Its 2013 ... Really!!! Is that all???? DCS Performance

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

i got to say, i am a little bit disappointed and frustrated. I got a little time off and came to re install the good old DCS A-10, now as a DCS World Modul, on my new gaming rig.

I recently only played short games such as Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 and i was very enthusiastic to see the performance gain in DCS.

And then......bang!!! :joystick: Nothing. Nothing has changed..... I am still happy to see those steady 30 FPS during an attack flight with multiple planes / targets etc. I thought a stable 45 - 50 fps should be no problem by now......

How can that be? What am i doing wrong? Can you guys help me out? :helpsmilie:

My Game Settings:

- 1920 x 1080

- everything maxed out (no mirrors)

- MDF resolution 1024

- 4x MSAA

- low CIV traffic

- no changes over GPU driver whatsoever

My Rig:

- CPU: Intel 3570K @ 4.5 Ghz

- GPU: EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2GB - OCed to 1280 Mhz Boost Clock

- Samsung 830 Pro SSD

- Win 7 64 bit

- all the latest Updates and Nvida drivers (no beta)

It would be great if you could give me some good advice....

Thx for your help! :smartass::thumbup:

It is still basically the same product it has always been. Aside from some individual effect issues, I don't think anything has changed that would significantly improve overall performance since the A-10 was released.

I love FarCry3 but the draw distance is pitiful there.

Haven't seen Crysis3, but sure it's the same.

You can't have flightsim-level draw distances with FPS-style quality. And most probably will never have.

I have not been very active in the DCS world since, but is ED aware of "the challenge" and are they doing something against it or will all the future DCS Modules be based on the same engine and therefor suffer from the same performance issues?

I am asking you, ´cos you seem to be a veteran here.... :-)

No advice... just bow to the harsh truth...

Hardware ain't gonna give perfortmance to DCS...

...only DCS will improve performance of DCS...

Dude, I have a Core i5 clocked to 4,4GHz, 16GB ram and a GTX660...

...I usually balance the GPU at 97-98% load with graphics options and my 4 CPU cores never seem to jump over 30%...

Code optimization and "to the metal" programming is a thing of the past with these new programmer kids... they just throw it at your rig as they compile it...

Hi,

i am not asking for an FPS style. I love the look of the DCS titles. To me they really look fantastic. I just want them to be a bit smoother....

Since there is no fancy "dx11 tesselation super smaa pixel shader downsampling" magic goin on i just dont know what is pulling the FPS down...:(

No point moaning about it, that's the way it is, and until we see EDGE nothing will change. ( :P )

I cant see ED optimizing a out going graphics engine when we could have EDGE sometime in the next 5 years :P

We just have to carry on and make the best of it.

I kinda agree with you.. i get a FSX feeling performance wise... without the microstutters..

i have 8core a 4ghz

16gb 2400mhz RAM

2x 680SLI in single performance mode

120gb 550/500 OS ssd disk

512gb 550/500 Game disk

and im at about 30 fps on average at cruise.. all shadows are off.. same with water 0m clutter, rest is maxxed out when combat hits the fan i can drop to 10-15fps

Should have been able to max it all out and still have a decent amount of frames

Then it's possibly time that you show us your outstanding programming and compiling skills, buddy.

A comment like this is neither useful nor is it fair.

I don't like it. To say the least.

@Nume Noctre

Yes it's still quite a heavy load for even decent systems - but we all hope for the new 'edge' sim engine ;)

[EDIT] booohooo... while I wrote this half a dozen other buddies mentioned the new 'edge' engine... lol

Hey TeeJay82,

if a had your system and if i knew how much cash i had to burn for it, i would be a very yery sad man. It seems as Aries said "bow to the harsh truth"....

The current engine is old, they know that, that is why they are working on EDGE, to be honest my system isnt half of what yours is but I get similar performance as you state. Its not optimized well enough for all the new hardware out there... lets see what EDGE brings us.

My programming skills... hm... in the best of my days, I edited Battle Isle maps in hex code without a map editor by reverse engineering every hex value in a map file... no, don't have no programming skills... dude, I would have a much more powerfull rig if I had such skillz, ya know... :D

Too bad this forum has no facebook little thumbs up/down for you to dislike my post...

We've been chasing frame-count since I started here in 2006........I remember the massive hype and excitement when dual-core was announced :megalol:

Bottom-Line is: Forget about the framerate counter. If you have smooth play why should the framerate matter?

As others have mentioned, EDGE is coming someday and it will, hopefully, bring many improvements. Until then, we wait. :)

Hi,

i would totally forget about the FPS number, but as the FPS goes down to 30 or even dips below it to 26-27 fps it will impact the whole gaming experience.

At 27 fps it feels like controller input goes down as well, the plane feels heavy and the TGP is pretty hard to control....

And thats pretty sad....
