Ask Cali, Tweet, Rugg, Or Grimes - I could go much further with that one and definitely make it much more perverted.....but I don't wanna get slapped around for breaking the forums rules :D Back on topic though - OFP and the ArmA series have always been fun. OFP was the first of it's type and many take the purist stance when it comes to OFP since it busted their cherry for warfare simulation. It's the same argument as Starseige: Tribes vs Tribes 2, Unreal 1 vs Unreal Tournament, etc etc and so forth. The ArmA series has it's bugs and shortcomings, . So did OFP. Any game that is ambitious enough to take on that many elements of the battlefield in a simulation aspect is going to have shortfalls due to hardware and engine limitations. As a former R&D tech who worked night & day for software integration, I accept that. Many who continually complain and critique are not developers have not experienced the absolute frustration of fixing one thing only for that single fix to break 50 other lines of code and do not know the countless weeks that go into successfully achieving just a few of the items on the "To Do" list. Since I do not always use Steam to launch my games (I prefer retail boxes myself), I cannot tell you how many hundreds of hours I have poured into OFP, ArmA, ArmA 2, and ArmA: OA. That's hundreds of hours EACH, not combined. I've played each one as it's own game without constantly comparing it to the previous title. While I have my reservations about BIS going for a more "near future" type approach by using more experimental and "drawing board" weapons and vehicles, I do think it is a very ambitious undertaking that, if done right, could be just as much fun as the previous titles have been. I say that because we have played for years using M-16's, M-4's, AK-47's, Mi-8's, Humvee's, etc and I would expect these weapons to be in ArmA 3 as well. If BIS continues to rehash the same inventory, then people would continually complain for the lack of new weapons and vehicles. In an era where many games are centered around the "near future" of weaponry, not one of them has come anywhere close to being a simulator. It's all been arcade. Having a "near future" game set up more as a simulator than a game, is a risk that I applaud BIS for taking. Personally, I wouldn't have the balls to do that. Designing realistic ballistics and behaviors to items that very little data is available on can be the equivalent of standing in the frying pan and hoping nobody turns on the stove. If they can pull it off without dumbing anything down and improving the AI, then A3 could be one helluva fun and immersive release. Compared to OFP and ArmA 1, A2 and A2:OA's AI are much better and neither were dumbed down from previous releases. I do miss tank interiors from OFP, but the lack of them being there does not mean that the tanks have been dumbed down. Besides, as always, the community mods will pour forth for A3 and it will become many different genres of warfare just as the previous titles have been. The sandbox has been the best feature out of them all. I still await the day when hardware advancements could finally allow BIS and ED to make a full out flight & ground combat simulator (hell, Naval too for that matter!). Until then, I'm just glad that there's still great titles coming out for PC since I do not own, and refuse to own, a console platform of any type lol!3 points

Systems knowledge and such is nothing hard to master. Sure a couple of hard weeks to learn the majority. Just flying and operating switchology is the simple wrote memory. So what. Executing a mission as a mission commander of a 6 ship with expert skill and strategy is totally different and far more the judge of a skilled combat pilot....compared to whether or not they can do the basics such as push buttons... Even just basic mutual support as a wing-man is not easy... And yes USAF training is alot of blood in the water in some cases,....its not a school to learn how to press buttons.....You better show up to school with all this stuff down pat so that you can start the real training...... Make sense at all?? "for god's sake why do military waste money for training pilots for years, when we have these guys here?" You need to understand all this stuff you studs learn about this sim is bare minimum type stuff... This switchology is not what determines a pilot combat skill. In addition this has nothing to do with a stud who has been flying falcon for 1,000 hours either. Force tactics do not just happen because you have virtual stick time.... even if you've been gaming for 10 years..... Sincerely, "Rooster"2 points

