Well actually I notice it more now since motion smoothing. Trouble is can't use MS on modules like the spitfire, or I can but its distracting especially on heavy missions. But having tried MS its kinda spoiled me and makes the default reprojection a little more noticible. But you're right it all tends to melt away in dogfights! Gonna use motion smoothing from now on even in spits though, and just roleplay thats the effect a propeller and gunsight combined with the heat from the engines create! Also mapped gunsight control to my flight stick so it can be turned on and off in battle, as as you say in battle it matters little.

How to remove units for VR performance?
Wolf8312 replied to Wolf8312's topic in Spitfire LF Mk.IX The Big Show Campaign
Never mind not F10, its coms menu and then F10 followed by other, and from there enable. -
So why did they choose K model if they knew it wasn't in the right setting. To be clear I don't give a fig if it's historically accurate or not, I'd just treat it like a 109 and it wouldnt break immersion in the slightest, but still I know a large proportion of WW2 simmers are strongly opposed to aircrafts flying in the wrong places. Is it a very old module or something created back before the WW2 theatre was even a thing?

Motion smoothing is actually really good almost flawless fluidity fo helis and jets. Normandy though in planes such as the spit, flying on the epsom campaign, I think you would find difficult to ignore! Prop artifacts to the point where it feels as if you are underwater! Normandy really needs alot more effort put into it. Looks awful close to the ground, and the performance is much worse than downtown las vegas!

Really only after about a year did I stop messing around with settings, and began to accept the limitations of VR/DCS performance. Thats not something a guide can teach and, no matter what I tell you, I doubt very much, you will be able to stop yourself tinkering! First thing to accept is that alot of the SP experience will be off limits to you as a VR user, as many missions are just too intensive, or badly designed/optimized for VR. A massive FPS drop in VR will not go unnoticed! DCS has all sorts of performance problems in VR, certain bombs, crashes, pilot ejects, assets loading in from triggers, and aspects of the damage model, and weather/clouds, often cause these undesirable FPS drops. With all that said, DCS is still my favorite flight simulator in VR, even for WW2. One thing to remember is that the mission editor is your friend. All of the problems above can largely be mitigated, by editing or creating your own missions, by for example removing clouds or using dynamic weather settings. If you try to play missions designed for 2D users, not built with VR in mind you'll probably find it a frustrating experience. Main things to focus on are MSSA, and pixel density, both will make the game look better, and both will more than any other settings (although leave things like V sync off) affect performance. MSSA makes things in the distance look smoother and less jaggie/terrible. Pixel density will make things look clearer and easier to see up close, but won't really help much with disant jaggies. Personally I prefer MSSA over pixel density but YMMV, and it's probably module dependent too. MSSA and PD together is not really a good idea, best to choose one over the other IMO. I personally think MSSA 2 is about as far as one should go unless... ...using motion smoothing and flying things like jets. MS is not really a realistic option in certain modules such as the WW2 birds, and to a lesser (IMO) extent helicopters because they create too many visual artifacts. But in Jets depending upon your system, thanks to MS, you can really get away with cranking the PD or MSSA up higher. This will not help with occasional large FPS drops (described above) however though, so if like me you might find yourself still tending to design your own missions. High or low graphics textures/terrain doesnt really make much of a difference. Water- be sure to set to at least medium otherwise the water will flash strange colors (low is a no go) Vsync-off Everything else set to off It will be difficult but try to focus on the flying and fighting more than the graphics. I recommend MSSA x2 and PD of 1.0 (see my specs), there isn't really much to it other than that. All other options either dont do much, or should be left off. Those settings are actually rather on the low side for my PC I think, but within the limitations of the missions I make/edit performance is smooth (even without MS) and for me that is the most important thing. Overclocking might help, but to be honest I stopped doing it after a while as it won't get you out of reprojection, so it might just be of more benefit to run a cooler PC. Again though you can drive yourself insane with the tinkering and some people have perfectionist rather OCD personalties that will not be suited to VR in its present incarnation. I find myself much happier now having accepted and understood the limitations of VR/DCS. Just enjoy the flying/fighting, and whether limited in graphics or mission content, be grateful for how lucky you are rather than fixating on what you wish you had.

Fantastic for jets no question. Prop planes though its too distracting, but I think some planes like the Bf 109 are unaffected. Have to say wish I could use it with modules like the spitfire, cause it is so damned smooth! Helicopters seem to work well I think, though there are some artifacts that may get annoying after a while. What a shame that motion smoothing's kryptonite are things that spin, and I am in love with flying WW2 prop planes! Gonna have to learn some of the jets I think!

Pixel density vs MSAA vs supersampling: mid-level GPU
Wolf8312 replied to DeltaMike's topic in Virtual Reality
What kind of missions do you guys play with VR? Multiplayer, design your own SP? Do you not find the campaign DCS SP content to be too taxing generally? I want to play the epsom and WW2 campaigns but when the flak opens up it gets way too stuttery, and basically theres just too many units! Looks like an amazing campaign so it really pains me! Damned shame the people who design these missions don't take VR users into consideration but I get we are a very small propotion of the sim's base. Anyone know of, or have any WW2 missions to share, that work well in VR? I can make my own but its too predictable to play ones own missions all the time, and I don't have much time to make them anyway. I do not need much, I'm happy basically with fly up, out and engage, and then fly back, with maybe a bit of ground attack potential. One thing I have noticed in VR as well that missions must have all assets loaded into them at mission start, otherwise there will be nasty stutters and FPS drops when these assets load in mid mission. With DCS thats probably good advice for all user with the MB anyway I suppose... -

I think pretty high (8-16) as it doesn't have much of an impact. Doesn't make much of a difference sadly either! -

Unfortunately with VR we are all mid-level GPU's! -

Yes I have found the same. Mixing PD with MSSA at any level is not a good idea. 2X MSSA, 1.0 PD, is about as good as balance as I can find peformance wise. 4x MSSA looks nicer obviously but not worth performance hit with larger engagements. Still can't realistically fly epsom campain or anything on that scale, but can actually have a smooth experience when there are alot of planes around. With MSSA PD off, it runs great but looks bad, really wish I could ignore it. -
How do I 'apply the magnetic variation' ?
-
Very smooth with motion smoothing off so long as you have realistic graphics settings, and don't try to fly missions that are too demanding. Wouldn't say motion smoothing has been a bust though as it works great for me with jets.

