  1. We (The War Hawks) are happy to help anybody that feels they can benefit from asking for help. War Hawk or not. I have personally helped 3 people I did not know that could not keep the chopper airborne (rotor collision, engine torque, transmission, mostly due to rough handling and fighting the stick) due to trim problems. After 2 hours they could take off, fly straight, and execute simple turns with some clarity and purpose. Did I turn them into elite pilots? Of course not, but they were better off and less frustrated afterward. Some people just need a foundation to build off of. I never claimed to be an Elite pilot. I learn new things all the time from a variety of sources. What I am claiming is I don't require a pre qualifying level of competence before I feel like its worth my time to offer any assistance and I don't feel like any assistance or advice I offer is worthless. I have been exposed to aviation for years (I work for the largest (commercial) aircraft maintenance base in the world, get to see F16's take off everyday, have seen the stealth bomber do touch and goes (we are super close to the runway), have seen AWACS do fly bys, have gotten to go into a Russian Antonov An-124, and I will be one of the early people to see the 787)and flown a variety of flight sims, but I have never appreciated aviation until DCS. So it's very important to me that people have a good time playing it instead of feeling like it's an exercise in frustration (like say from breaking the chopper due to fighting your trim). I want to serve the hobby not just my squad. If you just want to learn and have fun and help others give us a try. WH_QuickSilver http://war-hawks.net/

  2. Dedicated to the community, V1.7 of my Editor MOD is available here: Lockon User Files and here: STP Forum (please hit "Refresh" if you see the old image) By installing this MOD the following features are added or changed in BS Mission Editor Coalitions Now you can change coalitions at any time. Click on the new coalitions icon to open the coalitions dialog. Trigger Editor Newly created trigger objects will be inserted into the trigger list behind the currently selected trigger item - not at the end anymore. In trigger dialog, there now are arrow buttons at the top of each listbox, so you can move the currently selected item one position up or down within the list. The new "CLONE" buttons below each of the lists create a deep copy of the currently selected trigger, rule or action and insert it behind the selected element. Changed the width of the two trigger edits "Name" and "Type" to enhance readability. If this proves to be helpful other edit box widths could be changed as well in future releases In trigger dialog, there now are two rule lists that are AND or OR combineable. The two modes ((OR) AND (OR)) and ((AND) OR (AND)) can be selected by pressing the new buttons "(A) AND (B)" and "(A) OR (B)" between the lists. It's up to you to leave one list empty. Existing missions created in older or unmodded installations are compatible and can be edited without limitations. Missions containing AND/OR triggers are runtime compatible with unmodded hosts. Unit List The new button "CLONE" creates a deep copy of the currently selected unit group including waypoints, targets, target categories, units, their payloads and liveries. The new buttons "SHOW ALL", "HIDE ALL" and "TOGGLE" work like their counterparts in the trigger list dialog but only the visible list elements are affected. So, using the filters, you can selectively show or hide groups of elements or toggle between them. Map View This MOD features <51>Case's "bearing bugfix"; Thank you Case! Missions created and edited using ModdedME run on unmodded installations too. Missions created with an older or unmodded version can be edited without restrictions. Use ModMan to install. For further details you can visit http://spare-time-pilots.de/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=543 or post your questions here. Version history V1.7 NEW: in trigger dialog every listbox now has arrow buttons to move list entries up or down within the list NEW: in trigger dialog every listbox now has a button "CLONE" that inserts a copy of the selected item NEW: in trigger dialog there now are 2 rule lists (A and B) and two buttons "(A) OR (B)" and "(A) AND (B)" that allow different logical combinations of rule items NEW: contains <51>Case's bearing bugfix. Thank you Case! FIX: Hammer (STP) and Pat01 (eagle.ru) found out, that liveries of aircraft are not copied for cloned items, what is now fixed. Thanks Pat and Hammer! INFO: Cloning units moves the first waypoint a few hundred meters away from it's original position to prevent "ghost objects" in map editor, but this could change the waypoint task. V1.6 NEW: coalitions can be edited at any time and for existing missions. FIX: button "duplicate" in units list now (at least partially) visible at horizontal screen resolution of 1280px V1.5 FIX: bug in trigger duplicate function caused groups of existing triggers to change their type when a clone's type was changed FIX: airfield information was missing of cloned groups that start on ramp V1.4 First public version.

  3. As a mechanic, I'm very curious bout the intricacies of Russian aircraft. How those all it come together? How do they work? Most people won't be interested on this but, I figure, it would not hurt to ask. See, most people would like to fly a MIG-29 for an hour, I just want to take it apart and put it together while drinking some beers with buddies. Most people want to know how fast it goes, I want to know how difficult is to replace the engine. Ok anyway, some of the things I was wondering about; I always see Russian aircraft with ground power applied before engine start; What is the external power used for? DCS BS shows that external ground power is not needed for start, are the fix wing aircraft the same way? What power do they use, DC, AC or both? I ask because newer US aircraft do not use or required any external equipment to start. F-15, F-16, A-10, F-117, F-18. All this aircraft can start engine without and external source of power or air. The F-4 in contrast, requires external air source to spin the engines for start. Many old aircraft needed this. Do Russian aircraft have batteries? F-15 does not have a batteries but F-16 and F-117 do. I keep reading and hearing how Russian aircraft are able to operate from unprepared fields, how unprepared are we talking about? Just find it hard to comprehend a 40,000 lbs aircraft not getting stuck while trying to taxi on pack earth. I get the cargo aircraft, many wheel so weight is spread to more areas, but only 3 wheels, like on most attack or fighter aircraft do not seem to be the best suited for rough field operations. Can they taxi or land while fully loaded on a unprepared field? If not, what are the limitations? SU-25 In FC and FC2, it seems left engine airframe mounted gear box will power flight controls while right will power landing gear hydraulically. How close to the real this is this? I thinks this is crazy if it is at all close to the real deal. F-16 has 3 hydraulic pumps. F-117 had more than 4. On the F-15 and F-117, ether engine could pressurize both hydraulic systems. You would obviously have less gallons per minute (GPM) but you would have require pressure and more than enough GPM . Do Russian aircraft have accessory drive gear boxes or airframe mounted gear boxes? For us this is where the generators and Hydraulic pumps are mounted. I doubt I will get any responses, after all is not as interesting as flying this great machines. I guess I will see, fingers cross :geek: I bet this has been ask before, I should start searching :suspect::ermm:

