This is one of my favorite stories about student USAF pilots. It happened at Reese AFB in the early '80's to my boss near the end of a contact sortie with a somewhat new stud. I was the assistant flight commander of E Flight at the time and I hadn't flown the second go of the day. I was just hanging out in office going through grade books. What fun. The SOF (Supervisor of Flying) called the flight on the squawk box saying they needed me at the SOF desk for an IFE with one of our jets. It seemed Frank, my flight commander, had just declared a physiological emergency and was returning direct to inside downwind of the pattern. That's not something we liked to do unless it was pretty serious because it really can disrupt a busy pattern. The pattern wasn't all that full so the SOF told Frank to just do it. That's about the time I got to the desk. The SOF wanted to know about the stud and whether he'd had any known history of physical problems. He hadn't. The next thing he said was a bit strange. He said Frank wouldn't tell him the problem. He only said he needed to get on the ground quickly and that they would not need fire and rescue to meet them. He stressed that he needed to get to the chocks right now. And that's how it worked out. I was still at the desk when frank walked in without the student about fifteen minutes later. The grin told us that this was going to be a good story. The sortie had gone to the aux field for some pattern work and then up into the area to do air work. It's been a long time but I seem to remember the kid being post solo so they would have done a spin or two, slow flight, stalls, and maybe a couple unusual attitude recoveries. Anyway, Frank said the kid had gotten unusually quiet and was being a little slow to do things and respond. Those are classic "he's-about-to-puke" signs so Frank asked him if he felt OK. The kid says, "Uh, sir, I really, really need to take a dump, bad." Frank, "How bad." Kid, "Like right now sir." "Right now?" "Yes sir, I don't think I can hold it." That's when Frank took the jet and headed for the recovery gate while he called the SOF for permission to go direct to inside downwind. With that call out of the way he talked to Lubbock Approach, who controlled our MOAs, and asked for an expedited recovery. He stayed 500' above the normal pattern altitude when he got to the pattern entry point and headed direct to the perch for the 180 degree turn to final of a overhead pattern to a landing. All went quickly and they were in the chocks in no time. Frank told the kid to arm his seat as they landed, Frank shut down the left engine, and had our hero disconnect the buckles to his chute so all he had to do when they parked was to release the seat harness, pop off his helmet, and jump out. All of that worked as advertised and before the right engine is even shut down the kid is over the side and running for the maintenance line shack about 50 yards away. Well, as Frank told it, he wasn't really running so much as doing a cheeks clenched stiff legged duck scuttle. The kid got across the perimeter road and suddenly straightened up nearly stopping. His feet come apart but his cheeks stay clenched as he now does a straight backed, bow legged walk. The trail of runny brown on the sidewalk behind him said it all. Poor bastard! So close. Oh, so close. That's funny enough but then he didn't have the good sense to not go into the line shack. He may not have known he was leaving a snail trail dribbling behind him but the zebra (senior master sgt. in this case) in the line shack sure as hell did. No sooner than the door closed but here comes our hapless young LT at a dead run with a fire breathing maintenance chief hot on his tail. There's no longer any thought about the load in his flight suit because his only concern is to out run the charging zebra. I suspect the zebra was like a dog chasing a car. What was he going to do when he caught him? The guy's toxic. Beating his ass might not have been that great of an idea. Doesn't matter, our LT could run, a serious load in his skivvies not the slightest worry any more. Everyone at the SOF desk was howling by the time Frank got to that part. The Ops Officer had joined us and even he couldn't avoid tears from roaring laughter. I never did hear how it went when the poor kid went back to the line shack with a bucket and mop but he was smart enough to take a case of beer with him when he went. Ah, the care and feeding of new pups.3 points

Some of you may already know it, for the rest: http://www.foia.cia.gov/search.asp Here you can find some interesting things, well the most interesting things are still censored :D As an example here is a document about U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird ops: http://www.foia.cia.gov/docs/DOC_0000192682/DOC_0000192682.pdf Did you know that in 1950-1960 (U-2 became operational) UFO reports began to rise significantly? If anyone has used my FPS Reference Mission from the beta forums, let me give you some updates on the contrast between beta4 and release. My FPS was topped out at 40 high 28 lowest while looking out the HUD and watching 3 flights (12 birds) of KA-50s approach my aircraft at low altitude. Here are the differences: *I now get 58 / 32 FPS *Dust from the helos now shows up and looks great *Smoke from their exhaust now shows up and looks great *The formations of KA-50s don't trip over one another.. they formed up quickly and came at me smoothly as they were supposed to in the first place. *The HDR from the runway lights looks a heck of a lot better *When I turn around and look at the sun I get no FPS drop *My canopy reflections look awesome and really immerse me *I can hear radio chatter This is all very much worth the wait and ED should be commended on taking the time to develop this product so completely and with such finesse. I hope that the people who bashed ED for taking so long for the next update spend some time to apologize in this thread. They deserve our respect and reverence as they're VERY good at what they do. They've gone above and beyond. I am literally applauding right now.. hold on.. ok there it is. Take a bow ED. Wow.. just wow. EDIT: p.s. - I'll be interested to know whether they implemented a new AI engine. The AI is very different from how it was in Beta. It is superb! Also, is that really Samuel L. Jackson narrating the training missions? I'd put that on the cover! :)2 points

