Hi all, I'm new to the DCS universe but have been glued to this forum since the P-51D announcement was made. Being more interested in WWII warbirds I only know DCS for it's reputation for producing very high quality modern day aircraft simulations, and have watched some instructional videos which seem to confirm the validity of that reputation for me. Seeing such a divided response throughout this community on the announcement of the P-51 (really seems like it's 50/50), I'd like to offer an 'outsider's' point of view on ED's move and what this may mean. I believe it's a very smart move on ED's part to develop the P-51D. It allows ED to put 'their toe in the water' of the large WWII simulations market without having to commit to more than faithfully producing this aircraft. The P-51 is such a legacy of an aircraft that a lot of people will want to fly it even outside of a WWII combat context. I've read a lot of messages from community members here saying that while they wish ED had not put resources into a non-modern day aircraft, they'd still get it just to fly it. There's people who presently fly on other platforms not so interested in the combat aspects (AoA, X-Plane) who'll want to fly it due to the high fidelity it promises and come to this platform. And then there's the WWII aviation enthusiasts like myself who likes his WWII combat flying but would definitely move to this platform just to experience 'the real deal' in terms of systems and flight model, even if it was just a one off airplane from that genre that ED had produced and no WWII combat scenarios would follow. However, I do not see why (successfully) putting the toe in the water should not be followed by firmly putting a foot on the ground. All seems to be in place. A combat simulation platform. A highly qualified team. The resources of the Fighter Collection. And a market that is eager for something authentic, high quality and working. There are many ways to heaven. In the future, the dividing lines between the various aviation game developers will not be so much the time periods they are focused on, but the level of depth and autenticity versus broadness they will offer. Excellent times for people who love flight simulations! MAC3 points

My goal is to create an in cockpit training environment to help you understand the systems of the KA-50 Black Shark. I'm sorry, but these missions will only work for Black Shark 2 and appear to only work in World 1.2.0 or later at this point. These Missions have been integrated into the core game and will be found under the training menu by default instead of the old videos. *TIP* It may be necessary to hold down a button such as the ABRIS buttons for the trigger to take affect. http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/173790/ *File contains ALL current training missions* Thanks PeterP for the menu integration. **Known Issues with the missions** - The advanced ABRIS training when it asks you to input the airdrome, none of the airdromes listed in the flight manual return. They all say "not found." I have fixed this issue but I will leave this error here for the time being to ensure that it does not break something else. The fix can be found here http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/646047/ Simply extract the folder into your DCS World folder and allow it to overwrite. Now you should be able to make those RAIM calculations. The correct code for Kobuleti however is UG5X, not KBLT as the training mission states. I will be updating the training mission soon with this information. Thank you everybody for your support with these missions. Your feedback is welcome and encouraged to make these even better. In a somewhat related note, you can also view my A-10C JTAC coordinate training mission http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/99424/ *FUN FACT* Some of these missions have been downloaded over 3 thousand times! Thank you all for your support and encouragement! WARNING: If you don't want to listen to a history lesson. Stop reading here. A lesson in History? Ok, maybe not so much. I absolutely love the DCS series and I am was blown away by its complexity and beauty all at the same time when I first sat in the cockpit of the A-10 and to this day. It was my first re-introduction to the genre from many years ago. I was immediately drawn in by the training missions walking you through the various steps of the cockpit and the true depth of the simulation. But I learned it in no time because I was able to see and follow the instructors instructions step by step and move the components myself. Then I found out about Blackshark2 and was very eager to have a helicopter to compliment this amazing A-10. Sadly, there were no training instructions, only videos which I have a hard time learning from. I watched a few a few times, picked up a few of the mandatory steps, but in the end, I got her started by flipping on all the switches. My buddies would say, "How do I start this thing?" and all I could say was. "I dunno, just flip all the switches". I began asking questions on the forums here and reading about other people asking the same thing. I began to see the same thing over and over. "How do I do this?" In all honesty, I put the game down and went back to A-10. Though at the time there was a lack of missions available for the sim so I took it upon myself from my group of friends to get into the mission editor and design some missions for us to fly. While trying to teach myself the mission editor, I was dissecting the trigger system through the missions provided by ED. I began to see how the mission editor worked and then BAM!!! A stroke of genius hit me, I opened an A-10 training mission to see how it was done and realized that these same triggers and settings were available to me to use. After much more research and videos, I began creating my JTAC coordinate entry training because the forums were awash of "How do I enter the coordinates the JTAC gives me?" Once I had released that mission, I thought I could apply what I had learned to the Blackshark and set out to do just that. I watched the official videos over and over again laying out the mission verbiage and style on paper then more research to figure out how to set the triggers to see the various components of the cockpit. After many long hours of research and asking questions here on the forum, we have the missions as they are today. While I personally feel there is always room for improvement, and I am all ears, I feel these missions are complete. Each of these missions took about 20 hours each with the cold startup taking approximately 40 hours due to a lack of knowledge to complete. The Advanced ABRIS training also took about 40 hours due to the amount of information and complexity it has. In the end, I am always open for suggestions and above all else, I hope this effort has been helpful in helping new pilots get flying sooner and enjoying the game faster.1 point

