Hey guys, Someone leaked an early photo of work we are doing in FC2, so I thought I'd post it offically for you. Please note the MFCD's are just images at the moment and are not functional. We have done a lot more work on this and I'll leave the suprise for later in the year. Thanks, Ells.2 points

SEE POST #34 FOR VIDEOS!!!! I just had the opportunity to spend a couple of days covering Hawgsmoke 2010 at Gowen Field in Boise, Idaho. Hawgsmoke 2010 was hosted by the Idaho Air National Guards 190th Fighter Squadron, who were the winners of the 2008 competition and thus became the hosts of this years. Since the 190th won again this time, the second place winners will host Hawgsmoke 2012. On Wednesday Oct. 13 I spent a good part of the day on the ramp at Gowen taking shots of ramp activity and arriving A-10 teams. It was pretty much heaven for a Warthog fan!! It was a very busy place, with aircraft being serviced, readied for the following days competition, landing, taxiing, parking, running up engines, etc. There was only a very small contingent of media covering the event, and we were allowed to shoot pretty much anything we wanted on the ramp. I talked to a few of the maintainers a bit but they were extremely busy....the Idaho ANG crews were trying to take care of all the visiting planes to get them ready to go the next day. The next day, Thursday October 14, I traveled to the Saylor Creek Range and spent about 4 hours watching A-10's bomb and strafe. Much has been said about the sound of the GAU-8/A cannon...I have heard it compared to a chainsaw in sound. I can tell you that words cannot really describe it, and video does not really capture the essence of the sound either. It is LOUD and very distinctive. When the aircraft fired from longer ranges, you would hear a popping or crackling sound much like a string of firecrackers...this was the sound of the supersonic rounds passing overhead...then a second or so later you would hear the actual ripping, roaring sound of the gun. Had you been on the receiving end, you wouldn't have heard anything, you would have dead before the sound got there! There were 18 teams and 40+ A-10's at the competition. The overseas teams did not fly thier own A-10's, thier pilots flew in commercial and used "borrowed" A-10's for the event. Most teams brought 4 planes, a few brought a spare and a few brought less and used one or two borrowed birds. At the range, the teams first performed a high altitide bomb drop using BDU-33 practice bombs. The A-10's flew the approach at about 17K feet and released at about 7K feet. From the ground, the A-10 is impossible to see at 17000 feet and even when they got down to 7000, you had to be looking in the right spot to get a visual on them. They then made a Maverick pass, no missle was fired, but they had to get a lock with thier Maverick. All aircraft were carrying two CATM-65 missles, one EO and one IR. In one case, I heard the pilot advise the range controller his missle would not activate in TRAIN mode and ask permission to make his pass in ARM, the range controllers denied the request. I am not sure if that was purely a safety issue as the CATM-65 has no actual motor and can't leave the rail, or if it was just protocol for the contest. The planes third pass was a low altitude bombing run with BDU-33 25 lb. practice bombs again. Thier fourth pass was a 30mm gun run at a strafing target. If they missed, they had to make another strafing run from a longer distance. After all the gun runs were complete, the planes had about three minutes to join back up in formation and make a formation pass over the range, and that ended their time. A few things I found interesting....all the A-10's I saw were C models....as evidenced by the cockpit coaming and/or the presence of Sniper pods, or Litening pods on 2/10. All the planes arrived with the two CATM-65 Mavericks, two TER's, and usually two baggage pods. Some had the AIM-9 rails, some did not. The only difference was the Davis Monthan birds that arrived with ALQ-131 pods on station 11 and one CATM-9 on station 1. The teams used a "degraded" gunsight reticule and bombing mode for the event. At one point I heard the statement they were bombing in HARS mode. I presume this means they were using the older electronics and not the IFFCC of the C model. Even at that, they were usually very accurate. We were probably 500 to 600 yards from the bomb target, but only 200 yards or so from the strafing pit. We were just slightly to the left of the gun line for the strafing pits, so we were very close...I was very surprised we were able to be that close, but its a testament to the confidence the Air Force has in the accuracy of the weapons system. I hope you enjoy the pics! They are possible due to the hospitality of the 124th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Officer, Capt. Tony Vincelli, and his staff! A 190th Fighter Squadron A-10 taxies in during Hawgsmoke 2010. Mavericks on 3 & 9, TER's on 5 & 7, and an AN/AAQ-28 Litening pod on station 10. An Idaho ANG A-10C taxies past with the Boise foothills in the background. The nose of a very dirty A-10C out of Nellis. The entire plane was sooty from gun residue, obviously this one gets shot a lot!! Another Idaho A-10C taxis past the Boise Air Terminal. A "Warthog" A-10C from Barksdale, tailcode "BD". An A-10C from the Michigan "Red Devils" 107th Fighter Squadron with the speedbrakes open. Michigan ANG A-10's taxi to thier spots on the ramp. An enthusiastic A-10 pilot from the 23rd Operations Support Squadron, Moody AFB. The Flying Tigers have arrived!!! The much cleaner of the two Nellis birds. Some planes still carry the AN/AAS-35V Pave Penny laser spot tracker along with the Sniper or Litening pods, and some do not. A Blackhawk puts in an appearance. Blackhawks and Apaches are also stationed at Gowen Field. Most of us tried unsuccessfully to wrangle a ride in a Blackhawk, or better yet, an Apache!! We can dream can't we?? BDU-33's on a TER ready to go. Another Idaho A-10 on the runway. Warthog nose art on the Barksdale A-10C's of the 47th Fighter Squadron. This is my favorite Warthog nose art. A Nellis A-10 pulls off after a pass over the Saylor Creek range. A-10C aircraft from the Idaho ANG 190th Fighter Squadron in a tight four ship over the Saylor Creek range. I was not at all surprised to find out the 190th won again...thier flying and shooting was excellent. An A-10 from the 303rd Fighter Squadron out of Whiteman AFB at Hawgsmoke. A 190th FS A-10 pulls off target over the Saylor Creek range. 30mm rounds from the A-10's GAU-8/A Avenger cannon rip through the left panel of the strafe target at Saylor Creek range. An A-10C from the 45th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan AFB makes a strafing run during Hawgsmoke 2010.1 point

