  2. Sorry about the arrogant thread title. After 40 hours of flying, most of it in Flight Director mode, I feel there is an easier way to model what is said to be the real Ka50 flight control logic by the ED testers who contribute to this forum. (This applies to non-ffb sticks only.) The problem with flying without the FD is that the autopilot really does fight the pilot. This is patently obvious when one compares flying with and without flying with the FD. Others on this forum have described the autopilot's contribution when the pilot moves the controls as "rubberbanding". That's a perfect description. Flying with the FD on is one solution but it's an imperfect one. The autopilots provide an excellent assist for a pilot flying a combat helicopter single-pilot and turning the FD on and off as needed is a bit awkward--as is holding the trim. Here's the better way: The instant the pilot moves his stick outside the dead-zone, the autopilot attitude/heading hold should completely release. In other words, when the stick moves, the flight control system should respond exactly as if the player turned the FD on and when the stick is released the autopilot should return to the last trimmed attitude/heading. This is actually how the ED reps state the real Ka50 behaves and, as a 12000 hour pilot, it makes perfect sense to me. Smokin' Hole

  3. I have been following with interest the various threads relating to trimming and autopilot while i try and figure out how to fly and trim this beast correctly. However, despite all my reading up, I am still not sure what is the best way or combination to use the auopilot and flight director. do you: Use just the 3 auto pilot buttons switched on on their own? If so, what effect/function does this have (apart from the obvious heading pitch and altitude hold). Do they work indepentanly of the FD button? Use just the FD button, with none of the other 3 turned on? If so, what effect does this have? Or can you use some combination of the above, and again, if so, what are the effects and relative merits of these? What is the consensus on trimming? should it be done after every manouvre or avoided unless necessary? What will happen if you dont trim? And what is the effect of trimming with the autopilot or flight director on? Is it better to try and learn to fly first with or without the autopilot? (and or flight director? ) Sorry for all the questions, but i am having trouble figuring this out by trial and error, I just seem to get into situations that i cannot understand the reasons for, which makes it difficult to learn from. To learn from a mistake, you need to understand exactly what your mistake is!! Thanks, Mark

  5. Ok now specifically to your questions mrtube: That would be normal flight That's how real pilot are ordered to fly their ka-50s =) And that's in my opinion also the way you should fly it mostly in DCS (But I know there are a lot out there not sharing my opinion) It sure is harder to fly this way than with the FD on but once you know how to trim right and once you kinda do it automatically you will have no problems with this flight mode! No autopilots on but FD on = no effect except that your hud changes lol! The combination of both would be the FD mode ... well first what does the autopilots do... if you have the 3 "main" autopilots on (heading hold, bank and pitch hold) the autopilot will try its best to keep your helicopter in the last trimmed position! That means if you move your stick without pressing the trimmer you have to move it over 20% to kinda override the autopilot and therefore you are fighting it! How it should be done is you hold down the trimmer button, move you helicopter for a new heading, pitch or bank and once you are done you release the trimmer button, then you got no fight with autopilot! Ok now what does the FD mode do? With the autopilot channels and FD mode engaged, the autopilot will not try to get your helicopter in trimmed position but it will only dampen or let's say stabilize your helicopter... which means with all autopilots and FD off your helicopter will twist a bit here shake a bit there and so on and all that twisting and shaking and stuff like that will be dampened (so much that you actually dont feel it anymore at least in the sim) And i can tell you i use that flight director for close up fighting where i will have to change directions a lot. By the way the same as FD can also be achieved by just holding your trimmer button down. Trimming should be done for every change in flight! You can definately not trim too often! If you dont trim you have to fight the autopilot and you ont want to do that since flying, fighting the autopilot and maybe shooting at stuff is a bit too much =) So it is as easy as this if you trim you fly with the autopilot if you dont you fly against it and flying against it is something you shoudln't want!!! Well since you should have your autopilots on all the time you only trim with them on =) But with FD on trimming is kinda not neccesary in my opinion! No you do not need to fly without the Autopilots i mean it's like punching yourself? Why would you wanna fight the helicopter by not using autopilot channels??? You should fly it not fight it! So learn it the right way with a lot of trimming and autopilots and FD you can use also ! What are you sorry for that's what forums are there for right? Better to ask beforehand then learning it all wrong and being screwed with that later =)

  7. TAGERT, stop trying to attach your problems to other users. This MP crash has nothing common with you problem. Segwin, if I understood you right and you have crash on exiting MP game then I may say that this may be fixed in patch.

  13. Maybe it is needed more working with lua or entire files of game? I hope we'll get working R-73. In LO case there was also many times said, "that is it not possible".

  14. Yeah, it would be very good to play with R-73 and double R-60M, but unfortunately they are not working now... :)

  24. Yeah, but will the next engine/module be multithreaded? I don't think it will, because I don't think they know HOW to write a multithreaded engine/code.

  25. In case anyone is wondering, F4AF and Red Viper wont play very well on Vista. I know first hand. That is unless someone can tell me how they managed to get it working without all the bugs...

  26. Unfortunately, last time I checked, Frugals requires a non-web based email to register and registering is required for searching. I don't think there are any real "essentials" at this point. Most use OpenFalcon, FreeFalcon (both substantial, third-party upgrades that are not authorized by the current entity who owns the rights to the sim) or they just fly Allied Force. Allied Force is probably as "essential" as you can get. To be honest, and assuming you bought an old copy of Falcon 4.0, I would have probably bought Allied Force first since you're getting a product that can play on XP/Vista right out of the box. You can always upgrade it with payware stuff like HiTiles and cockpits. Personally, I like Red Viper. :) That being said, here's what I have to offer: Here's a good thread from the ED forums: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=30841 If you do some searching, you may find more. For your HOTAS set up, I'm assuming that you have the original Falcon 4.0 and not Allied Force. Allied Force has an excellent section that gives you the keyboard shortcuts for each HOTAS function as they apply to each button. If you don't have Allied Force or you don't want to program, I would check these places for a layout: http://www.freefalcon.com/forum/index.php http://www.f4forums.com/forums/ http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/ The first two links also happen to be the websites for Red Viper(FreeFalcon) and OpenFalcon.