You need a screwdriver and about 15 minutes. Remove the 5 screws marked with red in the image. Carefully remove the side cover, is fixed with the two tabs marked in yellow. Removing the side cover pay attention to the trigger, and spring. Remember, always springs fall and perish. The bar at the base of the joy has two anchors, top and bottom. Last image. This is the joy set in the upper anchorage. I checked the base of the joy and the hose is left long enough. Obviously, the union bar-joy now is less solid, but there is still a union firm. If you are a rude pilot, maybe not a tuning for you. Replace the cap with a single screw, connect the joy and proves that everything works properly. Then put the remaining screws. You have gained about 5 cm and more precision. In my case it's a temporary solution. I plan to use aluminum tubing for a greater extension of about 15 cm. It is a very simple work that the hose that goes down to the base of the joy only have 3 or 4 wires. Enjoy. :thumbup:1 point

Here's why I think ED will come out with a better product... Their parent company TFC owns a fully restored and flying P-51D. With access to it - the best reason why ED will release a superior product. With that said A2A may be really close, I don't know if we will see a "night & day" difference between the two.1 point

Ok, 12.1 released. And its cool - I dont need turn off crossfire everytime. Real working option "CrossfireX mode for 3D applications" in "3d application settings" - you just need notice warning: "THIS SETTING APPLIES ONLY TO USER-DEFINED APPLICATION PROFILES" - 1st I missed it, on 2nd try I saved new application - dsc.exe1 point

To be honest, I think the A2A addons are a bit overhyped. I have the B-17, the Cub and the Spitfire and while they are all nice planes they are far from the revolution a lot of people make them out to be. There's a lot of details, like the maintenance hangar for the Spit, and while I think its a fun little detail I wouldnt miss it if it wasnt there, and it doesnt really add anything to the experience of flying a Spit. I feel confident that the DCS Mustang is going to be a lot more realistic and entertaining than anything A2A can ever come up with.1 point

