Hind tempting, obviously, but what exactly are we going to do with it?
Lurker replied to AvroLanc's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
Hmmm that's interesting. I don't think I've noticed this, but I will take your word for it as I don't do a lot of ground-pounding (this will hopefully change with the Hind). Maybe increase the fragmentation damage of the rockets themselves? (at least against certain units, like infantry and lightly armored vehicles?) I think the accuracy of the rockets is fine though. Visuals can be implemented later (and are not really that important really, fragmentation damage is usually a small shower of particles and from the air can't really be seen apart from the initial impact point) -

I don't understand why fragmentation damage is so hard to implement into DCS World code? Just give certain (vulnerable) units a second invisible hitbox, that surrounds their normal hitbox at a certain range and depending on where they get hit within that invisible hitbox by fragmentation munition, they take a certain amount of damage. It's very simplistic, but it would work well enough for our purposes. Implementing frag-damage would make rocket attacks much more effective against infantry and lightly armored units, which would singlehandedly improve Helo gameplay by at least 50%. -
In my case turning SSAO on vs off, had absolutely no effect on the reflective surfaces in the cockpit. It's like it was hardcoded on. (This is on the previous patch to this one)

Oh man, they release the cloud fix patch on the day I'm gonna be so busy after work that I'm not gonna be able to fire up the sim until tomorrow, just my luck

This is in the wishlist thread. It might as well be on the moon as far as ED is concerned. I am afraid that 32 bit normal maps are here to stay. Indefinitely.

According to the last newsletter apparently they will be showing us it's piloting abilities. There was no mention of it being used as a gunner, which is why I've been a bit worried that it won't be able to do any of that on early access launch, from the newsletter: Petrovich We have finished work on the hover flight mode for the Petrovich command and lateral and vertical movements using this system. The latency in command reception by Petrovich is in progress, and it will mimic the real life crew lag when communicating and processing information. In the next update, we will share details on Petrovich flight modes and how to use it in combat.
-
I assume there will be some sort of communication between the AI Petrovich (as the gunner) and the player in the back-seat. Something along the lines of "Target spotted at 11 o clock, MBT, Comrade!" and then you will be able to give the command to shoot, hold fire, or whatever via a radial menu (similar to Jester).

So why would you wan't them to nerf this very important part of the sim? So that other people can't enjoy it the way it was meant to be flown? Don't you think that's a bit selfish?

There are a whole lot of people (according the Eagle Dynamics a majority of people) who never play multiplayer. I think it would be extremely unfair of Eagle Dynamics (or anyone else for that matter) to scam these people into buying a two-person module, that can't effectively be operated by one person. I have no idea why you feel this way, maybe you think that the AI will be able to do this task better than a real person, maybe you are an online-only guy who doesn't want any kind of AI messing up his and his team-mates' experience in the game. In any case, you will be able to disable the AI (or limit it to very basic tasks) on your multiplayer servers, this has already been confirmed by Eagle Dynamics so you don't have to worry. You don't have to play with us "cheaters" if you don't want to.

Hind tempting, obviously, but what exactly are we going to do with it?
Lurker replied to AvroLanc's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
Well I hope I will be able to use it in multiplayer, with a friend or with an AI gunner, so I can engage FARP defenses (and possibly land a small squad of troops to capture FARPs\Airfields). I mean I do that with the Huey and Mi8 already and it's a blast, when I don't get shot down. Well, it's a blast when I get shot down as well, but a different kind of blast... I think as long as the mission designers take the limitations of DCS and the helicopter itself into the equation it will "kind of" do it's job. I say kind of, because obviously a new level of ground modeling, weapon damage modeling and AI and unit interaction is required for this chopper (or any chopper really) to really shine in DCS World. -

Television Camera Set lock on when radar is off and slaved to TCS
Lurker replied to Slice313's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
What about if the radar is in standby? (For the mad-dog PH launches?) So the Heatblur implementation is incorrect? It should not be possible to launch Phoenixes if you've cycled the radar to standbye mode, even with the ACM cover up? -
I guess we'll see soon enough. I am really going to hate switching seats, in the Hind. Not only is it immersion breaking, it's a whole lot of extra workload for a single operator, which would make using it in single-player a real pain until they implement proper AI. Hopefully the multicrew part will work out of the box, so I can train with a friend at least. *sigh*

Yeah, the weird wording of EDs "press" releases, basically what Gierasimov said. Also the strange absence of any "new" AI information, other than the brief blurbs regarding it's hover and movement abilities, despite the imminent release of the Hind makes me believe that this is as far as they've come with the AI. Still, it's nothing concrete.

