MI8 - what's the verdict ?

Lots of switches, overhead panels and three pilot positions make a very nice cockpit but harder start up.

The cockpit feels like a "us and them" (aircrew and grunts) type transport rather than the cosy "we're in it together" Huey. I find it harder to fly and keep getting caught out by the vortex ring state (VRS). I will put some time into it later as I'm working through the other modules but it'll make a nice place holder/trainer until there's a Mi-24 or similar

the startup is very easy

just start the training tutorial and fly it a 2-3 times untill you realize what and where the buttons

What skouras says it true. The startup is easy, even though some that has not bought the Mi-8 complain that pit is in Russian. It's not a problem. It's easy and takes less time to learn than the KA-50 and A-10C.

The Training tutorial in Mi-8 gets you started.

Use this one from youtube also:

Well, if you master Huey, I think you can fly pretty much anything ;) I think it's easier, since there are some flying aids like few autopilot channels and stuff, but it requires a bit more attention in certain parts of flying, since Mi-8 is a lot heavier and has more inertia than Huey.

IMHO it is a lot easier to fly than the Huey. Not so much uncommanded movement, etc.

Interesting . With the Huey I felt it was very 'light' - not much feeling of intertia.

I was hoping with the Mi8 because its bigger that it might have that felling of inertia more.

It's also related to the head geometry ...

The fully articulated rotor of the Mi-8, with it's 5 thin blades compared to the two bladed semi rigid teetering rotor with wide chord blades of the Huey realy define their own flight behaviors, there is not only the weight and SAS

Hueyman I read you're about to be a heli pilot - congratulations on that. Do you think they got the mi-8 'right" and the Huey ??

Congrats Belsimtek, i like the flight model and its unique feel flying it, i flew in Indian MI-17's in Sudan a few years ago, and also some Russian Crewed MI-17's, and the sim certainly has the feel of them. Once again well done on a great sim, i am looking forward to seeing both the Huey and MI-8 out of Beta.

Regards

For me the day that I've learn that Belsimtek working on the new module named "Mi-8" in the same time that the Huey I said to myself that never I will bought because what can do with this big copter, do the combat ?

But day after day, after have seen the screenshot WIP, after the video of startup, I'm fall in love of the Mi-8 and for be honest since I bought the Mi-8 I use only this module, this copter is awesome.

The model 3D is perfect, the flight model is incredible, the sounds great, so I'm under the spell.

Is it true that I spend my time to say that the Mi-8 is an incredible module but it's true, the Mi-8 is an Open Beta but is perfect for me...

Since I've discovered this copter and it's impossible to spend one day without fly with this copter, it's my new drug.

So I would like say to the Belsimtek team just this word: CONGRATULATION !!!

When the Mi-8 will be no more in Beta it's will be a great day.

Bye Skull.

Same feeling here, on ground effect the Huey is just sliding like a soap, of course you can master it, but no feeling of weight or inertia...

Mi-8 is very nice with this feeling, i love to pilot here !

Yes W1ndy I'm ( if all goes well ) about to be, thanks !

But I have no pretention to say if it's right or not ( I bought it but as I'm waiting for my graphic card to come back from the repair shop, I didn't flew it yet )

But the Huey feels truly awesome yeah ! All side effects from such a helicopter are presents ... side thrust of tail rotor, roll moment due to the tail rotor offset ( in respect of roll axis, the tail rotor isn't ON that axis, but higher, due to the tail fin, making the whole chopper roll right a little bit for example when applying left pedal and vice versa ). And I'm sure the Mi-8 will do the job perfectly also !

The only thing I can criticize about Huey is what I described on the dedicated " Mast Orientation " thread.... really nothing more :smartass:

@A16 :

Okay but the Mi-8 is larger than the Huey isn't it ? so, considering the blade chords are even only 1cm less, as the ship is larger ... it looks like thin blades... like the Hughes 500D 5 blade rotor system, which as also very thin blades... like the Hughes 300 etc etc ... I'm not an aeronautic engineer at all, but I realised a while ago that generally, the more blade, the thinner ... ( in respect of global rotor size of course )

Take the Bell 214 ... then the Hughes 500

I expect that, once finished, the Mi-8 will be a superior product to the Huey. One thing worth noting is that the collision model is much more stable in the Mi-8 - you will not sink into the ground when crash landing or rolling over, and there is proper water landing/crashing dynamics. You also won't explode very easily, which is good.

On the down side, I believe the model for damage inflicted by weapons is still very much a work in progress. I've taken 4 hits from an Igla and continued flying, and on another occasion witnessed an Mi-8 in an online match continue flying for 10 minutes while completely engulfed in flames.

i flew a few hours now... what i have are some small problems with the AP... but its more on my side, not an issue on the side of Belsimtek i think ;)

What i miss, generally, is that there is no damage model on the Engines... (Hot Start, high TOT in high altitudes, over torque etc...)

Not yet, it will come. I'm pretty sure of it.

So far the module is pretty awesome, just a couple small things missing;

Cockpit Cooling Fan

Main Rotor Rotating Scissor (the part you hear going wish wish wish wish but can't see.)

And ofcourse things that were already announced to be still very much a work in progress, like the damage model.

I am so impressed with the fidelity of the DCS World that you can 'feel' the difference between the three helicopters in the simulation. The Mil 8 is another high fidelity product and I enjoy the challenge of flying it.

I am really looking forward to the campaign and the future improvements

Why is ED lagging behind with all the bugs and stability issues!!! Get stability problems solved so we can start use this models as intended, in dynamic multiplayer campaigns. Where we can have human CA generals, choppers, fighters and bombers feel that they are changing the outcome of the battlefield. We are waiting patiently for ED to solve the stability problems so we can have at least 15vs15 people in a server using different models and doing different tasks without server crashing. SP grows old pretty fast if you have experienced dynamic multiplayer campaigns. At the moment DCS is not stable enough for the community to arrange such events:(

By the way. UH-1 and Mi-8 are great models, Belsimtek should be proud!!!

I never believed I would enjoy to fly M-8 that much, Its like those old cars with soft suspension.

I think like you about the Mi-8 and the Huey, I've spent many hours with the Huey but since I have the Mi-8 I spend all my time with this awesome copter and off course with the Mod of our friend and artist Devrim, this module is incredible...

Now I hope that one artist will be created one Mod with the dust and scratches here and there on the glass in cockpit like this Mod for the Huey: Uh-1H Scratches mod. V3. Hi-res.

I think that the glass is too clean and invisible, some dust and scratches is perfect for your Mi-8, no ?

Bye Skull.