Devil's Cross 04A In this mission the advancing Russian troops have some room to maneuver. You job is to provide some CAS support of the 1-5 CAVs orderly retreat to safer climes. Again I load up with 4 Mavs + 4 CBU-97s and a little extra fuel. The first thing you need to take care of is to watch yourself when taking off. After the F-15s take off, there will be a flight of A-10s that are preparing to land. The guy in the tower is not the brightest bulb and WILL give you clearance to takeoff AND give them clearance to land. The previous time I tried this mission I was able to take off, I heard #2 say he was rolling and he never took off. That was because while he was on his takeoff roll, the other flight of A-10s landed in front of him and somehow their wings ended up being interlocked on the runway. They didn't blow up or anything....shoulda got a screenshot :) If you cant get in the air right after the F-15s, it may be better for the A-10s to land so you can make sure the rest of your flight can get into the air safely. When you get near the CP, be careful of your position. There are a bunch of MANPADS around and a variety of rolling SAMs to cause you grief if you get too far West. I've always had problems with situational awareness in this mission so just make sure you don't get lost! Because the advancing troops have a bit more room to maneuver in this mission, they will try to flank your troops during the retreat. Attack runs on the assigned target may bring you over top of flanking tanks and other armor...make sure you are high enough that you don't take some AAA damage. After JTAC give me the first target I tell wingman to engage air defenses and second element to go after armor. (forgot to broadcast my SPI to them though :/). JTAC aborts and then I try to recall them mid attack. When JTAC gives me the third target, a ridge blocks my TGP view, needed to be a bit more north to be able to see them, send in the rest of the flight to take care of them instead. JTAC aborts on the 4th target right when I was going to take out some armor with a CBU...a SA-8 was lighting me up at the time so it may have been a good thing I broke off. He may have fired if I continued. After I broke that off, I decided to see if I could locate that SAM site and take him out. I make a mark in the direction I got the rwr warning, and was going to go south and see if I could get him to light me up again so I could triangulate....but I never got the spike. It turns out from the looking at TACVIEW, that Chevy flight took it out. When I couldnt find the SAM, I tried to use the radio call from Chevy to locate the SAMs they were calling out, but found some artillery and decided to take them out with mavs. At this time, some MiGs were showing up on the RWR, so it was time to get out of dodge and head home. Notes: I ended up getting a 64% mission score for this mission. It is virtually impossible to get a 100% on this mission. Looking at the mission in the editor and seeing the scoring for this mission. You get 50 for taking off, and 3 points each for 12 tankers and 4 HQ vehicles making it to a safe retreat zone and 2 pts for landing. Artillery will take a big chunk out of the tankers and the advancing tanks will also take out several more....this is even before you will reach the battle area. For my mission, 4 tankers were able to make it to safety. I also noticed at least one and maybe two goofs in the mission. #1 goof is that the trigger zone for the safe retreat of the vehicles is too small. You are supposed to get points if they reach the trigger zone. Problem is the vehicles will continue through the trigger zone and exit out of it. If they exit the trigger zone, the points you get will come off the board. I modified the zone size and placement so it had the same zone point, and contained the entire rest of the retreat route so the points don't come off of the board. The second goof in the mission has to do with the JTAC target assignment. There are four armor assault groups that advance on your troops. It is only scripted that JTAC can assign three of them. The fourth group is one that will attempt to flank your troops and will be allowed to advance without being called as a target. In this mission I had added a new FAC assignment for that fourth group (that was the group I was about to hit with the CBUs before they were killed off by someone else). Hopefully tomorrow night or Friday at the least I will try to get the final mission done and posted. Hopefully the new patch will be available for the weekend :)2 points

:)1 point

:thumbup:1 point

OK, I've been having a break from the old Ka-50, though it was for 2 weeks only - flown RoF so that's why. But still, got back to it again a couple days ago and found myself a bit rusty yet... yikes... but what's more important is that it's actually IMPOSSIBLE to fly the beast if you chatter away with your squadmates and pay no attention to the bugga, beginning with the preflight already... and never mind when you actually go out there looking for baddies... too much workload, too technical a machine, it really taxes you in a way a WW1 plane never will... S**T! You wanna talk about realism, man, this is as real as it gets without joining the VVS for real! Verdammt, ED, if I was a groupie I'd kiss ya all on the backside I'm telling ye :D S!1 point

Hopefully the animation will be better this time around, nothing quite breaks the immersion after you've given your squad orders to then see them run off like they have crapped themselves or moving like Thunderbirds puppets. Just give me some good missions, I don't care much for the storyline as they never put much effort into it anyway and the voice acting is awful, just play the first mission and cringe your way through the helicopter ride to the beach.1 point

Don't hear that term very often nowadays. Really a throwback to when people just created their own games because they could; didn't have to sell out to the media or large corporations; and were more concerned about how much fun they had than anyone else who would otherwise criticize them. Of course that whole statement probably made me sound like a corporation hating communist nazi rebel activist, of which I am none. But it is true to some extent. To me at least, the entertainment industry has taken a step in the wrong direction recently. I just hope that ArmA 3 remains loyal to its playerbase, as there are far too games nowadays that don't do that. And in that respect, there is some truth to what Mower said, even if he is a big bridge dwelling troll.1 point

I'd love to see a kneeboard like a few other sims have that the mission designer, pilot or simulation can fill with relevant information such as charts, pictures, mission objectives, frequencies, landing airstrip and ALA details, important comms, 9-lines, etc, etc. This would facilitate the collection and organisation of important mission information without requiring the pilot to go do so by hand, thus reducing the amount of pilot load and allowing the pilot to get into the mission faster. The option to disable this could be made available to pilots preferring the manual method.1 point

