Like I said its running as it was on my original VIVE but basically have to put it down to the same resolution! I'm not really using the headset to it's full capability but that's okay as I never expected to be able to. It's fine at 100% SS if the missions are not too taxing. It has other things going for it rather than just the resolution upgrade. Even if I was using a new card with a higher resolution though I'd probably still be about where I am now performance wise though with the better graphics/resolution. At least that is what I suspect! Maybe others can tell me if this nut has indeed been cracked and its now a constant 90fps (for the entire SP/MP experience) using some of the newer cards/CPUs? Trouble is it's hard to make informed decisions about these things because everyone who gets a new card will swear it's 'butter smooth now' though will a while later buy a new card swearing that no this is the one, it's really butter smooth now! VR/DCS and GPU upgrades is kinda like the infinite halfway theory where one is perpetually walking halfway towards his destination but never actually getting there! The 2080 series didn't really impress me at all to be honest, but I'm hearing good things about the 3090 in regards to VR/DCS though still very skeptical it will be the magic bullet! I know from experience that if it is not flawless, over time and when the initial joy wears off a little, one will find himself wishing for more and being niggled by the imperfections! I am going to upgrade at some point but I'm not sure the hardware yet exists to solve this DCS/VR problem. It seems to be a limitation of the game engine itself and as the headsets improve graphically the performance decreases and so we are back to where we started! So would a 3090 really solve all the problems and provide a constant 90? I think I'm holding out for the next generations T series, but even then I really lack confidence that it will be the solution.

Yeah I can basically get it running as good as it was on my orginal VIVE though only by dropping it down to the same resolution and 90htz. Wasn't expecting any different to be honest and I only use DCS for limited engagements and missions that I have made myself as multiplayer or large-scale missions have never worked well. Don't even bother frustrating myself with them. Much better comfort/headphones and SDE though so I'm pretty happy with it. Also ordered a buttkicker Gamer 2. It is best not to expect too much with DCS. I'd honestly be happy enough if they just improved the AI, cause for me its enough just to be able to fly and fight on a limited scale. But when the AI gets too easy I get bored! Helicopters always have much better performance in VR (not nearly as much head movements). I've heard good things about the 3090 for DCS because of the VRAM? Might look into it but I'm probably going to hold off for a while. In my experience a new card feels better for a while but if it isn't perfect and things like MP and the full SP experience are still not flawless it probably won't be worth it. When I first started I never even noticed reprojection! Thinking about getting that star wars game too. I'm not going to invest any more money in DCS for a while now (might get Syria) not until there are performance improvements. Thanks for the reply as well mate!

The answer is pretty awful so far performance wise! Not sure if thats the index or DCS.
-
Was a no brainer for me really as I have the basestations for the orginal VIVE and didn't care too much about the controllers so was happy to just get the headset itself. Just wondering from anyone who else has an Index, how's the performance? To be honest I'm rather relaxed about it as I know what to expect with VR so it's not like I can't sleep with excitement but does the jump in image quality come at the cost of performace? Does it look/perform better maybe or is the performance terrible in DCS? How does a higher refresh rate affect the experience? I've heard it makes things seem more real/solid? Anyway I guess I'll see in a few days time.

My Vive had an accident and got cracked so I haven't played VR for a long time, and am mulling an upgrade to the index. Only thing is it would mainly be for DCS and flightsims, but I kinda got bored with DCS as the performance never allowed me to have the full single player experience (especially WW2 campaigns) without poor performance. The campaigns seem so great that playing them before the technology is ready almost seems as if it will spoil the surprise really! So I don't really think theres any rush to upgrade until there are some genuine breakthroughs as flying my own missions against that AI got very old in the end. I would still do it, but I'm not sure its worth the expense right now, as its not as if I will be as blown away as I once was, though I do really miss it sometimes... Don't have much confidence that a new GPU will change matters much either... So did the performance upgrades ever pan out, or has the AI (especially german fighter AI was basically unplayable) been improved recently improving the SP experience so I can make better missions? There's only so long one can fight that AI in limited engagements before wishing for something more (MP or a real SP campaign against a challenging AI).

I'm deciding to pack VR up as well for now. Its always one step forward then two steps back. Might as well wait till DCS and VR are a little further along. I was kinda getting bored, of being locked out (due to performance issues) of so many of the SP missions anyway. I kinda just want to wait until it is actually ready and then fire up some of those Normandy missions! I do know it is going to be epic... eventually!

Are we not getting updates anymore maybe cause of COVID 19 or something? Seems like ages since we had one, and like others I am not flying DCS any more because of bad VR performance. Don't want to revert back either cause there was one update/install somewhere recently that corrupted everything and I had to reinstall (which as always means remapping axis controls!). Any ideas when we'll get an update?

