  1. blame bitcoin. stealing those and other such currency is the only thing funding all this. why for 13 years it really hasn't mattered. now CPU need to be more secure than banks... time locked doors etc... Microsoft needs to add it to game mode.. when game mode is on the cpu runs less secure. because its a gaming PC and not a bank.
  2. I'm a 42 yr old male who started with f19 stealth fighter and needs reading glasses. don't worry about your eyes :) the people on here complaining most about VR have 20/20 vision. poor lambs. all they see are pixels and screen door. the long sighted see a slightly more blurry version of normal DCS. and are more blown away by the spatial awareness.. really its a middle aged mans toy. we don't see the bad graphics because of age related eye degradation. we don't mess up our hair because of male pattern baldness. and skin like shoe leather hides the marks left by rift face :) welcome to the club. ;)
  3. use the engine power indicator to know when you are at cruise power, max continuous and take off power. its on the right. above the battery switches max times are 6 minutes for take off power B on the scale. 60 minutes for max continuous H on the scale unlimited for below K.
  4. i think its a bug in the scripted nature of the event. sometimes it happens sometimes it does not. and it seems to ignore pedal input. it can feel even stranger on really windy days when it does it. try hover taxing about at speeds near translational lift and you will notice it in the pedals. sometimes. anyway it feels totally scripted. almost like you have dragged a skid on the ground and its dragging you round. (to high for that) or its ignoring your right pedal as you increase collective to stop, then loads it on all at once and you yaw right. as you cross ETL. it seems to be in the swap from left to right pedal as you slow the helicopter and then increase collective. i think its yawing left so we press right pedal, get no response and put in more right pedal and then it loads on all at once. anyway luckily it does not happen all that often and its easy to fix when it does it but its hard to diagnose. you need to use the pedals a lot less in the huey than the mi-8 because you have to work the collective less. because the single engine is more responsive so finding the balance is easier. but you have to work the cyclic more (no autopilot) why the huey pilots going the other way find the mi-8 easier and harder to fly :) so try working the collective and pedals less. don't let your mi-8 muscle memory take over :) this is another way to avoid it happening so often.
  5. the TV3 117 engines in the mi 8 are also used in 95% of Russian helicopters. so learn the mi-8 and every other Russian helicopter becomes easy. just got the ka 50 in the sale and its easy to fly after learning the mi-8.. it even has the same engine gauges.. and the start-up is almost identical. so if you want the mi-24 there is no better place to start than the mi-8
  6. put lasers and laser receivers on it and we can use it for online airquake... king of the dogfight. civilian air combat. like paintball.. in VR it would probably be a lot of fun.
  7. i suppose its called a training campaign because it is set in peace time, and it is not a combat campaign. rather than its a campaign designed to teach new people. so its more a collection of tests for those who want to really geek out at the systems and protocols. the test missions you are looking for are usually done by people themselves in the mission editor. simple things for testing specific things. after watching youtube vids. if you think about it, a training campaign in a flight sim is going to be way harder than a combat campaign. because training is made hard, so real fighting is easy. the tests will be hard for veteran flyers. so live die repeat at the combat missions to learn the systems. then take on the training where you only have one life and its way harder :) things are backwards in flight sims.

you have clicked in the huey. congratulations. its the same as learning to ride a bike. once it clicks you wonder what all the fuss was about.
  9. steam is a supermarket.. and supermarkets don't take on the cost of sales. the suppliers do. so if its in the winter sale, its because the supplier wants it in the winter sale. and steam probably gets them to pay extra to get it on the front page of the store.. why you never see dcs on the front page during sales.
  10. if you have the oculus tray tool you can use it to see the oculus overlays in VR. use the performance overlay. to see what performance you are getting in the HMD. this gives you more accurate frame counts as you look about and gives a % of system used.
  11. i think the new licensing model with the harrier is to get round this problem. as its linked to your account and not what drm version you have. it does not have the usual small print about not working with non steam.
