steps to remedy the problems identified in 1.2.1 to include:

1- Reimbursing used activations when updating to 1.2.1.

2- Addressing continued issues with the master server.

3- Migrating several fixes in the internal versions to the auto updater.

4- Providing a change log to the Auto Updater dialog window.

5- Providing solutions to frame rate issues that some users are having.

The team is working hard on these and we hope to have this issues resolved as soon as possible.

Thanks

Even with all the problems I am having with FPS and effects.dll I would like to thank Wags and his team for the auto update feature and the quick customer feedback.

It is very encouraging.