[REPORTED] Very low detail areas in Normandy
Wolf8312 replied to Reflected's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Yeah its a bad place to have this happen. The battle of Britain mission is fooking brilliant immersion wise in VR, but the terrain problem is a noticeable detraction/distraction! -
Is there an updated beta version of Normandy map?
Wolf8312 replied to motoadve's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
Want to also express my appreciation! Its like a new experience now in VR, and performance with MS is incredible. The modules are just so fantastic to fly when it is smooth performance wise, and it is so incredible looking in VR and it captures Normandy and WW2 so perfectly. Hard to put into words what I actually feel when flying ineffable almost, but it justifies the expense of my whole setup each time I take off! I still find it hard to fly anything else, but when the wrinkles are ironed out, DCS WW2 will be unbeatable, because the core modules themselves are so above and beyond anything else on the market. Just seemingly little details that in truth make the difference between arcade and simulation, and make a huge difference in VR. Jetseat support is also a massive plus! -
Mine was awful last night. Updated nvidia drivers and probably as good, or better than its ever been today, because of the new update, and no prop artifacts with motion smoothing. Still I'll give it a try later again to be sure! Normandy in VR as well! Wow! Fantastic! I'm on the vive though so this may just do nothing but serve to annoy you!
-
The thing with hand tracking is I suspect if its not perfect it will probably be more immersion breaking than its worth, and I can't imagine we are anywhere close to perfection yet! It will really need to feel as if you are truly interacting with the AC or else will probably be inferior to just clicking buttons on the HOTAS while glancing elsewhere, or issuing commands via voice attack/to my copilot. I won't be investing until I hear people raving about it!
-
I will say one thing against VR. It does automatically mean a lot of the game will be off limits due to bad performance which fluctuates from update to update. For instance, I want to fly my spit on 'The Big Show' or the other campaigns but the performance is just not good enough. Trouble is once you've gone to VR for many people there's no going back. But I really do sometimes wish that VR performance was better, so I could fly some of the wonderful campaigns. Multiplayer is awful performance wise (if the servers even show up) too, so when I do fly VR, it's always on very limited missions that I have designed myself, which has gotten a bit old after a few years... Another big problem for WW2 is the AI which means some of the plane's basically don't work correctly but that's another gripe for another section of the forum. Personally do think the developers should make AI a priority. Performance is not something I don't feel I have any right to demand because VR is very niche. But an AI that one cannot escape from at full throttle in a 190 after a vertical swoop down onto the target which happens to be an obsolete I-16? Nah that needs to be adressed ASAP!
-
Did you have it mounted on the wall above you? I only use one for seated games and can honestly say I've never needed the second.

