Kaby Lake / Z270 RAM sweetspot
microvax replied to Django's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You didnt listen to what I said or did not understand it or I did word it ambigious. 1.5 is CPU limited, its CPU limited hard. GPU is basically bored most of the time. As said 1.5 is the exception. Because its terribly outdated in terms of engine, thus it profits from high core clock and memory frequency. 2.1 should not scale that way. And since even todays newsletter basically puts 1.5 at its place as an obsolete piece of tech which is going to go away soon I do not think its reasonable to build a system with specs that are nice on paper but soon are going to be unnecessary or not even really benefitial anymore. For 1.5 its all very much correct, but for any modern engine, including 2.1 it should simply not be that much of a factor anymore and it isn't. Thats why I did link the video, I do not think designing a system for 1.5 is reasonable anymore at this point in time. What really doesnt make any sense is "I assume that 3.6 to 4.2 etc is just not fast enough to overcome the load from scripts and stuff and thus the CPU/system cannot utilize the extra MHz for more fps. YOu might have to be at a level where the base-work DCS has to do is already powered adequately and THEN add more MHz on top that will eventually result in higher fps.". That could be the case if a frame would take longer to render then 7th of a second, which is obviously not the case. Since a frame increase by your model would only be able if simulation + rendering can be done in the cycles added by overclocking. Since obviously more then 6FPS are beeing achieved that doesnt make any sense. As I said, its measurable, just not really perceivable without having a FPS counter on. -

As said 1.5 is plain terrible in terms of efficiently using nowadays hardware. 2.1 is a lot better. But for how FPS increase works I would very much disagree with your interpretation as that makes no sense from a programming and execution standpoint at all. I would suspect the +10% come very much from the roughly +150mhz GPU since GPU clock and FPS scale a lot more linearly since technically there is rarely a reason to be constantly CPU limited. CPU overclock simply resolves the spikes in processing time faster and thus the GPU can render the next frame sooner in these spiky cases. on the topic of being cpu bottlenecked... basically with a 60 euro cpu not a thing until post 1070. Its the same as with pci-e x8 vs x16 for GPUs. One is going to loose like 1-3% for 50% of the lanes. But overall stuff is quite dependant on implementation, but again well programmed games are mainly GPU limited nowadays. One obviously can always get some %s with lower latencies. But basically even with 2133 GPU is still more reasonable to invest in then faster RAM. Unless one has a special use case where faster RAM makes more sense. Its always fun to try to push down render times as far as possible, but for someone just asking what to buy to get out of the box best performance without great tweaking, GPU is the main thing. As said 1.5 atm kinda exception because very old engine, but thats going to change pretty soon with 2.1 where the whole thing is so GPU limited and overall as it seems well optimised. -

Honestly you want as much cache as possible. Nothing beats the transaction lookaside buffer. Basically just nothing. RAM overclocking is great for synthetic loads, for FPS, its measurable, but in the end not really something which is going to give one a FPS boost thats worth the effort and or monies. I did go with my CPU from 3.6 to 4.2 and with ram from 2133 to 2933. The difference is neglectable. That 1.5 even benefits from that stuff is mostly down due to its terrible terrible outdated engine. On 2.1 for example I get 70% util of 12 threads. Also, that a XMP profile is there, doesnt mean it works. I am running 64GB of 3200, but its maximum runs stable at 2933. I do overclock for grid computing and stuff like that. For gaming, well GPU>everything. And even 3.6ghz with 2133 is perfectly capable of feeding the GPU enough for full util in 2.1. EDIT: Fast ram is kinda important for AM4 due to infinity fabric being clocked at the same rate as the RAM. And since data transfer between CCX's is extremely expensive time wise, higher ram clock leads to quite substantially better performance in terms of context switches. -

If you try calculate rapid displacement constantly that probably causes more lag then what one can measure. So basically probably not possible. -

Could it be simply the amount of player aircraft slots causing lag even if they are not taken ? I mean I saw the lag today. Its terrible again. So really no Idea what is actually causing it. Either to many dropped units or to many slots ? I dunno I think nothing else changed right ? -

M9, did you ever hear of a state air superiority in a surprising fashion ? I haven't, killing the bad guys != air superiority. -

Yeah having EWR stations to nuke would be pretty legid. INS guided bombing from 40 000ft FTW. lol -

waw. blue is so scared of el flanker. Its not even real. Honestly what advantage does the F15 not have with the setup without datalink, which is relevant in terms of holding air superiority. If lag is caused by the EWRs, well then so be it, but if it turns out lag is not related to the EWRs, would be nice if it came back. And pls give me a break calling the M2K neutered. It can still photon torpedo any fc3 opponent at will. -

ahahahaha TWB has to be the volunteer each time bahahahahaha You really made me laugh there. RvE is traditionally blue, we literally just went red somewhen back in round 7 or 8 because red was kinda getting butchered and since then basically were red most of the time because when we weren't often stuff was over pretty fast and thats simply not fun. Neither for us nor for the rest. But sure, we can go blue next rotation, lets see how that goes. -

If we allow full weaponry from certain bases just have them linked to $factory at the frontline somewhere, have it depend on a close to frontline storage depot or something like that. That way the side on the defence ist going to get advanced handholding against already extendend hostile fighters. I still think the 120/27E* series range is too long for the tiny distances between objectives though. -

