Finally! A simulator that will model WW2 aircraft systems properly.

Maybe be Oleg will make a comeback ;)

Not a dig at anyone but I love WWII era fighters and would like them made with ED team's standards and not Oleg's standards if you know what I mean.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

+1

my opinion as well.whoever this partner is, ED better keeps their level of detail and passion for realism, cause thats where they really kick ass.

I agree Oleg's creation may not have been up to the standard of detail as DCS but there is no question he did produce a very successful product by flight simulator standards and I'm sure he would add value to DCS even as a consultant.

I started flying IL-2 when Forgotten Battles came out, I've flown a little LOMAC (not much of a modern jet fan) and various FSX WW2 Plane add ons (Accusims P-47 + Classic Hangers FW-190). I've always wanted a sim that had FSX flight systems / LOMAC fidelity but in a WW2 setting ... it's finally starting to take shape with DCS and I'm one happy simmer right now.

Even if it was him, what makes you think they would lower the quality of their product based on one person? That's just silly... IL2 had a lot of things going for it for the WWII era.... now imagine the quality of ED's planes living there...

Awesome stuff mates... You did it, and I'm very happy about "official" announcement for WWII development path on DCSW :thumbup:.

Just to complain about anything, so somebody named WWII sims fans ...

i do not think so (maybe with cockpits)

they already have the perfect, animated external 3D model in max , so they "only" need to save/export as EDM extension

of course they must know each arg number meaning

I've a bit of work for them. Pics are beautiful and I guess you know yet but that engine cowling shape is not correct. Who I want to fool, I buy it anyway , but hope final DCS module would be completely accurate like P-51 is also in that details (except double aerial for WWII aircraft).

As far as I know, Oleg and his team made the most successful ww2 flightsim to date (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

I think it's fair to say most people who are getting started with flight simming start out with relatively low realism settings all around, otherwise the learning curve is just too steep.

With that in mind, I think it would be a very good idea for ED or partners to release some lock on-style collection of medium fidelity ww2 birds. For the beginners it would provide an easy and compelling way in, and for the rest of us it would serve to populate our WW2 missions with time appropriate AI planes.

Well you're right but misunderstanding something, successful because we hadn't anything more during 10 years doesn't means well done or realistic like it was sold to us for many time, and I fly Il-2 from v1.0 and still do. During this time I had my pilot licence and now I can see how far Il-2 is from realism while Oleg always said it was "the most realistic thing you can do in a PC", but that's bullshit, he knew it was bullshit, and still said that. DCS is the probe something much more realistic can be done, and not now, it could be done many years ago but Oleg never had intention of it. Now with my experience, and my RL experience "I can see" what happens and that's why although still flying it because we have no substitute yet but a single P-51 I'm very disappointed with Il-2, Oleg, and all the lies said during many years. DCS way is the future and no more.

Don't know about others, what I know is I fly sims from 25 years ago in my childhood and always started flying a new sim with full realism set. But believe me, after my licence I can tell you don't want a "light sim" until learn and then a hardcore, the best thing you can do is learn directly what you'll fly, and if it's "the real thing" like P-51 is better. Of course like in RL, an easier trainer aircraft would be even better, you know start flying a small biplane Tiger Moth like or at least a T-6 one, and then others. But light sim what means "light reality" is not a good idea.

Why?

Every DCS module to date already caters for everyone, from chimpanzees to uber-realistic virtuosos. Game mode vs Simulation mode and a myriad of assists ensure a Sim that is scaleable to suit all preferences.

I think pretty much every flight simulator I've seen has at some point marketed itself as "as realistic as it gets" or similar, not that I'm defending the practice.

I don't think it's entirely fair to say that il-2s success is due to there not being any competition, because even if the market was stale for a while, at the time of il-2's release there were other ww2 sims. None of them managed to garner the community support and the continuous sales to match the il-2 series though, so they had to have done something right. :)

You're probably right that it's better to learn from a high fidelity sim from the start, but I think a lot of people don't have the time or patience for that straight away. They have to be eased in through a more casual-friendly, entry level product. Take the Lock On series, for example; I bet many of the guys that are now confidently slewing their TGP around creating markpoints east and west and transmitting them to various wingmen over SADL while hacking the G-suit port to power their coffee makers, once took their first stumbling steps in a "RShift+Home-to-start" Lock On aircraft. I'm sure many of them would've come around to DCS anyway, but all of them? I doubt it :)

Because it opens up DCS World to a wider market and that means bigger community, more mods and more importantly, more money in ED's coffers to produce the high fidelity sims that we love :)

While it's true you can play ka-50 and the other mods in game mode, I don't think they're very fun products in that mode. I think we need some products to entice the "press 'i' to start engine"-crowd (I was one of those guys for a long time so don't think I'm hating on them - They are people too!) to come over to DCS, just like FC3 for example. People that stick with it will likely migrate over to the high fidelity models in time, and we'd all be better off for it.

EDIT: And just to clarify, I do absolutely not mean that such entry level products should be developed at the cost of longer development times for high fidelity products! I'm bitten by the high fi bug and can't go back, but if ED can reach out to a bigger market (I'd love to see the civilian ac crowd start to populate our skies, for example), either through own effort or through 3rd parties, then I'm very much for it. That's all. :)

I am confused, there are many options with the P-51D (for example) to make it easier to start and fly, why not have a module with both options instead of releasing it with just the easy mode?

Yes, but the fact that the A-10C module also has similar optional realism and difficulty settings doesn't make FC3 obsolete.

And of course I agree the best thing is to have both options in one module, but fleshing out a DCS P-51D-level module may not even be feasible for a lot of aircraft, not to mention for a lot of 3rd party developers.

I dont see any future plans for ED to develop FC3 level aircraft, of course we dont know anything about the modules they have hinted at, but I would have to guess they wouldnt be FC3 fidelity... I think the future lies in what we get right now, high fidelity aircraft with options to make them accessible by many.

As for aircraft without readily available data for high fidelity, well then we probably wont see those from ED, again only my opinion.

Oh I don't know. Could it be that I read that forum from time to time and formed a conclusion that Oleg is either stubborn or egomaniac? I'm sure this isn't new to anyone, right?

Well then its probably not him if that's the case ;) But also I doubt I would base my opinion on someone with their interaction on the IL2 forums, a lot of people ended up looking pretty bad there :)