  12. its 20% off on steam
  13. well the video, the eye witness account and the official report all line up :) I'm going with ball lightning :)
  14. here is a interview with the pilots from the 2004 incident. typical pilot, "i don't know what it was but i want to fly it.." :) https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/12/16/us/politics/unidentified-flying-object-navy.html
  15. there must be a lot of flies then, for the WSO to also have them on his radar (ASR) :)
  16. so is ED going to add in these beasties as reported by the new York post? seems like something different to chase down in the F/A 18 :) https://nypost.com/2017/12/17/eerie-footage-of-navy-pilots-spotting-unidentified-objects-released/
  17. Fast V sync is designed for VR. the HMD services (vive, oculus) want to handle V sync for the HMD and fast V sync basically stops the card from fighting with them. (by not drawing unwanted pre rendered frames which are thrown away) it makes the card listen instead of second guess. you can get higher average frames using fast sync. but with out the pre rendered frames it may not feel smooth looking around in 2d on a monitor. (try fallout 4, you will get much higher average frames, but it will feel jerky looking about.) you can increase the number of pre rendered frames to make it smoother. but you will lower your average frames per second. and at this point you may as well use adaptive. i have not tried dcs on my monitor with fast sync. maybe it works well with trackir too? who knows. anyway the first rule of IT is, "if it isn't broken then don't fix it" so if you ae happy with smooth play, don't fix it. it may never be smooth again. :)
  18. I'm not disagreeing with anyone, but vehicles always look like toys from airplanes :) everything else feels large enough, especially when you are trying to avoid it in a helicopter :) but yeah, a world slider for those with problems. one thing to try is adjust the HMD so your eye line is looking up at it instead of down at it. its a slight adjustment. i noticed in the cinema i like to look up at the screen and not down at it. and i get a similar thing in the Rift. it will trick the brain into thinking stuff is bigger. maybe its just me.
  19. the progression in combat flight sims is the opposite to real life. only now I'm bored of blowing stuff up am i getting interested in landing properly :)
  20. you can spot a cold solder crack pretty easily, just turn the mobo over and have a look at the connections with a magnifying glass. if you find a crack fill it with metal thermal paste as it will fill the hole and conduct electricity. and it will even handle any heat. just don't get it everywhere.
  21. expansion and contraction due to heat. while its cold you have a lose connection. when its hot and expanded you don't. usually it the ram as others have mentioned. try the cpu next. its something with hundreds of pins that are not quite lining up till hot. so RAM or CPU. most likely. if its a new rig with a big cooler then they can get moved in transit... they get banged around. so take off the cooler and reseat the CPU. and swap all the ram into different slots. and reseat the GPU. when mine used to di it it was the ram and swapping the slots seems to fix it. i don't like these quick release ram slots on my ASUS board. i think they are the problem. only one catch on one side..
  22. the in game vsync works on all cards. why its there. its an old standard. the adaptive vsync is only available to NVidia owners. and it is newer and better :) I'm sure other manufacturers offer something similar.
  23. i would change the V sync from in game to the NVidia control panel. and use adaptive v sync for 2d and fast v sync for VR. the in game V sync is old v sync. and you may get stuttering.
  24. i have finally upgraded to 388.59 from 385.41 and i am not seeing the performance hit i got with 388.13. one thing to try is to use the new fast vsync for VR. so go into NVidia control panel and change global vsync settings to fast. and set the pre rendered frame count to one for the lowest latency. i was using adaptive vsync before. fast seems better in VR. (what its designed for. lower latency) see if that fixes the ghosting. i should really try out 388.13 and see if that was the fix.. but who cares :) its working now.
  25. snake and nape. a mixture of high explosive snakeye and napalm you come in fast and level at 150 ft and drop it ccrp. if they run they burn, if they dive in a hole they get blown up. and as you come in fast and low they don't hear you coming. so don't shoot at you. the only reason you retard a bomb is so you can drop it from low level and still have time to get clear of the blast. they used a lot of snake and nape in Vietnam.. the classic bomb camera footage is all like this. low and fast. a mixture of high explosive and napalm/white phosphorous. but i don't think retarded bombs work particularly well in DCS. and the a10 isn't exactly fast.. so don't bother using snakes use the classic 82. and dumb bomb it from above 500ft. maybe when we get a thunder chief..