  5. Russian air force is very new to Naval Based operations. Initially VTOL was chosen to "pioneer" modern carrier ops, later Kuznetsov and SU-33s were introduced. However, shortly after the introduction of the first true Aircraft Carrier the USSR dissolved and as such put everything on halt. So, naval craft are very few since there is only 1 carrier in the navy. For land based ac there are drag chutes, that if I am not mistaken have their own set of back ups for proper deployment in emergencies.

  6. Got you. I understand you meaning now. I think what was confusing me is that I do not know of any other way for a dynamic or moving pressurize hydraulic system to maintain pressure without pumps, so I was having trouble understanding why temperature was being mix with pressure. Again, going back to my experience with F-16 and trying to apply and compare it to other aircraft. F-16, temperature changes affect the level of hydraulic fluid, not the pressure. Same goes for any pressurize fluid, like engine oil. Pressure is regulated my accumulator, relief valves, the pumps themselves, etc, so temperature changes do not affect pressure. Now for the nitrogen used in the accumulator, temperature affects their pressure. I hope this makes since. Are there aircraft out there with a hydraulic system without pumps? How does that work? Keep in mind the reporter on the video is a bit ignorant on what she is talking about. The emergency pump only has to worry about flight controls, everything else has more back ups. Landing gear for example can be extended pneumatically, brakes have their own set of accumulator that just sit there pressurize. If the brakes fail he can also use the tail hook to stop. By both engine, I assume, you mean main engine and JFS or are we talking about another aircraft besides F-16? How come Russina fighters do not have a tail hook like western aircraft, how they get the aircraft stopped without hydraulic pressure?

  10. True, liquids are not compressible (or at least, in relation to gases, compress so little as to be useless in the context of this discussion). However, pretty much all hydraulic systems on aircraft incorporate some kind of accumulator system to either dampen or store hydraulic pressure. In many cases, this is done by forcing hydrualic fluid into a chamber that contains a gas-filled bladder. Liquid entering the chamber compresses the bladder and the gas within it (usually nitrogen). If the normal hydraulic pressure system (the pump) fails, the compressed bladder will force the hydraulic fluid into the system for a short period of time (until the bladder expands fully into the chamber).

  16. Here is a link from your favourite aviation knowledge source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_D-21/M-21 Do you mean R-36 when you talk about "SATANA" ? If you mean the R-36, it's a huge missile, Silo launch only! I bet you meant Topol-M. Do more Wikipedia before posting! As for having ICBM which are mobile launched, USA dropped that in their strategy, not because they had "shit solutions".

I'd love to know what determines the LOD value for the hangers, separate to the main Graphics.cfg LOD value Edit:- this applies for FC2 too FWIW. EDIT2:- The LOD effect is really obvious in this pic from mustang, you can see 3 levels of LOD in a really short distance. Nate

  22. In the RNZAF when I was there (early nineties) it was 2000 candidates apply to the recruiters for pilot training every four months and around 16 would be accepted for the officer's course, lose a couple on the officer course then some would be commissioned (ground officers), some would go to university first, and the rest to flight school. Maybe 4 would graduate flight school. Everyone was trained to fighter pilot ability and got some A4 time (hence the very high standard) - it is a shame our F-16s were cancelled (change of government to a more 'dovish' one at the time) since we could have fielded a lot of good pilots for them. All our best pilots went to the helos and strike squadrons if they chose to (and the squadron accepted them). Others went to transport and maritime (P3 Orions). We might have have amateur gear but the pilots were very good. The Aussies have similar high standards and they now have the SuperBug. RAF is also quality. Israel's standards are also very high, and they have a pilot relegation system so only the best performers stay in the best squadrons (if you snooze you lose). Point is, every country has different standards. So be careful sneering at the rotorheads as "not good enough to make fighters". I know of some guys who flunked the RNZAF pilot training but ended up flying Tornados in the RAF. This doesn't mean the RAF is worse, just that different air forces empahsise different things and having the best or most gear doesn't automatically mean all your pilots are better. As always, each air force has a distribution of proficiency levels, with some distributions being shifted higher than others.

  24. You would be surprised. You should read about the Su-27 variants and see all of them has that radar listed as a possibility for custumer request. The others are PESA and futerly AESA. Its hard to come by with information regarding wich precise variant of the radar each custumer opted, but every time someone chooses something above a version of the N001 it makes headlines in the internet and magazines. To my knowlege Only China and India purchased better radars, and also opted for the RVV-AE missile. None of the others AFAIK has donne this.

  26. I'll reserve my judgement for later... It could be awesome, it could blow. I'm really confused because they shut down their game studio... So all I can think of are: A) It's being outsourced, which would suck. B) It's for the 360... which would suck even more. Either way, I hope they stick with it being a sim... going the arcade route would just fail so hard.
