Thoughts about missions / Campaigns / Scenarios
Volator replied to markturner1960's topic in DCS: Cold War Germany
Our squadron will use the several realistic airbases, airspaces and ranges on the CWG map to simulate realistic training flights. VFR and IFR navigation day and night, A2A in the TRAs, A2G on the ranges, some tango scrambles. We will also simulate EW training by recreating the Polygone Range in SW Germany. Also, some large-scale exercises like REFORGER and TLP with other squadrons, all in the correct and realistic training manner. We also have another project in the pipeline focussing more on the ground war and Army Aviation, and that will surely include Combined Arms a lot. There's also plenty of room for some (in this sim) soothing helicopter border-patrol flights on both sides of the fence if one doesn't like the doomsday scenario of WWIII. In our squadron we will not simulate WWIII. But there'll surely be a lot of all-out WWIII scenarios with a plethora of military cross-border missions carried out. The biggest advantage of this map is that it offers a lot of information on real-world airspaces, controlling agencies, frequencies and everything; there are tons of charts available (even if we have to dig a little bit in the archives for many bases). It is similar to NTTR in this regard, but offers a lot more airbases and a much more interesting scenery. -
Freiburg will be in in phase 3, that was a French ALAT base back in the Cold War. https://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/freiburg-airfield.html

Please consider adding Wittmund EDNT, Jever EDNJ, Oldenburg EDNO in phase 3. (Adding the civil airfield Wilhelmshaven EDWI would be a nice cherry on top, it's the largest civil aerodrome in the area and regularly saw GAF C-160 Transall practising short-field landings and takeoffs. Nowadays every now and then the occasional GNY Sea Lynx from ETMN Nordholz stops by)

@Flappie @BIGNEWY Tried multicrew in the Huey today after a few years, and unfortunately it is still not very good compared to newer modules. The most apparent bug was the start-up when my pilot started up the aircraft. He set up the aircraft, but the switch for the fuel pump wasn't synchronised. Only when I as the co-pilot also switched on the fuel pump, the engine would start. There were also some issues with the external lights not being synched, and later in the flight my pilot couldn't open his door while it visually opened for me. Track included (on Kola map, sorry, it was after all a simple multiplayer flight and not a dedicated bug-hunting flight, and naturally, the file is super-big. Hope it helps you guys. Is there a chance ED will bring Huey multicrew to a level that is comparable to the Apache? I heard MC works pretty well there, also with the F-14 and F-4 (but those are not ED modules, so...) 6_Kola_1980s_V005_2025-04-15_heli_test_002-20250415-200037.trk

Flappie, time for another bump

Cold start: Torque rises when applying fuel flow lever
Volator replied to Usagi's topic in SA-342M Gazelle
I once had an EGT runaway condition when I moved the throttle too fast; I think the Gazelle simulates engine damage (I once experienced it due to dust and no filter), so you might want to be careful with that technique -
I can only imagine the TACANs and ILS' we've seen in the screenshots are some stand-ins and do not resemble the final product. It's hard to believe that Ugra goes all the way with this map and then in the end doesn't add era- and coalition-correct navaids. They certainly must now better, right? Having TACANs and instead of RSBN and PRMG in East Germany would be a major turn-off... I hope Ugra will adress this issue. I trust in them they will.

Of course. I was referring to what we have in DCS right now, which is similar to the pre-ICE F-4F.

Correct. AIM-9L from 1983 onwards till the end. (And never ever any AIM-7! Sidewinders only.)

Cold start: Torque rises when applying fuel flow lever
Volator replied to Usagi's topic in SA-342M Gazelle
@Usagi So I checked the torque issue on cold start and did not experience what you are describing. Torque went up to 50% max during engine run-up, see track attached. This is the way. SA-342_torque_test.trk -
All of them. You can do whatever you like. If you want to fly historically correct and authentic, it will mostly be training flights (VFR/IFR Nav, A2A, A2G), some recon flights and the occasional alpha scramble to intercept a bogey that is heading for the border, all flights on your side of the fence only, but that promises a lot of fun and great realism.

I experienced this on an MP server with a boom KC-135. While on the boom the Tanker banked left and right, and it even went off the assigned track by a few degrees. That is new, I've never seen that before. No track due to very long multiplayer session with 40+ participants.

According to the screenshots of Frankfurt EDDF it's rather a very early 1980s map.

@MAESTR0 If possible, please consider adding Rotenburg-Wümme (EDCR during Cold War, nowadays EDXQ) east of Bremen EDDW. It was a German Army Aviation base back in the day and home to a squadron of Alouette II liaison and recon helicopters (and Do-27 in the early days of German Army Aviation). It was closed as a military airbase in 1993 and is in civil use ever since, but is still frequently visited by German Army helicopters. It would make for some nice, shorter helicopter flights between the German Army Aviation bases in the area. https://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/rotenburg-wuemme-airfield.html https://www.relikte.com/rotenburg/index.htm

Looking at the EDDF screenshots, it looks like this is an early 1980s map, with the infamous "Startbahn West" not there yet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runway_18_West

Or a PZL-104 Wilga... Lots of them were used in the GDR by the GST.

Aktuell hat die -L einen Laserentfernungsmesser. Muss wohl zwischenzeitlich nachgerüstet worden sein.

OH-6A by Tobsen and Eightball
Volator replied to tobi's topic in Flyable/Drivable Mods for DCS World
Well, as I said, I don't use triggers, I use ground units to create an NDB. But that doesn't work either with the OH-6, I just checked it. -
OH-6A by Tobsen and Eightball
Volator replied to tobi's topic in Flyable/Drivable Mods for DCS World
Hmm, I've never created beacons with triggers. I just usually take a ground unit, assign a frequency in the KHz range to it in the advanced unit options and put a morse code audio file on it that you can generate on several websites, and the NDB is ready. I've never tried it with the OH-6 though, but for the UH-1 or the Mi-8 that works pretty well. -
T-38A Talon - Community Mod by Veco Simulations

So it's true, the C172 is not a 1st April prank? In that case I'm happy.- 90 replies

+2 Never mind if it's just jammer on/off in DCS, it is sufficient in this sort of simulation. Having a visually authentic GAF 1970s/1980s jammer under my F-4 would be great.
