Mattressi Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 PS: If DCS or someone else will ever produce a Me-109, I would expect an english cockpit too. German would be no problem for me at all :D, but I doubt that most DCS user an english version of the cockpit would be much easier to understand. And even thinking of a japanese Zero will give me headaches. ;) I, as an English-only speaker, find it quite easy to work with German, French and Italian cockpits, with not a single word in English. They often have words which sound similar or which, if you know a handful of military/aviation words in those languages, you can discern. Worst comes to worst, I can look them up. However, Russian cockpits just don't work for me. I'm glad that BST are planning an English version, but I'd love to learn the aircraft with the Russian cockpit. I just don't know how - the letters used don't relate to English/French/German/etc characters, so I don't know how to approach it. Are there any English speakers out there who don't know Russian, but have learnt how to fly the Ka-50, Su-25, or similar, in Russian? Is there a trick to it? Like, if I can just learn the Russian letters, I might be able to use the cockpit as well as I can with other foreign-language pits? Or is the only way to simply either learn Russian or memorise each label/switch? It's such a different language to Western European languages, that I'm not sure whether there's much I can do to "get by", rather than learn the whole language.
Skulleader Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Hello, I have a question for zaelu, please can you tell me where from these screenshots ? From one flight manual ? If it's the case can you tell me where I can found this manual (buy or downloaded) ? A great thanks in advance for all. Native Swedish speaker but my English is not bad. I find that even if the cockpit has labels in English I still do not read the labels because I already know what function a specific switch has. There's only this threshold in the beginning of learning what switch has what function and then the tooltip and manual is sufficient. It did not take long to get used to the Mi-8 cockpit, if there's something I want to do I mostly already know where that switch is. Probably same in reality, I don't imagine pilots/crew in the real thing are reading labels all the time. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Probably same in reality, I don't imagine pilots/crew in the real thing are reading labels all the time. That's a good point. I've only tried learning a Russian aircraft with the Su-25 (the free one in DCS World), but I found it difficult to use the Shkval (is that the right word?) system, because it was all just foreign letters to me. There were no tooltips to tell me what I'd done when I used the Shkval, so it just seemed to be changing from one collection of strange symbols to another. Perhaps with the tooltips over the switches (and no Shkval to give me problems), the Mi-8 will be easier to memorise. I might still wait for an English cockpit to come out before I buy it - just in case I can't work out the Russian at all. Also, your English isn't just "not bad" - it is excellent!

During normal flight with the main hydraulics on, the MAIN SYS ON light is on (it's green). If your main system fails or is turned off or for whatever reason the auxiliary system is providing pressure, the the AUX SYS ON light is on (it's red). It's red because it means there is a failure of the main system..in other words, flying in the auxiliary system is an emergency, not normal. You lose the autopilot when you lose the main system.

Thank you. This will explain a few things. And yes, Autopilot was of after the hits - all channels. It seems that russian engineers think quite different. I would lit a red signal when something is defect, not when a non defective backup system is working. DCS:A-10C / DCS:Ka-50 / DCS:UH-1H / DCS:Mig21bis / DCS:P-51D / DCS:Mi-8MTV2 / DCS:Fw190D9 / DCS:Bf109K4 / DCS:C-101EB / DCS:L-39C / DCS:F-5E / DCS:Spitfire LF Mk. =Mac= Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I was all set to yell and scream for an English version cockpit but I've changed my mind. Yes, it is Russian equipment so it should stay "high fidelity" in its ultimate form. That said, I would ask that a "cheat" be instituted that brain dead pilots like me can use to see things in English. One of the major reasons I don't fly my Ka-50 is because of the cockpit. I CAN fly it, but I'm not that good at fighting with it because I don't have the pit etched in my mind. Yes, this is a Beta release so I am perfectly happy letting Belsimtek work out the kinks. You should have seen me trying to land the P-51D when that came out in Beta! But I struggled and got it.... sort of.... Today, if I don't fly the Mustang, I have troubles landing still! But I am so very happy with it. I don't mind waiting for Belsimtek to get it right. The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

But we flight simmers have to choose from quite a few different models and we only fly in our spare time. Even if I got the switches in about one or two hours; if I wont fly the bird for a week or two (and this will happen), then it's hard to find the correct ones in time. If they are labeld in english it's not that difficult. BTW: Most (but not all and thats my point) of the switches are on my HOTAS and external (english labeled) keyboard. So I do not use the switches in the cockpit most of the time. And those switches I use are of minor importance and not very often used anyway. But even then I have to visually check their position sometimes. And I dont like to get puzzled by some strange language. tooltips are not very helpful, because I would have to use the mouse and thats way to slow. But we get an english cockpit allready and until then I can live with cyrillic letters. TurboHog Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I also started working on the textures. But I think I'll just wait for the official English pit. I use the Trebuchet MS font as I found it very similar to what I found in the Mi-17 manual. 'Frett'

If you mainly use the switches to quickly check their position then I can absolutely understand why English labels would be easier. Personally, I only map stick functions (e.g. weapon release, trimmer, wheel/parking brake) to my stick aside from the flare dispenser red button in the Mi-8 (because there is no pilot-navigator to do it for me) so for everything else I flick switches. This way I learn them fast and have to remember where they are. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
howie87 Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 Any progress on the English cockpit? Just bought the Mi-8 and I'm seriously confused!
AlphaOneSix Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 There is a mod for an English cockpit. BST/ED have not released one yet, and it is unknown if they even plan to.
cichlidfan Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 ...and it is unknown if they even plan to. Well, actually... We've decided to do an English-labeled cockpit. In the meanwhile, there's a community mod already in progress. esb77 Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 It already is partly labeled in English, Autopilot, generator, radio, and some others as well I think. :smilewink: I think it helps if you've had enough advanced math/physics/engineering classes to have been forced to learn a lot of the Greek alphabet. A lot of the 'oddness' of the Cyrillic alphabet to native readers of Latin alphabets is simply substitution of Greek letters for their Latin equivalents. Callsign "Auger". It could mean to predict the future or a tool for boring large holes. I combine the two by predictably boring large holes in the ground with my plane.
