Which part of Afghanistan is that. Only the south western part of the map is somewhat developed.
-
Do you have a picture?
-
They not gonna do any major changes to their plans now. They planned on the whole of Afghanistan and that's what will get. I get no performance issues in the areas that are hand made. So I would have them remove the low texture satellite stuff and replace as much of it as possible with hand made stuff.

What are the good parts of the map to see as of initial release?
Gunfreak replied to Mnemonic's topic in DCS: Afghanistan
Seems like it's mostly the area around Lashkargah. If you stray to in any direction you encounter low quality textures. Probably some of the other towns of some size is OK. -
Except they stated the South Afghanistan is feature complete. These aren't just bugs. These are either unfinished (i hope) or the best we can expect from EDs terrain engine ( at least for the foreseeable future. Unlike SA map and Kola. ED showed just the most perfect glamour shots that gave no hint that we could expect the standard low quality satellite stuff we got on south Atlantic map. They released a map were a river is the main feature, and where the majority of the fighting happen in that part of Afghanistan and most of the river and area just around it has just low quality textures and graphical artifacts. These things should have been fixed(if they can be fixed) before it was released. Because right now only a small part of the 3rd of the map released has any quality. I was looking forward doing Apache CAS and escorting Chinnocks in my Apache down Helmand river. But as it is now. If you move slightly down river from Lashkargah. All you see is low quality textures like someone use some spray cans on cardboard. And terrain geometry problems.

I haven't left the high resolution area once. That's not what people are complaining about. Just flying down Halmand river which is THE major geographical feature on the south western Afghanistan. There are terrible low resolution textures, terrible terrain geometry everywhere you look. When flying down low in a helicopter. There's actually just a few km2 of the map that looks good down low(the hand made parts) and those do look great. But just a few minutes of helicopter flying in any direction and you'll stumble across bad crap. Some of it might be fixable, some of it might not.

The difference is, we knew all along that Kola was gonna be made with satellite date. We also had plenty of pictures from Kola that clearly showed this was gonna be a South Atlantic type map. So really there shouldn't be any surprises there. Afghanistan on the other hand had just a handful of pictures and a few seconds of perfectly choreographed beauty shots in video

DCS World 2024 Screenshots and Video Thread
Gunfreak replied to MiGCap1's topic in Screenshots and Videos
Doing a double test of Air Boss station in vr and checking if the Quadview fix works(it does) -
But it's not bugs though. A lot of it is just how DCS engine is. It's exactly the same on Kola and South Atlantic map. Low quality textures. Texture meshes overlapping. And incomplete again can obviously be related to missing parts of the map.

Afghanistan was hailed by ED themselves as showcasing the best of EDs map technology. And it looks worse almost all other maps. (And that's just the high detail area) The building assets and a few of the new trees etc look good. But on the whole it looks worse then other maps. South western Afghanistan was also touted as feature complete. And so one would assume the early access parts are for the none finished parts of the map and not south western Afghanistan.

Will Afghanistan-Specific Factions be added?
Gunfreak replied to Punkmonkey22's topic in DCS: Afghanistan
They could at least add Taliban as a faction. Like it or not they were the de facto government of Afghanistan in the 90s and are it again now. -
Both Afghanistan and Chinnock could have waited several more months. We got Kola, F4, and Kiwoa in about a month. Nobody would have battend a eye if both these came in October or november. Everyone was surprised when ED said than in a couple of months Afghanistan and Chinnock will be released.
-
Don't say that om Facebook. Or they'll say you are just making drama or have a potato PC. Flying 200 feet in the Kiowa a long the Helmand river i spot bad textures and broken terrain geometry every few seconds. Along the exact places you would fly helicopter missions in a British Chinnock pr Apache. I can fly for an hour down low on Syria in the Kiwo and not spot a single terrible geometry abnormality. And the textures look good. It seems DCS has decided that they to want to only be 10 000 feet and up simulator. And for Kola at least you knew what you had in store. You knew Orbix bases their products on satellites. And we could see from promo pictures what we got. Not so with Afghanistan.

Middle Eastern Asset pack for current/future Middle East maps
Gunfreak replied to Devil 505's topic in DCS Core Wish List
I'm not talking about Afghanistan. I'm talking about the middle east 1960-1990. When the basic uniform of the armies in that area was some beige/sand colors uniform, a metal pot helmet and an AK or others soviet based weapons. Yes some nations had western arms like G3, FN FAL or even M16. However I've found that asking for "too much" from ED never works. Asking ED to make 2 infantry models that look "meh good enough" but 100 times better than using green cammoed Russians with modern optical sights. to cover the armies on Syria map, Sinai map, and Persian Gulf is mabye something ED can do. Mabye even add green uniforms to the beige. To get some variations. -
earlyaccess Quality of ground textures, poor transitions
Gunfreak replied to YoYo's topic in Bugs and Problems
These kinda graphical artifacts and low textures are so in your face in VR and ruins the immersion. Same reason I don't fly that civilian sim. -
Had to ask for a refund on Afghanistan, for a map that was supposed to come with a helicopter, it looks nothing like the trailer, everywhere I look when flying in Helmand, I see bad textures, water the seems like it defies gravity, odd graphical bugs almost wherever I look. First times I flew and looked on the map I literally thought something was wrong with my download like when my Normandy 2 upgrade didn't work and most of the map was low quality. I hope these things can be fixed, but given this looks like the standard satellite made map problems. I'm not sure this can be fixed in DCS. This is the first refund I've done. I already have 2 "only fly at 10 000 feet and above maps" in Kola and South Atlantic. I had hoped those maps showed the problem with using satellites to make maps. Not everything looks terrible, some parts with lots of houses and lots of green fields like fine. But I don't plan on flying just there.

Is Bastion and Helmand supposed to look like this?
Gunfreak replied to Gunfreak's topic in DCS: Afghanistan
They've said south West Afghanistan is mostly done. This does not look mostly done -
I stand corrected. The branches are indeed naked, there might just be too many branches, giving the feeling of lots of leafs.
-
Can someone from ED confirm that Helmand should look like this or if something is wrong? Everywhere I look there are odd graphical bugs, spiky pyramids rising up from the ground, Helmand river not connected all the way, deep square holes.
-
I've done a repair, I've uninstalled and reinstalled it. No help
-
Can't say I'm particularly impressed. In fact. I feel it looks like something is broken
-
Yes, because that's what trees look like in winter. by having dead brown leaves, the map looks much more brown and less white than it should.
-
Looks like Nevada to me. And this is all from the supposed high rez part. It looks so off. I'm thinking it might actually be something wrong with the installation of the map
-
Because to me it looks like something has gone wrong with the map install.

What's the command to install Afghanistan to the dedicated server?
Gunfreak replied to Gunfreak's topic in DCS: Afghanistan
Sorry to bother you again, but can't get it to work, I've tried using command prompt and powershell but noting happens