The problem I see with all out war is range. some airports/farps are so close there is no space for the longer ranged weapons imho. SA11 at airports and SA3 at cities is stretching it already imho. And please ET countering aim9x. This is like I dunno. MOAB countering SDB2. Its two different classes of weapons with different strengths on different airframes. Its not matching up at all. Oh god why did I just touch that god damn pandoras box. Again: I am happy with the current situation. Thanks. -

I dunno the AIM54 has no counterpart so I guess its just not going to be a thing and except a few hardcore asymetric balance advocates its not going to generate much buzz. Possibly also the "f14 is designed around aim54" thingy. Which is arguably true but arguably the F14 is fleet defence and we dont really do that here. The aim9x debate is going to be heated because it will probably outclass the r73 and is going to be strong, even if people overhype it, so people are going to say F18 cant have it because so stronk. Then The f18 people are going to counter but the su27 has the r73 which is not that much worse. Then we will have a discussion again that the Su27 is kinda between a rock and a hard place in terms of equipment and its performance and this setup. Then we have the f18 beeing outperformed flight regime, but the su27 not having its peer to peer link, which the f18 is going to have. So there is a lot more explosive mass with that discussion then with the AIM54 one. Gotta bookmark my post so I can pull it out on every occurance of said things in the future and brag how right I was. :megalol: -

How about this: I dont see a problem with fighters. I have never seen a problem with fighters so far. I didnt like the high Mirage density, thats gone now as I hear. That is nice, diversity is nice, more slaugthered FC3 scrubs, also nice. [insert soulless evil Mirage pilot laughter] [And please for the sake of my sanity notice the sarcasm; thanks] 3 lives over 6 hours imho is no spam. That doesnt even remotely qualify for spam. If close in respawns of shot down fighters are considered a problem, up defences, although SAM density is already a lot higher, so dunno, more short range defences would be nice I guess. Pilot Skill matters, discuss more how to do things and how to do them better then what is wrong and why $operation didnt work because $thing is not fair. For me countering stuff is really a key component of the fun. I think Dl for el Flanker and putting the flying Iluminati confirmed death lazor rocket punch Toyota 2000 plug in hybrid pastry launch system on a slight dampener is a nice decision. More is not needed imho. -

TBH the most prominent change I can remember is that we actually got a script which limits the time units stay up. We had non disappearing units first that didnt seem to cause issues. Now that we have them time limited lag is back ? Or its the player slot count, I doubt its the few additional AI units. -

Thanks for the reply, you should get a medal from VKB HQ for heroic action on the ED forums :D. Is Eduard the name of the responsible guy for the EU stuff ? I sent a message to vkb@flightsimcontrols.com describing the noted problems. Haven't got a reply yet, but it was only 2,5 hours ago that I send the message. Will post the pictures I also send with the mail on the VKB forums. Edit:done

I got my package today, gotta say the gimbal is a really nicely engineered piece, the quickrelease system is also a very nice touch. Unfortunately the extension is basically dead on arrival since one of the 3 pins is bent out of the box, also the warthog adapter is missing despite it being listed in the order. This is really a major disappointment together with the delays. I mean its something that happens with every company small things like that slip through QC and missing parts in orders is also normal I just hope that support reacts fast and gets replacement shipments going asap. Will report how it goes.... x) Apart from that great stick, it seems, will report in depth when I can actually use what I ordered. lol.

random SRS moments: Can anyone tell me how to bomb in mirage ? HES ROLLING HES ROLLING. IM SPIKED FLARE FLARE FLARE. Also GCIs which think they are Picard or something continuously calling bra's and ending with "engage". Sometimes its annoying but in general its mostly funny. And I agree most people just pick up stuff so lead by example is the way to improve the whole thing I guess. Also lower voice for extra cool radio calls. -
Good job on making the discussion political despite saying not to do so. The close combat duel is not over its going to be interesting if the f18 dethrones the su27 or not. I expect it not to but it will depend on a lot of factors. so yeah. We will see.

https://youtu.be/-EQqfxiGgd8?t=612 AFAIK the system basically was taken over from the TSR2 project. Later variants got GPS as a additional source of location reference to the system -

I agree that the magic F10 option is kinda meh. But probably removing that would make an entry for not so experienced and actually some half seasoned players kinda hard which is not really something to strive for. -

The memes are stronk with this thread sometimes. A capable M2K pilot can take on a Su27 head on even with ERs and ETs obviously one has to do a lot more then "press trigger button to vaporize flanker" but its still very much doable and if done correctly the Flanker is again pretty much helpless. Although it pretty much only works 1v1. And just that blue looses doesn't mean that red cant have something less outclassed. ;D DL is not going to give the Flanker an edge over the m2k. I cant judge F15 vs su27 but based on missile ranges I doubt the Flanker would have the edge there either, and even if it has, who cares. It would be a minimal edge for el Flanker for once. Anyway Abortedman is probably going to meme this again so yeah. Just here to express my agreement with the statement that the su27 is outclassed. If datalink enabling RWRs can be brought in thats great already. The Idea of ports and convoys bringing small quantities of stronker armament is pretty legid. Overall I really like the way the new setup is shaping up. Amazing work @ciribob [and the rest of the buddyspike team as well ofc !]. I hope you don't get demotivated to much by the muh balance discussion in this thread.