  27. There are two things gong on with the controls. One is the force trim. In and of itself, force trim normally is not associated with the autopilot, as its purpose is to hold the cyclic and pedals in place through spring tension. When you press the trimmer button, you release the spring tension, making the controls easier to move. Releasing the trimmer button re-engages the spring tension, holding the cyclic and pedals in the new position. In the Ka-50, there is a second effect of the trim button: While the trimmer button is pressed, the "hold" functions of the autopilot get turned off temporarily, and releasing the trimmer button sets a new heading/attitude to hold for the autopilot. I am not positive on this part, but it works this way in other Russian helicopter autopilots, so I have a sneaking suspicion that it works as follows on the Ka-50 as well... There are compensation transducers attached to the flight controls that tell the autopilot if the controls are moving. So let's say you are in straight and level flight and for whatever reason, the aircraft starts to roll to the left (let's say it was a gust of wind or something, just not pilot input)..the autopilot will sense this roll through a roll rate gyro (for rate of roll) and your ADI (for amount of roll) and will send an input the to the lateral booster to eliminate the roll. Nothing is felt in the controls, and the aircraft stays in straight and level flight and the pilot is none the wiser (except that he thinks to himself how easy it is to fly the Ka-50!). Now let's take the same scenario, but the pilot inputs left cyclic to start a roll to the left. The autopilot still receives a signal from the roll rate gyro and the ADI telling it that the aircraft is rolling, but at the same time, the autopilot receives an opposite signal from the compensation transducer on the flight controls that essentially cancels out the signal form the gyro (or at least, it cancels out an amount equal to the input from the controls, it's still working to smooth out non-control related movements). Therefore, the autopilot won't offer any input and the aircraft will roll. Note that as soon as the controls stop moving, the autopilot will go back to holding the aircraft's attitude (the new one, not the old one) even without pressing the trimmer button (of course, you still need to hit the trimmer button, otherwise your controls will move back to where they were before you moved them, basically undoing your maneuver). AGain, I will point out that I cannot guarantee that this is how it works on a Ka-50, so you may choose to ignore everything I've said. ;)

  30. AFAIK, there's no straightforward way to do that. However, if you have stored additional info in your ABRIS while in prepare mode, you can copy/paste this additional set of data from one mission to another ;). To do so: 1) Open the mission file (.miz) with any archive managing software (.miz files are just zip-files with a modified extension ;) ) 2) Once the mission archive is unpacked, you will see an "ABRIS" folder. 3) Copy/extract this "ABRIS" folder anywhere, and insert it in any other mission-zipfile for which you'd like this additional info to be available :) You might also want to merge info or routes created. For that, you'll have to edit the lua files contained in the "ABRIS" folder ;) Actually, the path/files indicated in the GUI manual are not really files in your BS directory, but path in the archive structure of the mission-zipfile.

  31. Dear PE Tigar ... with respect to your working with PC's for years, I must disagree and display my shock that you would encourage people to not use antivirus software... If you do not browse the web, never download anything, and never get email, and are not hooked up to a network where any of those things happen, then sure, you don't need antivirus. BUT the simple act of hitting a web site that tells you to install a codec is enough to get infected. You don't have to do something stupid to get infected. And there are so many types of virus; ones that steal your information, ones that use your computer to perform attacks, ones that try to destroy your system ... you might be infected and not even know it... and it's more about the world of virus ... if everyone had anti-virus programs that were regularly updated, then these massive infections we all see every few months would not happen. That is why anti-virus companies are glad to give free software to home users, so they can reduce the potential of infections spreading. In short, using a computer that is connected to the internet and not using anti-virus is pretty similar to having sex without a condom with whoever shows up in the truck-stop bathroom. Not only are you putting yourself at risk, but you are increasing the risk for the rest of us. I used to use AVG but now I have been using Avast! for the past few weeks and it seems effective, seems pretty fast and does not get in the way. Both have free versions for home users. And btw, I personally feel that Norton Anti-Virus (which is possibly what you have in your "centrally managed" system at your work) is more like a virus than an anti-virus. Norton is not symbolic of the rest of the anti-virus world.

  32. Is it realistic for a real Ka-50 pilot to take off on a mission and return to land and rearm multiple times with a 30 second break between take of and landing(the amount of time in game for a hot rearm and refuel)? Don't you think routine maintenance would be required in that time frame? Is it realistic for a real Ka-50 to have it's laser powered long enough to reach it's operational life in one mission? You want realism but when it doesn't suit your needs you complain... the developers just can't win.

  33. If you've ever played Lockon online, you've probably noticed that the server you connect to enforces whatever 'scene' setting it uses onto you, the client. For some, this can be bad, since some have PC's that aren't capable or suffer from bad FPS if the server forces a High or Medium setting. There was, however, a way to trick the game into using whatever file you desire. DCS has a very similar engine to LO as you know, and the same editing tricks can be applied....all you have to do go into the folder 'Eagle Dynamics\Ka-50\Bazar\Terrain\Scenes" and look for 3 files: High.scn Medium.scn Low.scn (i advise that you backup all 3 files before you do this) If you want to have it on, say, Low scenes all the time, you just delete Medium.scn and High.scn, make 2x copies of the Low.scn and rename one Medium.scn and the other High.scn. The same goes for if you want Medium scenes, or High scenes :) Hope this is of some use to some