Simplified reference for HOTAS functions. This is to provide a better format (one page rather than the manual's 8.) NOTE: Some switches (like Boat) are not listed in the X52 version, as I've separated those functions in my X52 control setup (this thread). I've attached the Excel files (WH and X52) for your editing and printing pleasure. WARTHOG HOTAS: HOTASFunctions(WH).zip HOTASFunctions(x52).zip1 point

Spent my lunch break pouring over the Laser-Guided Bomb Employment part of the manual. Got home and tried it out this evening. Just amazing. I fkn love it. I can now confidently hit any part of a building i want and i love the way you can switch from white hot to black hot then zoom in smoothly using DMS FORWARD and AFT to see the good work you have done. Just loving this sim. So much to learn it's made my year with regards to SIMS. I'm off to learn something else. Cheers :)1 point

Ok heres how to change the view angles for the snapviews. Bear in mind that this being a Beta Wags has already stated that modding files is a no no. 1) Back up "DCS A-10C Beta\Config\View" folder. 2) Open DCS A-10C Beta\Config\View\View.lua with notepad++ and set "UseDefaultSnapViews" on line 50 to false, save and exit. 3) Open DCS A-10C Beta\Config\View\Snapviews.lua with notepad++. The A10C has the plane index 11 and the snapview index is the KP_No.+1 so 3 in the case of the CDU. I changed the value of line 970 from 19.something to 29.something which gives a fairly good view of the screen and keyboard. :)1 point

You know, I don't really buy that. In fact, if you take a look at some of the websites and groups run by former members of the special forces community (I believe one of them is called "stolen valor," or something along those lines), they say that one of the primary indicators that someone's posing as someone they aren't is that they say they "can't discuss" who they are/what they do/etc. That's not to say that OPSEC related details of specific events, times, places, facts, and so forth aren't sometimes secret, but a person's job? The A-10's existence isn't classified. Someone here feel free to correct me, but I've never heard of anyone being prohibited from discussing what their MOS *is*. I think the reality is something along the lines of what they say about real life (and the military especially) making a lot of stuff that might seem like it would be fun, not fun. My 2c. Plus a simulator just doesn't have the ability to duplicate that crushing level of fatigue you get from flying *a lot*, especially when you've not done it in awhile. If only.1 point

1.Select Maverick on MFCD 2.Look under your HUD at the keyboard (UFC) 3.Click whatever number corresponds to the desired slew rate (1-5) 4.On the MFCD displaying maverick feed look for button that says "slew rate" and click it. It's that simple! now using the maverick, well that's a different story...;)1 point

No it's not when the question has already been answered in the same thread: http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1004454&postcount=12 And... Forum rules: 1.10. - Product feedback and constructive criticism is encouraged when provided in a mature and courteous manner. However, feedback that is abusive, insulting or condescending is not welcome. Additionally, to bring up a particular issue repeatedly after it has already been acknowledged will be considered "trolling" - in such cases a warning will be issued to the author and the post will be removed.1 point

Its a valid question. I don't think anyone needs to relax. Posting your opinion and asking questions is what forums are for. If you don't like the question then don't respond to it. :doh:1 point