Anyone else slightly worried that Petrovich AI won't be able to employ the ATGM AT missiles, at least initially on EA release? Hopefully I'm wrong about this.

Television Camera Set lock on when radar is off and slaved to TCS
Lurker replied to Slice313's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
This is incorrect behavior and should not work with any FOX1 missiles. It is possible that you launched the Aim54 with the radar off, in that case it launched in Active Fox3 mode, and guided to the first thing it's seeker sees. (So the radar being off or on, didn't matter) Are you flying solo or with Jester? AFAIK Jester will not lock to anything with the TCS unless it's slaved to the radar. You need a human RIO to lock anything with the TCS with the Radar off. (At least so I've been told, I might be wrong about this) -
Television Camera Set lock on when radar is off and slaved to TCS
Lurker replied to Slice313's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
You can lock with just the TCS if you know where to look. (Or rather your RIO can). However you can't launch a FOX 1 with the radar off. That's not how it works. The TCS can be slaved to radar, I don't know if it can even work the other way around. In any case, FOX1 launches on the TCS lock without a radar lock are a no-go. What you can do is get a slave TCS lock, then turn off the radar, sneak up on the enemy and then launch a Phoenix with the ACM cover up (hot-off the rail). Should do the trick. -
That's weird. Nothing about it in the patch notes. Will have to fire up the game and check it out I guess

Are you using NVGs in the night mission?

Pilot body in VR - most underestimated feature in VR or useless?
Lurker replied to Rosebud47's topic in Virtual Reality
It's very subjective I think. I don't care about it one way or the other. I might even disable it, if it will save me a frame or two. On the other hand, if they added some really great controller support where my pilot actually moved his VR hands and could hit switches (as I moved my controls around) without using that stupid finger-laser pointer, now that would be something I would find really interesting. -
Hind Controls, Collective and RPM Control/Throttle
Lurker replied to Czechnology's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
I think that the famed stability of the Mi-24 is what defines it's flight model, it was a very stable gun platform, with no actual crabbing. It should fly quite different to the Mi8. It should also be very enjoyable, as RL pilots have stated that one of the main reasons they like the Mi-24 is it's incredible stability. However, there is the fact that they both use the exact same powerplants and are both quite heavy when fully laden, and one of the main things I like about the Mi8 is the "feeling" of inertia in the helicopter. With all of that said, while the Mi-24 is indeed more suited for running attacks rather than hovering attacks, we should put this myth to rest that it couldn't do hovering attacks. It should be able to do them just fine, the question remains will you wan't to do them based on the weapons loadout that you carry into battle? -
I doubt the D would be implemented (and seriously doubt if it would be a good choice to develop anyway), as it was mostly an experimental upgrade, that was rather poorly thought out and implemented and caused more headaches than it solved problems. This is why the "D" was discontinued and was ultimately withdrawn form service.

The horror stories about setting up the G2 and WMR are putting me off on getting one. Even though it's probably the best VR headset available currently.

It shouldn't really matter. For example, if you are testing "weights" it doesn't matter if you use stone-age scales, or high tech, high precision digital scales. As long as everyone who does the tests agrees on the SINGLE AGREED METHOD of testing. In my really ridiculous example, as long as everyone agrees to use the same types of scales then this is what matters. From my (limited) physics background this is the basics of any testing methodology.

I am vaguely familiar with the HUD from the Su-25, it's simple and just works. Point, and shoot. What more do you need?