OFP never had Joystick control for aircraft, Arma had Joystick control but not multicontroller support, Arma 2 has both Joystick and multicontroller support added to that BI is currently making a helicopter sim it seems more likely that BI is going to up the FM and complexity in future sims like Arma3. As it is I find Arma2s FM for helicopters excellent for a FPS whats not upto the standard is the weapons employment and HUD although I have yet to get Operation Arrowhead it just seems to me the complexity is good but could be a bit better. Ideally for the A-10 etc Lockon level complexity is ideal if they do that it would be awesome.:thumbup:1 point

Having more complicated failures that don't necessarily mean an aborted flight would be a great way to have your cake and eat it too - the only real way to get this information would be from maintainers, and unfortunately we don't have the MTBF information (every jet is a piece of shit to us :D). As an example - failed color channels in the MFCDs, HUD out of focus, stuck OSBs, displays that blank out under Gs... the real unfortunate aspect of our current system failure setup is that many parts are either bricked or they're not. For something like the CADC, a failure in real life doesn't always mean a catastrophic loss of everything like we have now. Having more inane 'nuisance' failures make up the mainstay of them may make it more appealing than the current 'it either works or it doesn't' approach. A failure involving the TEWS pod never means that it's totally useless (though it could!), but do something instead like cause you to be unable to jam targets in the rear aspect. Or maybe your video simply doesn't work on the TEWS scope and you'll get missile indications, you'll get tones, but you won't get any RWR symbology...1 point

Correctamundo, my man. Back in the day playing IL-2 online there were certain a$$hats who used all kinds of flaps-on-a-slider and printscreen-pressing (which slows the game down) nonsense to win, and later on a certain well-known squad was caught using a god-eye radar showing all active units in a mission! So yah, cheating arsholes abound whenever and wherever they get a chance - and that unfortunately holds true as regards combat simming as well :mad:1 point

I don't like open moding either... doing texture changes etc is fine but once people get into changing parameters for weapons, engines and what not... it's gone, and nobody be fooled thinking "why would anyone want to cheat in flight sim?" Not everyone that plays them loves aircraft and respects others and wishes to do the right thing... that is for sure and that will never change.1 point

: ) Right! I bought my first this past March in Target, Bought a second for friend in April. Installed as instructed on a Win 7 platform, did patches as instructed, no problems. e.g. did not remove lomac! The price tag was cheep for testing, as I was interested in the new single A10-C release with current patches. I got the A10-C single plane package purchased online at store front, did install & patches as instructed with no problems. Great stuff, lots to learn....lol I am somewhat new to Flt Sim with my second effort @ it after CSF3 & IL2 & found this forum of great value, much appriated to all. Konkussion, as I quote you. it is in only interest in adding a local user in hopes of getting to add you to my online flight buddies, as I live just north of you in Stafford. : ) I have recently found a Warthog community which is very skilled & informative but they are just a bit overwhelming for me at the moment. I hope in a response to maybe get together some way for some help/insite as I have some new hardware .e.g. x52pro/TrackIR5 difficaulties to iron out. Sincerely, murph1 point

Not to hijack the thread but this seems to be a common theme. I think many of us that used to play flights sims in the early days switched over to the FPG and RTS genre's because they were new, easy to learn, and fun. The last few years have been nothing but rehashes of the same old thing sporting new graphics and a ton of bugs on release. Personally, I got tired of all that, came back to flight sims, and haven't played anything else since. It's awesome that we have a company like ED producing hi-fidelity simulations because very few are these days.1 point

Not sure what this means...but I certainly got back *on* the flight sim wagon. Shortly after I purchased LockOn, I easily convinced myself to ditch the $50 Thrustmaster HOTAS X for almost a grand in flight sim equipment, and I went out and acquired Black Shark and DCS A-10 through Steam as well. I plan on not playing other games for a while. I'm really just catching up on my dream career before I decided that computer science was it - being an Air Force pilot. No biggie - that dream died because I grew too tall and don't have perfect vision, but I can certainly say that the sim experience is a nice second for the real thing! Right now I'm picking up slowly so I'm sticking with LockOn: FC2 and trying to play through the campaign. Every now and then I try to jump in on multiplayer on a whim, at an odd time, but make some stupid configuration mistake (like forgetting to turn on TrackIR), and end up not really being able to take off or fully control the aircraft. I'll get more consistent eventually and will definitely feel proud when I get my first dogfight kill. Hopefully I'll have that recorded. I think you need to provide more detail about your error in order for us to help you. But as I was told before - once you have FC2, you don't need the original Lock On or FC1. Just play FC2.1 point