Indeed, a few of you really need to relax. As soon as a STABLE build is ready that fixes more than it breaks, we'll update the beta. Yeesh.1 point

Can do. Attached are the SVGs. (Scalable Vector Graphics) Those can be edited with Inkscape for example. I already made a correction to the china hat, which should have forward and aft directions instead of up and down. Cheers! TM HOTAS Warthog Layout Sources.zip1 point

I assume that when the Beta is updated ther will be an announcment in the Official Updates Forum, the Beta Forum and the DCS A10C Forum. Don't worry about missing it I'm sure it'll be very easy to spot the update when it arrives there will be two dozen threads on the A10 page about the update, How do I update, I can't update my game, When is the next update?, The update ruined my game settings! etc. Use some common sense, How did you find out about the Beta in the first place?1 point
-
Well, that's a nice thread hot shot but it doesn't answer the question that were ask. WHERE WILL THE UPDATES FOR THE BETA BE POSTED AND HOW DOES A PERSON GET IT DOWNLOADED????? Thanks anyway1 point

LOL... Crazy is as crazy does Forrest. Actually, I was once asked by the evening news lady while our LAN group in MSP was being interviewed, why I "do flight simulations" when I fly for a living. The obvious answer was that when I'm at work, I don't get to blow stuff up, fly inverted under the railroad bridge, and "get tone" on other airliners! Seriously though, over the years, the RL pilots I've turned on to flight sims have all loved them. Before he moved away, our LAN group was proud to have Lloyd "Bozo" Abel as one of our members. Bozo is a good friend of mine (we were roomies when I was based in Boston flying the DC-10), and he's most famous for doing a lot of the F-14 Tomcat flying in the movie "Top Gun". Super guy, flew Jane's F/A-18 with us and loved it. I was flying a trip a few years ago with an ex-Hawg driver, so I fired up my laptop to demo LO:MAC to him. When the loading splash screen came up, he announced that he had flown that very machine! LOL...go figure. I showed him the sim, and he thought it was "cool". I obviously didn't have any sort of HOTAS gear with me on the road, so he didn't get a chance to do any flying, but nonetheless, he liked what he saw. Not sure why more "RL" pilot types aren't into flight sims. Probably the time involved, the expense (PLEASE don't tell my wife about me asking Santa for a new "Warthog" HOTAS for Christmas), and the like. I would guess that, as much as nearly every pilot I've ever met is (at heart) just a kid that never grew up, I'm thinking that if you plop them down in front of a screaming gaming machine, let them caress a nice HOTAS (wait, that didn't sound right)... they'd be in heaven. Have a great day all! BBall1 point

Ditto... I'll be buying one as soon as I can get my grubby mits on one :)1 point

Re: Looking for an A-10 pilot? I spoke with several of my squadron's A-10 pilots today about the game and downloaded and showed them the manual. We are all VERY impressed with the realism of the C-Model Warthog game from DCS. It should come as no surprise though since they already have developed and built our HOTAS trainer for the C-Model. It is spot on and the realism is beyond what you might expect. Enjoy the game! I can answer many questions but will not go into anything classified at all. I fly in this game as SKULL01 and my wingman is SKULL02 See you all over the battlefield!1 point

I'd definitely shell out a few bucks (up to $15) for this kind of App, and to be honest buying an iPad is much more appealing than a touch screen monitor.1 point

Ooh, now I see what you mean. Coming from the X-52 (standard) basically anything that doesn't rotate like helicopter blades is an improvement for me! :) X-52's throttle seems real solid, but the stick has a LOT of wiggle to it. Doesn't really translate into game though. The rotarys on the throttle however jiggle constantly to the point where I had to unmap them from zoom since it was constantly twitching.1 point

Here's what I've managed so far as a vector base template. It's a PNG of the PSD file. I don't have an exact match for the FAA font, if anyone knows what it is exactly I'd like to know. Also I have no idea what the various header and footer ID markings are supposed to mean. I have just figured out how to make proper vector filled objects so that should make recreating the map objects much quicker/better.1 point

I have worked on the A-10 (6 years) and F-16 (11 years). Mower, when I was in Alaska I had a few friends that were A-10 and F-16 pilots. They did try the game out and the F-16 pilot laughed at the 120. He just said that it's wrong, he could really go into any details. The A-10 pilot said it flew pretty good, but was a lil slow.1 point

I doubt any RL Hog Drivers will show up here let alone fly the sim. Many are Guard pilots with full time jobs (so already busy) and, if you do it RL full time, why would you want to simulate it?1 point

You're saying becasue of a few errors the BS pdf is a Beta manual? Anyway the sim has been out for years so how much longer are you going to wait for some minor corrections.. And even if they actually do make any changes then we can just print up the relevant pages and swap them out.1 point