So... on to Day 2... Ops briefed us short on the battlefield picture, and it was all milk and honey... A beautiful sunny day to pour some on the scared and retreating Abkhazian bad-boys, nevertheless there was this strange feeling tickling my spine... Me and my brethren aligned for take-off in an orderly fashion, engines warmed up... sharp, bloodthirsty... Abkhazian bloodhirsty... :gun_smilie: And then, a split-second before I call my roll... number 2 frantically yells: "Incooomiiiing, REAR!!!" I take a fast glance, and I freeze... Some crazy Georgian SU-25 "Grach" pilot thundering over our canopies... :shocking: Turbulence shook my Hog so hard I got a Master Caution warning... Of course, nothing a subtle "onboard computer reset" couldn't iron out... We hastily plunged towards the border, our ground pounders already rolling... On arrival, scattered over the rivers, JTAC pointed to some armour coords, fangs out... None of us knew, what was actually out there... :music_whistling: And then, JTAC calls in a Tunguska and an SA-9, OMFG!?!??! Everyone, gain altitude, fast... Fly, you fools... Then another cry is heard on Victor frequency... dustbangers are gettin' rained uppon by some evil arty... I call the heavy-duty Hog to pull out, to take care of those 2K pounders, for a time of need may come... And the first thing I hear back is his cursing, popping flares & chaff already, they're byting for him... Even Tunguska spraying some paint on, she must be close... One engine shattered, number 4 was pulling out, for good... By now, we're all getting touched by the devilish S6, but none can lay sight on it... scanning the already smoking terrain... Anxiety clutching my mind, our boys are being decimated and all we can do is run & hide or - die... :helpsmilie: The SEAD flight was coming in ten minutes... The too long ten minutes... Badger group going for Gali is haywire over the radio, can't listen no more, we're going in... Our eyes are on the arty, our lives are on the dice, my last thoughts are those of a Berserker, letting his warcry out in a suicidal leap... :gun_rifle: My Mav hits them long guns, number 5 lays a cluster on my mark... Tunguska missile launch!!!:fear: And another one!!! Breaking and cramming the skies with aluminium foil, to no avail... S6 knows no forgiveness...:( A strong thud and some blackness, my sight returns... I'm spiralling down... flames, wing gone... ...Eject! Eject! Eject! Clinging from my sheet... looking at number five's burning trail in the distance... hope he managed to burst out too... Arty is gone... but so are we... And then, the corner of my eye catches some fast, white trails, ending in the spot that took our wings... Numer 2 reports Tunguska is no more on RWR... My dear SU-25s, you got here seconds too late... Ops calls in some transport planes at Gudauta to be taken care off... Number 2 pushes on, a pair of LGBs left... and what beutiful presents will they be... TGP on mark, they will never know he was there... silent, high, untouchable... Wait?! What's going on? They're rolling, bugging out... Pickle! Fast... Damn, they're speeding... GBU one...Miss!!! Second one - miss!!! Arrgh... time to pull 'em little snakes out... cause you ain't going nowhere, big boys... Nowhere!!! Number 2 hurls down, unleashing a hissing deadly little snake... Oh my God, he never saw so much flares... the Sidewinder bytes and the big ones don't even blink... Let's see what happens with a second one... There it is, one of them transports sinking, slowly... Switching to depleted uranium... getting a little closer... BWHAMOOSH!!!! But the remaining big boy is still floating, and number 2?!? He is no more... He just bought an AMRAAM to his ass by a trigger-happy F-15 flyboy... :poster_oops: -- And thus ends my little story... hope you enjoyed reading it as I enjoyed flying it... Aries OUT! :smilewink:1 point

I've spent the last few days perusing this thread at work and have been generally shocked and ashamed at some of the disrespect shown towards the devs by a few people. I would assume that DCS being the product it is would have a following of mostly mature players however many posts on this topic remind of of forums from games like WoW. Sure voice your opinion, but at least keep it respectful. Lookin forward to learning the mustang ED. Keep up the fantastic work.1 point

It is in the "doc" directory in your install folder. I think I found out why the NDBs are not visible on the map: The inner and outer beacons for a certain airport are never displayed. The ones displayed in the ABRIS are some separate NDBs that have nothing to do with inner/outer ones. My only question remaining is, why cant I find all the cities/airports in the ARBIS search...1 point