Which WW2 plane and campaign to start with?
Wolf8312 replied to unlikely_spider's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I am SP only too (VR) and yes it is pretty much impossible to beat or escape the AI even using boom and Zoom as one should. Even I-16s catch me my having swooped down from a massive alt advantage at full throttle. -
Which WW2 plane and campaign to start with?
Wolf8312 replied to unlikely_spider's topic in Western Europe 1944-1945
I would avoid the Fw190's. Truth is against the present AI even with a massive altitude advantage over your opponent it is almost possible to escape from allied planes if you miss your first pass. Makes for a frustrating experience and I don't feel such modules should be supported until this problem is addressed. 109 is less bad AI wise, and the spitfire has no such problems. -
[REPORTED]Performance degradation with the last two beta updates
Wolf8312 replied to RealDCSpilot's topic in VR Bugs
Honestly why I won't be upgrading to any of the new headsets and think the rift S would be the best choice if I did. Game is on the very edge of good/poor performance with DCS even on the original Vive, and thats not talking about heavy missions. To push up the resoultion would be similar to bumping up SS, and I already know that with MSSA on 4, that any higher than 2 SS degrades performance significantly. -
Ha I'm certainly not in that catagory! I built my HOTAS and pedal system up bit by bit, and although expensive relatively speaking, it's actually quite cheap when compared to something like a family car or a house. Same with VR, I soon got over it! Had my second break recently Don, onto my third and final now. I did press down too hard on the second trigger (first not so much) but I still consider it a flaw, as sometimes I just cannot control myself in the heat of battle. It's a fantastic flip down trigger that feels very bad ass, but the mongoose has the opposite problem as the warthog, sturdy innards and weak externals. Probably wont replace it once the third one breaks, as it would be too much trouble, and probably best to get used to flying without it.
-
Never had any trouble with my mongoose except for 2 plastic triggers snapping in the heat of battle (plastic triggers are a bad idea). But I do agree if the product is not working out of the box, then I would expect a replacement rather than it to be fixed and sent back to me. It's basically like receiving a second hand product in my opinion, and in my mind one that would more likely to break a second time in the same way. There's alot of DIY involved with these units though, so I imagine they do get alot of people breaking things and then claiming it arrived broken which probably eats away at small business like theirs.
-
Hum another reason against getting the reverb then. I generally only play DCS at sunset or around sunrise because I can't stand VR looking all overly exposed and washed out! Don't need a HMD adding to the problem. Can't believe they havent adressed this problem with the new headsets though, and provided a way to alter the brightness...it can really be the difference between a very realistic feeling experience, and something that looks almost too bad to endure...
-
I dunno man. All I know is this sim has support for the jetseat, whereas an other sims developers steadfastly refuse to support it, or it's developers.
-
I do also want better labels. Actually it isn't lables I want exactly I just want the dots to be magnified and devoid of any color (just black) so I can see at a distance where everything is without it being so immersion breaking. They should I think try to resemble the general shape of an AC as oppose to a square block or arrow. Would also be great if allies could be shaded slightly darker, than axis or vice versa! Lables are horrible to use in VR and when turned on they also accentuate reprojections slight stuttery effect from time to time.
-
Would never give up my HOTAS and am realistic enough to know that a haptic glove technolgy that has the nimbleness and dexterity to work well in a DCS AC is a few years off yet! I do think DCS devs deserve credit for listening to the community. They do seem to add things to the sim such as jetseat and VR support -with ongoing and patently obvious efforts to improve it- which suggest to me that they do so not only for their customers, but because they too, are aiming to create a combat simulation as close to the real thing as possible. Just landed my spit. When I am in that thing with VR, and a jetseat, I can't really convey to you all how convincing and wonderful it feels, what a truly beautiful thing it is to be able to fly it. DCS/VR is not perfection just yet but its pretty damned close! Without any intention of being a crawling kiss ass here, I am truly and honestly very grateful to the DCS developers for having included VR (and jetseat) support, and their constant efforts to improve it, something they were under no obligation whatsoever to do, and something that they must feel is more trouble than it is worth sometimes! But again I'm sure they do so because they want VR as much as we do, believe wholeheartedly that it is the future of flight simulation, and therefore are making every effort to perfect it, to the extent that we all hope and want it to be perfected. Besides if it was perfect now, we'd have nothing left to look forward to! :)

Which VR Headset Did You Own Or Are You Buying This Year?
Wolf8312 replied to Secoda's topic in Virtual Reality
Interest in the index is not low. It's probably the best VR headset out there. But I think many of the people who bought into gen 1 VR, and are now looking for a new headset have come to realize that VR for the moment is best as a sit down, sim experience, so many of the extra comforts and improvements of the index are surplus to requirements. For the price they are asking it's just not worth it, although as I already have the basestations I am wondering if I wait a while, how much I will be able to pick one up for. I personally am probably not going to change from the standard VIVE just yet. If I even put PD up from 1.2 to 1.3 I feel it with my present settings, so I can only imagine what upgrading to a reverb would do to my performance... -
Yeah and it might sound silly but don't discount the benefits of a jetseat and a large airconditioner blowing across your body! In VR feeling the cold wind combined with the weather effects of the game itself just seems to lend itself to a greater feeling of presence. It's also vital in itself if you live somewhere hot!

I'm now using cockpit shadows having avoided them in the past. They don't seem to be taxing my performance in any way really though I do seem to rememeber them playing havoc when I used them with B17's for some reason, and I haven't checked that out. Shadows are fantastic in VR though for realism. It isn't just the shadows per say, but the lighting and relflections they prouduce especially when flying near dusk or dawn. It often isn't so much what they allow you to see, but what they conceal. They make the cockpits look much nicer, not only because they look more realistic, but because things are not so washed out, and exposed, which is especially important in modules such as the Anton which looks pretty garish in VR without shadows and too much exposure presently. It is harder to see things sometimes though, so I have to make sure important buttons are mapped to my HOTAS and memorized, but I am mainly into WW2 and helicopters anyway! One reason I always avoided shadows was I knew they would be hard to play without having experienced them, and I do feel I can't go back now! I made one airport attack mission which I fly up to in the 109, starting at sunrise. It looks so damned beautiful that mission in VR with, heavy weather, and that early morning lighting, combined with the effects of the shadows. You gotta work with what you have, and I'd recommend making smaller contained missions, at the right time of day to make things as realistic and atmospheric as possible. I am using a standard vive but I think people would be amazed by how truly realistic it all looks/feels when you create missions with VR/performance, and realism in mind.