I get the flickering ocean, drives me mad especially on normandy.

How to contact ground control with radio
Wolf8312 replied to Wolf8312's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
I think it does it automatically saying- Im up with eight spits- and they respond by saying something like- continue as briefed. -
1st epsom mission the mission breifing tell ms me to contact ground control on chanel D. Well, the radio (push to talk) is working but how do I contact ground control to tell them I am airborne? The list of options is like wingman, navigation, ground crew (but thats just electrical power etc) second element and things like that. Not sure how to report I am airborne... Many thanks
-
One thing about voice attack. When I say 'wingman' or 'engage' my pilot says engage, so it's as if I have two voices if you know what I mean/ Anyone know of anyway to make it so I can say engage, and there is a simple 'copy' response? Perhaps a mod or something?

This is where the new modem generation of flight sticks such as the virpil and the VKB will really show their worth. It’s as if my Virpil was actually designed for the spitfire and both sim, and stick, with their mutual hypersensitivity compliment each other amazingly.

I fly WW2 planes on all and any map and still feel immersed in WW2 when doing so. Maybe the Nevada desert doesent look anything like the deserts of Africa, and Africa has no such terrain, but it works for me as I refuse to research the matter! There really should be the ability to turn off modern city buildings though. The option to do this in the ME simply does not work for some reason. I love the WW2 modules in DCS. It fast became my favorite WW2 sim, not only because it's so much more challenging to, take off, fly, land and kill, but also just because of how the modules feel. I'm sure a VR and jetseat combination plays a big part in this, but after flying DCS modules, other sim WW2 planes feel so much more simplified. When you finally nail landing the spitfire for example, you genuinely feel as if you have achieved the ability to fly, and land the actual plane, whereas other sims feel more arcade-ish. More so than other than other sims, the experience is strongly reminiscent of learning to drive. It takes a rather long time to master, but once it clicks, it becomes something you just have a mental, and physical feel for, and you wonder how before you could ever have found it so difficult! The more complex and comprehensive modules, also give me a much stronger feeling of ownership/historical sentimentality over the planes themselves. The spitfire is the single greatest WW2 module I have ever tried, but all of them feel dinstinctive, and are very convincing simulations of the real thing. After learning the DCS modules I find it hard to go back, to other simulators, because I love them so much! The spitfire feels like my plane! I find getting spits in the 109 and 190 so much more challenging than taking 109's/190's in the spitfire, but killing 109's/190's in the p-51 is really challenging! Really have to learn B and Z better I think! The other day I took off in a squad of 4 (AI) P-51's up against 4 109's. I looked around and found that not one single P51 had survived and I was up against 4 109's! You can imagine how that went! So I love ww2 DCS although it obviously has room for improvement. Need airport sirens and searchlights, and better allied AA to mention just a few things. More bombers to fight as well obviously.

Not much improvement that I've noticed. Really wish they would improve the visual quality of the trees in normandy and do away with the luminous green vomit color. Looks awful close to the ground and all they would have to do for a vast improvement is make them darker. I just flew a spitfire mission and shot down 3 enemy planes and landed perfectly. Felt wonderful, I even enjoy it more than the other sim nowdays, and performance is as good or about the same (although horrible stutters first time a pilot ejects). I know my limitations with DCS, I keep my settings low, PD is down to 1.0 and MSSA on 2.0 I think, which makes it a vastly better experience. I also dont fly crazy missions, chok full of assets, of the kind a 2D user can. I also use the shader mod. I think the main thing is that it now looks better with lower graphics settings, although maybe I just am imagining it and now have lower standards. The main test of performance is how the game peforms in a dogfight and I have to say its pretty damned smooth even without motion smoothing on, which overall because of artifacts has proven to be a bit dissapointing. Actually I should just turn MSSA off as it looks fine up in the air, but down low is pretty unbearable especially on a map such as normandy. Gah those trees! Got the feeling the devs having announced VR improvements are confident enough that there is something worth getting our hopes up about! But seriously fix normandy trees!
-
To be honest much prefer how it is now, than how it used to be with awful washed out graphics. Guess its just personal preference, but I agree it is a bit garish especially normandy. For the love of god fix those luminous green trees! Normandy is great but even in the screen shots, I don't know what they were thinking with the colors, especially of trees and buildings.
-
Not sure I have noticed any visual problems with that mod. I hope it will be something even better too, but I would still take the mod if not. The performance is vastly better and it would mean I wouldn't have to constantly load it all up again every time there is an update!
-
Yeah I'll never sign on to that system over a HOTAS. Doesen't feel in the least bit immersive, or as if you are using your own hands, at present but simply a less accurate version of a mouse. Theres also the problem that there is no haptic feedback and you can not actually see your own hands. If using hands to press buttons, it will be very immersion breaking not to be able to see or feel them. Will wait until there are special gloves for this kind of thing, cause even if accurate, I'll never replace my HOTAS for motion controllers!

Dunno I wasn't paying attention to be honest and cant remember which version it was exactly might have just been an old one I missed. Though it must be reasonably recent. Havent tried it yet though...

Im guessing then that that is not the update I am presently downloading?
