I dont think its ready for release yet. So waiting is the first step.

 

By ready, I assume you mean release details are not yet figured out between RRG and ED, not that the tools don't exist. I appreciate that you chimed in, but would be much more interested in a more concrete clarification from RRG as to what they have planned for EDGE SDK release. Your reply deflects my question, doesn't answer it.

By ready, the public release for the SDK is probably not ready and/or put together. Least from what I have seen from everything available that is what I can tell... remember, EDGE itself isnt out yet, and we were told the SDK would come after release of EDGE way back when... I dont know if that has changed....

I'm pretty sure they mentioned they aim to get them out within a month of the Kickstarter ending. There are probably some legal things that need to be addressed and maybe some basic documentation so people don't get scared away instantly or spend lots of time working on something that can not work yet.

That clarifies things a bit. Would be interested in RRG validating that premise though. I'm wanting to jump in and start working in the SDK soon so I can start organizing a terrain project I have in mind with a few people I know.

My main curiosity is if I can make use of public domain DEM height data and GeoTIFF tiles as a template to work up new original terrain? If not, what are the baseline source import formats?

What's going on with the SDK by the way ?

 

It that RRG developping the SDK or ED ?

 

I'm just wondering why it get released thru a 3rd party kickstarter and not via ED channel. :shifty:

 

My guess is Kickstarter backers get it before general DCS World users can. Although a lot of this speculation could be easily answered by RRG and ED. ;)

Ilya talking about SDK.

(Did anyone watch the updates?) Almazi was asking for aerial photos with geotiff data. Ilya mentions putting in surface data in video. He did mention elsewhere that the SDK is open source and that there were things they'd have to change before release. Ilya writing the guide for it. ETA end October?

The problem is given that the SDK can be just going to be given only to those who have contributed to the Kickstarter (it is very possible that under conditions NDA), which only focuses on the WW2 field since the land is believe need to be checked by RRG and ED to be functional (the program that integrates the map under DCS: World and make funtional does not come with the SDK, or so said RRG).

I also am very excited about the SDK, this opens a lot of nice opportunities.

I remember Ilya mentioned in an update that he would love the community to work together on a project. The main issus would be 3D objects to create for the map.

How's about creating a repository of 3D building and other objects for DCS WW2 1944 for all to use freely (giving credit of course).

But now all we need is to wait for the SDK to arrive.

I'm sure GeoTIFF will be useable.

In the kickstarter update:

We're also working on something really cool which, to my knowledge, has never been done before in a flight sim.

 

The terrain can have multiple, potentially limitless, number of states that define virtually everything. What does that mean? It means we can have the early 1944 Normandy with Pointe du Hoc still intact. We can have the D-Day Normandy with bomb craters all over the coast, floodgates open, and some of the landing areas flooded. We can have the post-invasion Normandy with flooding receded and lots of new Allied airfields.

 

How will that affect map makers with the SDK?

well, according to luthier, the alpha version should be released in february

....so i guess that EDGE integration into dcs world should be finished rather soon...

but well, its the top communication and the commitment Luthier shows towards his customers and supporters why we still have to guess and assume so many things...:thumbup:

I think he is at the mercy of ED on this, its their tools, I dont think they will allow it to be released until they are ready for it to be released.

yeah possible, but that would be one sentence for him to post in this forum...well but he didnt even log in for months...so familiar...after his promises about communication with the backers and the community, his current behaviour is rude.