Hey guys, I find it really hard to spot targets in DCS: A-10C Warthog unless they are within like 2nm. I feel this is because it is of course a simulator, and cannot display as high of resolution as real life can. Would I be correct in saying that you can spot tanks further away in real life than you can in DCS? But on the other hand, in real life there is stuff like grass, brush, trees, dust, etc... So what do you guys think?1 point

Depending on your needs, then the 2500k bundles should do, but if you want lots of memory then go for the 1366 bundles. If your only intent is browsing the internet, watching movies etc and playing games then the 2500k is perfect for you. But if you actually use your rig for hardcore shit, then maybe the i7 950 with support for 24gig of ram would be a better bet. Personally I would go for the 2500k just now as its cheaper and then upgrade in a years time when the 2500k and 2600k's daddy is released. If you are not buying yet, then keep your cash if you can til after summer and you will get the new cpu's that everyone is waiting for, the daddy to the baby 25/26k's.1 point

МСФС - процедурный, согласен. А ДКС уже давно - комплексный (и не обзывайте его процедурным). Т.е. ФМ и моделирование систем на совсем другом уровне.1 point

Yes and that's fine, apart from the fact that as many people have tried to explain, that IS NOT what happens when you've move your eyes closer to (or further away from) a real holographic heads up display. What happens in reality is exactly what happens in the sim with TIR mapped as normal. For the americans out there, a hud operates in a very similar (albeit more complicated) way to a holographic rifle sight such as the EOTech, so go and find one of those if you don't have easy access to a modern fighter aircraft. Now this is not to say there is anything at all wrong with mapping the FOV to your TIR Z axis if that is what you prefer, due to poor eye sight etc. But please stop moaning that the hud isn't working properly when in fact it is.1 point

Just leave it. If people don't know who Jim is, they can either check his account here on the forum (ooooh!), or they can check the credits in the game(s) (wow!), or they can open the manual and see the credit list (amazing!). This is not complex guys. Stop making mountains off of a sand-grain. I know this is the internets but seriously, stop going 4chan on my turf or I'll start putting force behind my words.1 point

my guess is beta 6 went so well they are now working on rc1 lets hope so everybody keep you chins up it is pointless moaning and groaning it gets you nowhere ed wags and co have never let us down maybe a few delays sure but at the end of the day they have always come good how many other companies out there put as much detail in their sims as ed does remember this is a nieche market so cut the guys some slack i bet when the next version comes out it will offer lots more features than the change log states .......keep.............smillng.......:)1 point

Actually, the Shvkal is not really the best way to go for locating targets. The problem is the Skhval FOV is so small that it is impractical to full search areas before you fly into them. It depends on what the terrain around you is like, but usually, your primary sensor is your eyeballs. You need a large monitor, and you need to be spending ALOT of time zoomed all the way in. It's actually pretty easy to visually spot targets in Black Shark out to sometimes greater than 8km. You shouldn't have a hard time spotting something inside 5km for sure. They look like dark spots. Don't go quickly through hostile areas either, go slowly enough to search out the terrain you are going to fly in. Alot of times you need a closer look at something; to search a cluttered village, to spot targets from really far away, to check if that little dot is a tree or a Shilka. That's when the shkval comes in useful in target searching. Also you have to be aware of terrain contours, which will hide areas. Every time a terrain countour becomes unhidden, then search it. No reason to get a separate monitor for the shkval, when you own like a 24" monitor and zoom all the way in, then the skhval is MUCH bigger than a mere 10 or 12 inches. Also, being young and having good eyesight helps alot too. If you have poor eyesight, then you need to buy a bigger monitor to make up for it.1 point

Discovered this one after 1 year of flying LO FC (omg) It is said that daylight TV guided weapons are useless at night, that is not true...- Did you know, that Su-25T can use TV guided weapons in total darkness? :smartass: It's achieved by combining two types of weapons one of which is free fall bombs called "candle" or SAB-100 Illumination Bomb: This 100 kg-caliber flare-bomb is used to illuminate a target area after dark. The dispensing container is released from an altitude of 1000 – 3000 m, after which illuminating flares are ejected in sequence. Each flare element is equipped with a parachute to decrease the rate of fall. The illumination time lasts 1 – 5 minutes, which is more than enough to deploy your "fire and forget" TV guided bombs or missiles. NOTE: You still need "Mercury" to get the "lock". Got one of my flight mates confused, he left the server for a brief moment to change his weapons, was a night time mission and before he rejoined I deployed a few "candles" over the parking space, he came back ready for night and found day brightness with black sky... his reaction was funny, what da ** ..? :shocking: Woohoo LO is full of surprises... :pilotfly:1 point