Originally posted by one of our IP's - 74th_Sloth, this post will explain all you need to know. Regards 'T' ********************************************************** I posted the below in another thread but thought it actually might be of benefit as a thread of its own to help explain things for those who are interested in the who, what where and why! Please bear in mind I'm no instructor and my way of explaining things might not be as clear or easy to understand as I'd hoped. But please read and enjoy. Apologies for inaccuracies. I'm quoting what I can remember from my own past studies. Also, apologies if this has been covered before. I haven't found a thread similar and maybe it will spark interest or resolve mis-understandings to a new wave of simmers. Enjoy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There is a lot of confusion for peeps as to what QNH, QFE, QNE and QFF settings all mean. Not sure if it's been explained before but I'll just do a quick info filler post for those new to altimeter pressure functions. Its a lot of info to take in but hopefully will ease the pain and I will summarise at the end. History -These 'Q codes' originate from days way back when. Voice radio was hard to make out clearly at times, especially on HF frequencies. The reversion back to using morse code was then required to establish a clear method of communication. These Q codes were a set of 3 letters beginning with a Q. They were set up to transmit a sentence quickly with just morsing 3 letters. The Q originally was to signify a question. QRB = What is your distance. QRC = what is your true bearing etc. As the codes developed they also incorporated statements such as QFE = Pressure at particular observation station (an airfield/port/oil rig/etc). Just out of interest, Q codes reserved for aviation use are QAA–QNZ. There are reserved sets of codes for maritime and sets used by all services. Q codes we use on a day to day basis in aviation relate to headings too, QDM, QDR, QTE, QFU and QUJ. They all have a standard meaning attached to them and allowed the old morse operators to transmit info far more quickly. I wont go into these in this thread... maybe another future thread if there is enough interest So, history lesson out the way... what do the pressure setting Q codes actually mean? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ QNH = The pressure measured at station then reduced down to mean sea level pressure. When set on your altimeter it will read your ALTITUDE. Sat on the tarmac at your airfield the altimeter will display the airfields elevation above mean sea level. This is the most commonly used pressure setting in the commercial world. Its probably the most useful setting to have, as nearly all aviation references to elevation are in relation to mean sea level. The mountain peaks on a map, airfield elevation, target elevation, minimum safe altitudes enroute etc. Incidently, QNH is given as a regional pressure setting and should be updated with new ones if you leave its area of reference into a new QNH pressure region. The QNH is the LOWEST FORECAST pressure at mean sea level for a given day to ensure that safe terrain seperation is maintained regardless of the days variation in pressure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ QFE = Is mean sea level pressure corrected for temperature, adjusted for a specific site or datum like an airfield, being the most obvious example. When this is set on your altimeter, it will read your HEIGHT not altitude. It will read zero at airfield elevation and after take off will read your HEIGHT above that specific airfield. If you fly to another airfield of different elevation and/or different QFE pressure, you will have to ensure you reset that particular airfields QFE if you want your altimeter to read zero on touchdown. QFE is very good for new pilots who are remaining in the circuit around an airfield and keeps things simple for that task. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ QFE Example: Airfield A with elevation 250ft above mean sea level. Airfield B elevation 300ft AMSL. A to B = 10miles. Assuming a uniform atmospheric pressure in the region. Take off from A, altimeter reads 0ft on runway and after take-off reads HEIGHT above airfield A. Go and land at B and your altimeter will read 50ft on the runway. This is because B's HEIGHT is 50ft higher then A. In this example, if we set the regional QNH, then the altimeter will read ALTITUDE and therefore the airfields altitude AMSL. Airfield A, altimeter will read 250ft. Airfield B will read 300ft. This is why QNH is the primary pressure setting used in aviation at lower levels. It is far simpler working in a setting that gives ALTITUDE, so you can reference your vertical position from everything on a map or chart. (All airfield plates (charts) have their altitudes AMSL on the plate.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is all good and well knowing that QNH is the best pressure setting to use in a region for vertical situational awareness. But it is not always possible to get the regional pressure setting QNH from accurate means and a reliable network of meteo stations. Remote airfields and isolated combat zones are just 2 examples where it'd be difficult to get an accurate QNH when you dont have access to good forecasts and numerous pressure sensing stations. If pressure info isn't available then you can get QFE easily by selecting an altimeter setting that reads zero on the airfield. The number in the altimeter pressure window is your QFE. To get QNH, you just need to know your elevation AMSL and set that in your altimeter. Airfield elevation = 250ft. Set altimeter to read 250ft. Pressure in the altimeter pressure window shows your QNH. (You have to remember that this wont be the lowest forecast QNH pressure for the day and just be cautious at low level. But thats why a radio altimeter is handy!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ There are 2 other Q codes used for aviation pressure settings QNE = the Internation Standard Atmosphere (ISA). It is the average mean sea level pressure around the globe. It is planet earths mean atmospheric pressure at sea level basically. This pressure setting is refered to as STANDARD in aviation. STANDARD is set from QNH when climbing up through the "Transition Level". Your altimeter will then read your FLIGHT LEVEL. A reading of 25,000ft is FL250. 5,000ft = FL050. 13,500ft = FL135. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The last one isn't really used in day to day aviation knowingly by pilots. To avoid info overload I have hidden it if you feel the above is alread a lot to digest Spoiler: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Summary QNH = Altitude (AMSL) QNE = Flight Level QFE = Height (AGL) QFF = Not used for altimeter settings In reality, QNH and STANDARD are the 2 most commonly used pressure settings. The other 2 - QFE is good for very local aerial work such as circuits at a specific airfield but not much use for wide area flight. QFF is used in meteorological weather charts. Hope this helps at least one person out there Fly fast, take risks! Happy flying! ------------------------------------------------------------------------1 point

Ciao!1 point
